HARLEY INGLEBY "HI4"
Harley Ingleby’s collaborations with Thunderbolt Technology have produced some of the most high-tech longboards on the market, and the latest iteration of the HIHP, known as the HI4, is no exception. Based on Harley’s competition board (which has won him two world titles), the HI4 is a high-performance longboard with a wider nose and a wide point set slightly back of center, which allows for traditional noseriding without sacrificing maneuverability.
The board is available in two lengths—9'1" and 9'3"—and comes with a 4+1 fin setup, which means that it can be ridden as a quad, a single fin, or a 2+1.
The HI4 is also available in two different construction options, the Thunderbolt Black (carbon fiber laminate) and Thunderbolt Red (which still has carbon fiber stringers used in the layup, but is laminated with fiberglass).
This surfboard thrives in anything from waist-high to overhead surf and is just as forgiving for beginners as it is rippable for pros. Refined by Harley over the past 10 years as he has tested and ridden this surfboard to competitive success, the HI4 is a proven shape that can help any longboarder elevate their surfing to the next level.
Harley Ingleby on the HI4
The HI4 is the latest iteration and is available in the space-age Thunderbolt Technology that we are such big fans of here at Hawaiian South Shore. The board comes in both Thunderbolt Black (which has a carbon fiber laminate) and Thunderbolt Red (which still has internal carbon layups, but has a fiberglass/epoxy laminate).
This is a great surfboard for all-around ripping in everyday conditions and is appropriate for anyone from beginners up to pros. The wide point has been moved back a bit compared to the HIHP, making the board hold better in the face during noserides, and also allowing for faster turns off the tail.
The HI4 is a great board for anything between waist-high to well overhead surf and can be ridden as either a quad, single fin, or 2+1, due to the 4+1 fin box setup. Harley prefers it as a single fin when he plans to do more traditional, nose-focused surfing, whereas the quad provides more speed and drive through flat sections and out of the pocket onto the face, allowing for more radical surfing.
As Harley’s go-to comp board, the HIHP (and all the latest iterations, such as the HI4) has supported him through major competitive successes, including two world champions. If it’s good enough for him, it’s good enough for us—and we think you will like it too!
