The Critical Slide Society - More of a movement than a brand...

It was around seven years ago, on a surf trip to the Coffs Harbour region of Australia’s NSW, that I first started noticing TCSS logos. And no wonder. At the time, The Critical Slide Society was a fledgling enterprise started by two local boys, Jim Mitchell and Sam Coombes. In fact, it was more of a movement than a brand. TCSS started as a blog, and slowly grew into a community. But then things started to gain momentum, and suddenly, less than a decade later, TCSS is a multi-million dollar surf brand. The irony, of course, is that TCSS is...

Channel Islands Soft Top Surfboard? Performance? WHAT???

While soft-top boards were all but written off 10 years ago, these days it seems like everyone has one. From total beginners to pros who rip the snot out of them and paddle them into double-overhead Pipe, foamie surfboards are everywhere. Jamie O’Brien has pretty much built a career around surfing critical barrels on soft-tops, and pulling stunts like mid-barrel transfers from foamies to normal boards. Kalani Robb has seen his career revived after signing with a soft-top brand, and Koa and Alex Smith are notorious for breaking and returning so many soft-tops to Costco that they forced the retail...

Surfing in Iceland: Staying Warm When the Water’s Cold

I’m on a surf trip in Iceland at the moment—that’s 66 degrees north, just a hair shy of the arctic circle. In other words, it’s cold. At the moment, the water is around 48 degrees, the air is a bit less, and the wind is ripping at a solid 40 knots. But it’s ripping offshore, which means that I’m doing multiple sessions per day. After all, the wind could turn tomorrow and it could be onshore for weeks—gotta get it while it’s good! Having grown up in Hawaii and spent 15 years on an island in the south Pacific,...

The Devil is in the Details... Banks Journal 100% Organic Cotton Tees

We won't bore you with our biased opinion of why we love our tees so much, hell, we designed ‘em, we had better like them, right? But it’s what we can’t show you on screen that you should be paying attention to.  All the cotton we use throughout our range of tee shirts is 100% Organic. “Ah yeah, cool man. Pretty cliché though. What isn’t organic these days?” Actually, it’s not as common as you may think, and the global benefits are pretty amazing. You see, conventional cotton accounts for about a quarter of the world’s insecticide usage, 10% of pesticides and it’s...

Kanoa Dahlin - Tired of Underperformance, Surfing Legend Throws Away Fins to Develop His Own

Globetrotting surf legend Kanoa Dahlin had only one problem – his fins weren’t giving him the drive he knew that he was capable of. A North Shore native, Kanoa entered the pro surfing arena at just 21 years old. Although he has shredded the waters of over half the earth, he could not find a fin that fit both the riding condition and his style. So with the help of a few of his pro surfer friends, he took over the fin design scene himself. “I’ve been really lucky to have all my peers surf my fins because it helped...

Swells 102: Ground Swell Versus Windswell

As we learned in Swells 101, waves are created by the action of wind across the surface of water. Once created, these waves travel through the water until they eventually decay and dissipate. But while they travel through the water, something interesting happens. Because raw, recently created waves are chaotic and disorganized, they tend to move at different speeds and in slightly different directions. Over long distances and long periods of time, the faster-moving waves catch up with the slower-moving waves, and these waves join together. After many hundreds and even thousands of miles of travel, these waves tend to...

Who is Point Panic Contest Director?

1. Talk about who you are. I grew up in Mililani during the 1980s when it was still a relatively small town compared to today. After high school, I moved to the Big Island and attended the University of Hawaii at Hilo while my family moved to the island of Molokai. I lived on Molokai off and on for ten years building my father’s house on Hawaiian homestead land, and I worked as an electrician with him all over Maui County. In 2008, I returned to Oahu to pursue a master’s degree at Hawaii Pacific University and have lived here on the island...

Big Wave Contest..Ask 100 big wave surfers if they’d rather

Looking Ahead to the Big Wave Awards Ask 100 big wave surfers if they’d rather win the Big Wave World Championship or the Big Wave Ride of the Year award, and you’ll get a pretty even split between the two. While a world championship puts you in the history books, Ride of the Year honors go to the single best big wave ridden all season—and for most people, that one wave will probably qualify as the best ride of their life. Every April, the WSL Big Wave Awards celebrate the best in heavy water heroics, bringing together the hardest charging...

"step up or step aside" - Kelly Slater

John John Dominates Margaret River With Historic Performance The Rip Curl Bells Beach starts today, but the world (and the world tour) is still in shock from John John Florence’s performance last week at Margaret River. Main Break is notorious for being one of the most difficult waves in the world to surf well, and that point was proved time and again last week as the world’s best looked to be surfing…well, not quite at their best. The wonky, fat walls of Main Break simply don’t lend themselves to exciting, high-performance surfing, and more often than not leave competitors looking...

Drug Aware Margaret River Pro - Going Small to Go Bi

Drug Aware Margaret River Pro Going Small to Go Big The Drug Aware Margaret River Pro is on this week over in West Australia, the second stop on the WSL world tour. And to be honest, the main venue at Margaret River Main Break is not the most exciting wave in the world to surf or watch. The backup venues of North Point and The Box are exciting—North Point is the ultimate barrel to boost setup, and The Box is one of the original slabs—but we usually don’t get more than a day of competition at the backups, which is...
