Tell us your surf story - from your first wave to where you are now.
"First time I ever surfed was actually on one of Kelly Slater's boards. My aunt taught him in school growing up in Cocoa Beach, Florida. She had borrowed one of his longboards from his parents. I almost drowned because I got walled—it was brutal. Fast forward to when I turned 26, and I got sucked back into it after an Oregon coast trip. Froze my ass off. Then I fell in love with surfing when I moved to Santa Barbara and frequented Rincon and C Street. I started shaping and glassing too. After that, I moved to Hawaii and kept the ocean dream alive!"
What keeps you coming back to the ocean?
"The peace and connection I feel with the water. I feel like when I go surf, it's my way of checking in with my own karma or pono. If I'm in the right spots and catching set waves, it tells me my inner world is aligned."
How has your surfing evolved over time?
"I first fell in love with the twin fin fish shape because of the playfulness, more flow with the wave, less slashing and more turning with the wave. Then one day I was forced to go logging after forgetting my board at C Street in Ventura. Immediately I felt like the world was in slow motion on a log and just stayed with it. Being on the nose and doing huge bottom turns was what scratched the itch. I still have a few fishes I ride as well. Lately I picked up the foil and hate to say it but the moment you get sick of crowds go get a foil, punish yourself to learn to ride it, and you will not be sorry. The perfect tool for infinite waves longer than you've ever ridden on a surfboard."
Tell us about your current favorite board and fin setup.
"The 9 ft high performance log GX1000 with a 9 inch pinned out single fin. Fast, playful, snappy. It literally allowed me to enjoy going left haha!"
What's your favorite post-surf routine?
"Post surf I'll be crushing a protein shake and bunch of water. The Farm Stand in Haleiwa slaps after getting burned by groms all morning!"
What first brought you to Hawaiian South Shore, and what keeps you coming back?
"Came in for slips, came back for a fin screw, left with a $2000 board—funny how that happens. I keep going back for wax and the vibes. The staff is super cool and not salesy. They just want to help you tap into the surfing passion. You decide if you're breaking out the wallet. Chill dudes for sure."
Do you have any memorable experiences with us you'd like to share?
"Probably the fact that the staff kept saying, 'come back whenever if you're ready to buy the log'. I wasn't halfway to my car before I turned around and pulled the trigger. First brand new board I ever bought from a shop. Zero buyer's remorse."
When you're not in the water, what keeps you busy?
"I'm a realtor and I'm developing software for realtors too. That keeps me pretty busy. Usually an Ala Moana beach workout or Kokohead hike keep me sane when it's flat. Oh, and the foiling. Seriously everyone should foil. Everyone will catch more waves!"

🏄 From Pantyhose to Performance: The Evolution of Rash Guards

The humble rash guard has come a long way since surfers first improvised with pantyhose material in the 1970s. Originally created to prevent chafing during long sessions, these functional garments have evolved from basic lycra shirts into sophisticated pieces of technical apparel. Early versions were simply designed to create a barrier between skin and surfboard, but today's rash guards incorporate advanced fabrics, thoughtful construction, and UV protection that make them essential for any water enthusiast.
Hawaiian South Shore's innovative Wet Rash guard represents the next leap in this evolution. Combining a 1.5mm wetsuit front panel with traditional rash guard material, it offers core warmth without sacrificing flexibility. What truly sets our design apart is the meticulous attention to comfort details—strategic seam placement that moves irritation points away from the armpit, an extended gasket to prevent chafing, and a back zipper that runs past the midpoint for easy on-off. We've even added practical features like a hat attachment clip, secure pocket, and thoughtful thumbholes that prevent water cupping while paddling.
Whether you're a daily surfer, swim instructor, or casual ocean enthusiast, the durability speaks for itself—pool swimmers report a full year of tri-weekly use before replacement. Available in multiple sizes (from small for 135lb/5'9" frames to XXL for 209lb/5'11" builds) and with a hooded option created specifically at surf instructors' request, these garments deliver premium performance with thoughtful innovations. Experience the difference proper design makes—available now with free shipping to any US address.

Balance Training: The Hidden Key to Surfing Excellence (Part 1 of 2)

While nothing replaces time in the water, targeted balance training can be the difference between plateauing and breaking through to the next level of your surfing. After consulting with professional surf trainers, I discovered that stability exercises don't just help with bigger waves—they transform your entire approach to riding.
Training with stability balls, Indo boards, and even simple single-leg movements trains your body to make faster, more precise adjustments crucial for quick turns and maintaining control in critical sections. However, experts caution that building foundational strength in your hips, knees, ankles, and core must come first—otherwise, aggressive balance exercises could actually increase injury risk both on land and in the water.

Before diving into advanced balance tools like Indo boards or BOSU trainers, experts caution that building foundational strength is essential. Starting with basic exercises like single-leg stands allows you to develop the hip, knee, ankle, and core stability needed to prevent injury both during training and while surfing.
This approach highlights the importance of proprioception – your body's awareness of its position in space – which will be the focus of next month's follow-up article. Proprioception is what allows you to make micro-adjustments without conscious thought, a critical skill whether you're navigating a steep drop or adjusting to changing wave conditions.
Ready to elevate your wave game between sessions? Start with just 10 minutes of balance work 3 times weekly and feel the difference on your very next surf. Stay tuned for our May newsletter.
