MILO DESCRIPTION

WHAT IS THE MILO SURFBOARD?

Inspiration Behind the Milo

The Milo isn't just another surfboard; it's a piece of CJ Nelson's surfing history and passion. Named after one of his favorite records by The Descendants, the Milo brings back the nostalgic feel of surfing with a board that's all about fun and versatility. Originally inspired by his father's Dugout fish, CJ designed the Milo to recreate the joy of surfing with a board that felt like borrowing an older brother's magic stick.

Design and Features

  • Versatile Shape: The Milo combines the outline of a performance fish with the ethos of a classic MR Fish, making it perfect for both fun and performance-oriented surfing.
  • Twin with a Trailer Setup: This unique fin setup offers more options for handling and stability, making the Milo adaptable to various wave conditions.
  • Flat Deck with Full Rails: The board's design features a flat deck that extends the thickness to the rails, allowing for better wave catching and stability.
  • Tail Design: The Milo sports a swallow tail with a slight V off the tail, enhancing grip and maneuverability when taking off down the line.

Construction Details

  • Medium Weight Build: Unlike lighter modern boards, the Milo opts for a medium build, reminiscent of the durable boards from the 70s but with enough modernity to keep it responsive.
  • Thunderbolt Technology: The board uses Thunderbolt technology, ensuring that each board is consistent in weight and performance, just like the ones CJ rides himself.

Why the Fat Rails?

Those thick rails under the chest area might look intimidating, but CJ designed them to help the board paddle and catch waves easily. The thinned out swallow tail still provides excellent grip and control when driving off the bottom.

With its generous planing surface and width, the Milo is an excellent stepping stone for longboarders wanting to try a smaller board. But skilled shortboarders can also enjoy laying it on rail and opening it up thanks to the tail's down-turned edges. It's a versatile design that caters to multiple skill levels.

Not Too Light, Not Too Heavy

CJ intentionally gave the Milo a medium-weight glass-on feel, heavier than typical epoxy/EPS constructions. This connects it to the feeling of classic '70s fish shapes while avoiding any quirkiness associated with ultralight boards.

While reminiscent of an old twin-fin fish, the Milo isn't a true keel fish design. Its outline and rocker are more akin to a refined, high-performance fish shape. CJ rides it with Neal Purchase Jr's Flying Diamond twin + trailer set for versatile drive and pivoty turns.

CJ NELSON'S MILO FAQS

1. What’s the bottom contour like, and how does it affect speed?

The Milo features a single-to-double concave bottom paired with a flat rocker. This design channels water efficiently through the fins, reducing drag and generating lift. The result is a fast, drivey feel on open-faced waves.

2. How does the rocker affect paddling and takeoff?

The Milo’s flat rocker and generous planing surface help it catch waves early and maintain speed through flatter sections. However, positioning is key—get your weight right and the board glides effortlessly.

3. What’s up with the thick rails—how do they ride?

The Milo has a flat deck with full rails, especially under the chest area. These rails increase stability and paddle power. Toward the tail, they thin out, allowing for responsive turns and better control off the bottom.

4. Is the Milo only good for small waves?

Not at all. The Milo performs well in a wide range of conditions—from knee-high to overhead surf. While it handles smaller surf with ease, it really shines in clean, steeper waves where its speed and turning ability come alive.

5. How heavy is the Milo? What’s the construction like?

The Milo comes in Thunderbolt Red construction by default—this gives it a medium-weight feel that blends durability with responsive flex. It’s heavier than most EPS boards but lighter than traditional PU, echoing classic '70s fish designs.

6. What fin setup works best for the Milo?

CJ recommends the (NPJ) APEX Twin + Trailer setup. The twin gives drive and flow, while the small trailer fin adds control and pivot—perfect for the Milo’s hybrid design.
