Mason Ho is one of the most entertaining people in surfing, so when he releases media of any sort, we tend to tune in. He is also one of the most creative surfers in terms of the equipment that he uses, so when he drops a video talking about his boards and fins, we really sit up and take notice.  Shallow Reef Fins A few months back, Mason collaborated with FCS on a video talking about what he has been riding and working on. The first thing he went into was his fins for shallow reefs (which Mason is notorious...

The Eddie Swell That Didn’t Go

A week ago, it looked like we were about to have our second Eddie in two years this week—something that hasn’t happened in over 20 years. A massive storm was forecasted to form northwest of Hawaii, and all the buzz in the big wave world was that the Eddie was going to run on Friday. They even put the event on yellow alert, letting all of the competitors know that they needed to be ready to fly to Hawaii if the forecasted continued to shape up. @theeddieaikau Unfortunately, that didn’t quite happen—at least not in the way that we’d hoped...

The History of Valentine’s Day—and Four Gifts for the Discerning Lover

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and many of us are looking forward to spending time with our significant others. But although most of us celebrate Valentine’s Day, we might not all be aware of how it started. Valentine’s Day is the holiday of Saint Valentine, but the Catholic Church actually acknowledges the existence of three Saint Valentines, all of whom were martyrs. The most commonly held legend connecting a Saint Valentine to romance is that Emperor Claudius II outlawed marriage for young men in order to encourage them to be better, more focused soldiers, but a man named...

ROBERT FLANDERS Hawaiian South Shore Member of the Month  When and why did you initially get into surfing? I started surfing in 2010 after moving to Florida. Growing up in Michigan, I skated half pipes and parks and when snowboarding was allowed at ski areas, I jumped on with both feet (hahaha). So being next to ocean I couldn’t wait to start surfing. The beach I most frequented was Ponce Inlet and absolutely fell in love surfing and being in the ocean. Did you have a time period you laid off from surfing? If so, when and why did you...

He describes the board as having a fast takeoff and gliding well, but admits that it doesn't have the same hold and snap on the top as his previous board. Jacob is still trying to figure out the board's performance and may consider...

Hawaiian South Shore "Hatchet" Fin Review by Milanster

REVIEW: Hawaiian South Shore Hatchet Fin Our surfer friend loves the Hatchet Fin, noting its ability to turn on a dime and nose ride when needed. She typically surfs at Marine Land, Straight Out, and Rock piles, using a 9'4" board. She previously used the Miss Lucy fin, which was great for nose riding but harder to turn, especially given their small size. She notes a big difference between the Miss Lucy and the Hatchet Fin, with the latter being much easier to turn. she is 5'2" and weighs around 120 pounds, and has the Hatchet Fin all the way in the back....
