FIREWIRE MACY-BOO

A true noseriding log, inspired by Donald Takayama's Model T and Skip Frye's gliders. Built to trim, glide, and hold a long nose ride.
How It Surfs
  • Nose concave creates lift, so the board holds when you step all the way forward
  • Flipped tail rocker sets the tail into the wave to anchor long nose rides
  • Rolled belly through the middle keeps the rails forgiving and easy to trim
  • Vee through the tail lets you pivot and reset your line
Helium Build
  • EPS core and flex stringer feel light and lively
  • Paulownia and balsa wood rails control the flex
  • Wooden nosecap gives a firm platform right where you stand to noseride
Rob Machado's first longboard, designed with his daughter Macy.

MACY BOO

The Firewire Macy-Boo is Rob Machado's take on a traditional log — a classic noseriding outline drawn from the boards he keeps in his own quiver, built to trim, glide, and hold a nose ride the way a proper log should. It's an unhurried board for surfers who measure a good wave by how long they can stay in the pocket, not by how many turns they fit in.

WHO

The Macy-Boo is for the surfer who rides a longboard the traditional way — forward, on the nose, and in trim.

  • The noserider who wants a dedicated log rather than a longboard that compromises between styles
  • The longboarder stepping across from a performance shape who wants real traditional feel underfoot
  • The stylist who'd rather cross-step and hang five than drive a turn off the tail
  • The experienced surfer building a log into an existing quiver for clean, unhurried days
  • The rider who wants a classic log shape in a lighter, livelier build than a heavily glassed traditional board

This is a board that rewards patience, footwork, and reading the wave ahead of you.

WHEN

The Macy-Boo is built for the waves logs were made for — clean, peeling lines with an open face and enough shape to hold a long trim. It comes into its own on softer, gentler waves where the goal is to get forward early and stay there, and it keeps working as the surf picks up into shoulder-high and overhead territory where the wall has real push behind it. Nose lift and a flipped tail rocker mean it sets into the wave face and stays locked in rather than running out ahead of the pocket. Hawaii turns on days like this often enough that a dedicated log earns a permanent spot on the rack, not just a place in the rotation.

WHAT

Rob Machado built the Macy-Boo around the boards that shaped his own longboarding — Donald Takayama's Model T and Skip Frye's gliders — and the bottom contours tell that story from nose to tail. A single concave runs under the nose, creating lift and a defined pocket up front so the board holds its position on the wave face when you step all the way forward. Through the middle, that concave rolls into a belly, which softens the way the rails engage and makes the board feel forgiving and easy to trim rather than sharp or demanding. Off the back, the belly transitions into vee, which breaks up the flat and gives the tail somewhere to go when you want to pivot and reset your line. The flipped tail rocker ties it together: lifting the tail rocker lets the back of the board sit down into the wave under your weight, which is what anchors a long nose ride.

DIMENSIONS

CONSTRUCTION OPTIONS

Helium: An EPS core built around a variable flex I-beam stringer, with Paulownia and balsa wood rails running the full length of the board and a wooden nosecap at the tip. Light and lively, with flex controlled by the wood rails and a firm, durable platform at the nose.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is the Macy-Boo a true log or a performance longboard?

It's a true log. The difference comes down to design intent: a performance longboard is built with modern rocker, harder rails, and a fin setup that lets you turn hard off the tail, while a log is built to trim and noseride for as long as the wave allows. The Macy-Boo sits firmly in the second category — nose concave for lift, rolled belly rails that stay soft and forgiving, flipped tail rocker to anchor the board while you're standing forward, and a single fin for the hold a nose ride depends on. It isn't trying to be a board you slash off the tail. It's a board you walk.

What size fin should I ride?

Firewire designed the Macy-Boo around a 10-inch fin, and that's the right starting point for most riders on either size. Our general guidance for single-fin logs is 8.5 to 10 inches on a 9'0", and 9 to 11 inches at 9'6" and above. Within that range, longer fins give you more hold and a more stable platform on the nose, while shorter fins loosen the tail and make the board easier to turn. Heavier and stronger surfers can drive a bigger fin comfortably; lighter surfers often prefer to come down slightly to keep the board from feeling locked in. If you plan to spend most of your time on the nose, go longer.

When you contact us, include your current board dimensions and volume, the construction you're considering, the type of waves you surf most (beach break, reef break, point break), how often you surf, and your location. Location affects shipping options and helps us give you accurate delivery information.

Can a beginner ride the Macy-Boo?

It's on the friendlier end of the traditional log category — the volume, the width, and the soft rolled rails make it stable, easy to paddle, and forgiving when you're learning to move your feet. That said, a single-fin log is a harder board to turn and control than a longboard with modern rocker and a multi-fin setup, especially once the waves get steeper or hollower. If your goal is to learn traditional longboarding properly and you're surfing clean, gentle waves, it's a very good board to learn on. If you need a board that will forgive late drops and let you dig out of trouble, talk to us first.

Should I order the 9'3" or the 9'6"?

The right length comes down to your weight, how you want to surf the board, and what kind of waves you'll ride it in most. As a starting point, we generally put riders in the 100 to 150 lb range on shorter longboards, and point heavier or more powerful surfers toward 9'6" and up. The extra length and width on the 9'6" gives you more paddle, more stability underfoot, and a more forgiving platform for cross-stepping; the 9'3" is a little easier to move around and turn. The full picture matters, so get in touch and we'll dial it in with you:

When you reach out, include your height, weight, fitness level, experience level, the boards you're riding now, the types of waves you surf most, and how you want to ride this one — pure noseriding or a mix of trim and turns. If you're ordering from off-island, let us know your location so we can give you accurate shipping and delivery information.
