When and why did you initially get into surfing?

I have always loved the water.  As a child, pools and beaches were my playground. I was involved in all kinds of water sports and it wasn’t until my freshman year of college when I started really getting into surfing.  I played water polo in college at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and it was actually one of my best friends and teammate (Darcy Scott-Hosaka) and her mom that would take me surfing all the time.  Playing water polo made my transition to surfing pretty smooth.  Once I graduated college and finished playing water polo, I was able to surf much more frequently.  I love surfing because it allows me to fulfill my inner competition within myself.  Surfing is something that I will continue to do and love for a lifetime.

Did you have a time period you laid off from surfing?

I did take some time off from surfing when my son Ezra was born.  I actually surfed up until I was about 6 months pregnant.  When my son was born I took a couple months off to recover and I couldn’t wait to get back in the water.  Being a mom, I realized that I was no longer able to surf twice a day, therefore my surfing sessions became so much more valuable.  I was learning the balance of caring for my sweet boy and also having some self-care surfing time.  Surfing has kept me sane and it continues to make me a better mom.

What is your favorite thing about surfing?

If you asked me this question 11 years ago I would say that my favorite thing about surfing is surfing new waves/spots, challenging myself and becoming a better surfer.

Today that is still part of my favorite thing about surfing but I have also loved to watch, share and help my son Ezra progress into a surfer.  To watch him find his passion and love for surfing warms my heart.  To be a part of Ezra’s surfing  experience brings me back to the same feelings I felt when I  fell in love with the sport.  His love and stoke for the ocean is contagious and I feel so blessed to be a part of his surfing journey!

Where is your favorite place to eat after surfing?

I love Red Elephant Thai Cuisine in Kamuki!

What is your favorite item on the menu?

Pa Nang Curry (medium spice, vegan) with rice and Pad Kee Mao is the best! But honestly I could eat almost everything on their menu.

What other hobbies do you have besides surfing?

I enjoy swimming, running and spending time with my son Ezra, my boyfriend Brian, 2 dogs and my kitty cat.

What type of work do you do?

I am a Master Instructor for Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) and the owner of Windward ISR in Kaneohe.  I teach ISR drowning prevention/self-rescue swim lessons to infants and young keiki 6 month to 6+ years old.  My mission is to keep Hawaii’s keiki water safe, educate families on drowning prevention and to share my love for the water/ocean with as many families as possible.

Tell us about the board you recently purchased from us. What model and size is it, and how do you like its performance?

My favorite and most recent board I purchased from Hawaiian South Shore is my 5’10” Lost Sabo Taj.  This is my standard go to shortboard.  It is super versatile.  I can use this for summer south shore, it is awesome for country and it is perfect for surfing my favorite spot, Full Point (Sandy Beach).

My amazing boyfriend Brian also bought me a 5’5” Lost Puddle Fish.  This board has been a staple during the summer time.  It is loose, fun and fast.  It is awesome at generating a lot of speed on slower waves.  I love surfing the south shore with this board especially when the waves are a little mushier or sloppy.

Whenever I’m close by, I pop into Hawaiian South Shore.  Brian and I love talking story with Brett.  He has been so great with showing us all the newest board models and fins.  I try my best to not buy every board in their shop LOL. Honestly their boards and staff are the best!

Do you have any additional comments?

Mahalo for this opportunity Hawaiian South Shore!  We love you guys and love to share our stoke with you.  Your boards are the best and Brett especially has been such a great friend and he is always so kind and helpful!
