Answers from HSS in Honolulu on surfboard bags, day covers and traveling with boards.
Does HSS have a big selection of surfboard travel bags?
Yes. HSS has a large selection of surfboard travel bags, including FCS, VEIA, Creatures of Leisure and HSS bags, in single-board, multi-board, wheeled and day-cover styles. Browse Surfboard Bags Hawaii (29 products) and Shortboard Travel Bag.
What size board bag do I need?
Match the bag to your board length. If your board is between sizes, go up. Sizes listed in the title, e.g. "FCS Day X 10mm Travel Bag Shortboard (6'0, 6'3)" or "FCS Day X 10mm Travel Bag Midlength(7'6, 8'0)". Not sure? Bring your board to the shop and HSS will fit it.
What is the best travel bag for one shortboard?
A padded single-board bag, such as "FCS Day X 10mm Travel Bag Shortboard (6'0, 6'3)" (10 mm foam, waterproof 600D ripstop shell, nose and tail plates, wetsuit stash pocket) or the lighter "FCS Day Runner 7mm Travel Bag Shortboard (5'6, 5'9, 6'0)". What is a surfboard day bag or sock, and do I need one?
A day bag or knit sock protects the board in the car and on the beach (light padding or stretch knit). Examples: "VEIA Explorer Mid Length Day Bag (7'6 - 8'6) Squadron", "HawaiianSouthShore SHORTBOARD Knit Surfboard Sock Stretch Mesh | Fits up to 6'6" Hybrid". Use a padded travel bag for flying.

Can I fly with a surfboard bag on Alaska or Hawaiian Airlines?
The HSS product pages say Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines treat surfboards as standard checked baggage with no special item fee; one bag can hold more than one board up to 10 ft 5 in and 50 lb (a shorter limit applies on E175 regional aircraft). Rules change, so check the airline before you fly.
How do I pack a board bag safely?
Use a sturdy bag sized to your board, don't overstuff it, and don't use a longboard bag for shortboards. Check airline weight and linear-size limits ahead of time.
Does HSS sell rack pads and repair gear for trips?
Yes: "FCS Rack Pads - Protect Your Boards on Any Roof Rack", "Veia Explorer Round Rack Pad Night", and Solarez kits such as "Solarez Epoxy Pro Travel Kit - Strong UV Cure Resin Set".
