JS’s Ultimate Groveler the “Flaming Pony” Available in HYFI Construction
Jason Stevenson (JS) is known for making cutting-edge, high-performance boards that the world’s best surfers use to dismantle the world’s best waves. But what about when an average surfer is stuck surfing average to poor waves at home? Fortunately, JS has an answer to that as well—it’s called the Flaming Pony.
The Flaming Pony is JS’s “most user-friendly groveler of all time.” The board builds on the history of the Flying Pony, which itself was a descendant of the Pier and Show Pony models. The board has a fuller nose and redistributes the volume to provide more foam under the chest. This increases paddle speed, which is further amplified by pulling in the tail further to facilitate maneuvers The board has continuous rocker throughout, and features a standard single concave up front. This gives way to double concave under the back foot ,giving the board both control and shredability.
The Flaming Pony comes with five fin boxes, so it can be ridden either as a quad or a thruster. It is JS’s latest dedicated groveler, and built to help you maintain performance even in the most terrible of waves. Stock sizes range from 4'11" (and around 21 liters) to 6'0" (at around 43.5 liters), so the board is meant to ridden quite a bit shorter than your normal shortboard, but two inches longer than past JS Pony models. And the Flaming Pony is available in HYFI construction, which means that now the ultimate groveler can be made from the most progressive materials in surfing.
WHAT IS HYFI?
Jason Stevenson and his JS label (famous for the tractor logo) have been producing some of the most high-performance surfboards on the planet for more than two decades. No one questions the design elements of these boards, and a number of guys on the world tour ride them, including Julian Wilson, Owen Wright, Adrian “Ace” Buchan and Joel Parkinson. But what many people don’t realize is that the technology that goes into the construction of the boards is just as cutting edge as their design.
JS offers their range of boards in the HYFI construction, which is a hybrid fiber technology. The product of two years of research and development, HYFI is the latest and greatest in surfboard construction advances, producing light, strong, fast surfboards that are more durable than polyurethane boards, but ride just as well. The flex out of the tail adds more drive and projection, the boards are 20% lighter than PU boards (making them faster and more maneuverable), and they simply don’t ding as easily as normal glassed PU boards. The result is the ultimate strength-to-weight ratio, applied to some of the best designs in the surfboard industry. In other words, the perfect board.
JS offers a number of popular models in the HYFI construction, including the Monsta 6, the Air 17, the Monsta Box, the Blak Box II, the Ghetto Cat, the Psycho Nitro and the Flying Pony. Here at Hawaiian South Shore, we are excited to carry a number of JS’s HYFI boards. Come check them out—I’ve already added one to my personal quiver!
