Surfing and art have always gone hand in hand, and Hawaiian South Shore has long enjoyed supporting the creative minds in our community.

On July 29, 2016, we will be hosting a special event featuring the work of Doug Walker, who has been working for years on the Lost & Found Collection.

A lifelong surfer searching for a new creative outlet to restart his stoke, Doug discovered a collection of old surf negatives at the Rose Bowl flea market, and was blown away by the images that he saw when he held them up to the light. For the next three years, he traveled the world with his camera, searching out the photographers and surfers who had worked together to create those images. What began a documentary film project has grown into an entire movement that also includes a book, a brand, and a desire to give back. Beneath it all is a desire to reconnect us with our surfing roots, and to remind us what it means to be “100% human.”

Doug will join the Hawaiian South Shore ohana for a special night of photos, film, stories, and more—and joining him will be surf and photography legends Randy Rarick, Lynne Boyer, Jock Sutherland, Larry Bertlemann, Mark Liddell, Bobby Owens, Becky Benson, Blanche Benson, Reno Abbillera, Denis Pang, Shirley Rogers, John Jones and Betty Depolito. The amount of history that will be present that night, both through the Lost & Found Collection and the celebrated attendees is more than enough reason to come out, but we figure there’s no reason to stop there. The evening will also include a slide show, films by Col Albert Benson, a raffle for a custom-made board by Reno Abillerra, and a hard cover book release. Whether you are a history buff, an aging beach boy waxing nostalgic for the good old days, or a young grom looking for a touch of stoke to break the summertime doldrums, this promises to be an evening to remember.

The Lost and Found Collection – Doug Walker

The man that started it all almost 4 years ago Doug Walker

Big Mahalo To Doug for giving us the opportunity to sponsor the event. July 29th 2016 will be a day to remember.

Roughly eight years ago, commercial film editor Doug Walker found himself experiencing a crossroads; he was craving a return to his beach culture roots. It was around this time when his wife handed him the gift of a video camera with the simple request to go out and create something he loved. The very next day, Walker traveled to Southern California; unbeknownst to him, the trip would change his life forever.

During a random visit to the Rose Bowl Flea Market in Pasadena, Walker was lured toward a stall selling surf memorabilia. There, he discovered three file boxes filled with sheet after sheet of photographic film slides, contact prints, and negatives. He held a single slide toward the sun and could see a clear picture, an image that charted the course for the next chapter of his life. Inside those precious boxes were 30,000 missing photos from Surfing Magazine’s 1970s library. The archive had been lost for years yet serendipitously ended up at his feet on that magical Sunday. He arranged to buy the entire archive and, in that one moment, “The Lost and Found Collection” was born, pulling Doug Walker back to the beach.

Walker’s filmmaking background and this incredible find organically led to a new project – a three-year odyssey between the Hawaiian Islands and Mainland to find the people and narratives associated these images. He recorded tales from the great photographers of the ’70s as well as from the pioneering legends who shaped the counterculture sport of surfing. In 2011, Doug released his documentary film, Lost and Found, showcasing his journey of discovery, the stories behind the photographs, and that amazing era of beach lifestyle and surf.

Reaction to the movie, photo catalog, and the iconic way of life these snapshots captured was nothing short of remarkable; and what Walker thought would be the end of that voyage turned out to be another beginning. Respected photojournalist Matt Wessen was brought aboard to help curate the collection, and longtime friend Bruce Goldberg joined the team as a business partner. The trio envisioned sharing these historic pictures with the world – not only with the surf community at large, but also with everyone who can appreciate the beauty and significance of these film stills and the bygone decade whence they came.

Presently, The Lost and Found Collection is immensely excited to be creating a large format coffee-table book as well as a traveling gallery exhibition in order to give these counterculture photographers a chance to showcase their previously lost artwork. The Lost and Found Collection is continually growing, day by day, and our team is proud to present this archive – a showcase graciously built by working shoulder-to-shoulder with the photographers and surfers toward our dream of giving back to the icons we revere. Viewing the art of these photographers purely in the context of 1970s beach culture is an amazing experience.

It is time to honor and respect our heroes.

Share and enjoy the ALOHA!!
