BOSS UP

The Firewire Boss Up is Kelly Slater's first performance mid-length — a Slater Designs shape built by Dan Mann that carries shortboard DNA into a longer, higher-volume package. It's the board that paddles into anything, rides like a performance shape, and handles a wider range of conditions than anything else in its class.

WHO

The Boss Up was built for surfers who are done compromising — and want one board that can do it all.

WHEN

The Boss Up's wave range is one of the widest in the Firewire lineup. Its medium entry and exit rocker with a double concave bottom gives it the paddle speed to lock into weak, slow waves early, while the longer rail line and round tail provide enough drive and hold to handle punchy, overhead surf. In Hawaii, it reads the full range of conditions the ocean offers — from small, mushy days when a shortboard would struggle to get going, to solid overhead sets where a mid-length usually falls apart. This is the board you reach for when you're not sure what the ocean is going to deliver.

WHAT

The Boss Up takes the S Boss outline and stretches it — same blunt nose, same FRK-inspired tail, but with bigger overall dimensions and a longer rail line that adds drive, paddle power, and range. The parallel rail outline keeps the board wide through the middle for maximum planing speed, while the pulled-in round tail keeps the back end responsive and pivot-friendly. A subtle single-to-double concave bottom feeds speed through flat sections and encourages flow from rail to rail. The result is a mid-length shape that doesn't feel sluggish or heavy — it surfs with the directness of a performance shortboard in a package that does a lot more work for you.

The volume recommendation of roughly 13 liters above your standard shortboard isn't arbitrary — it's what makes this board so effective. Extra volume here means early entry, strong paddle speed, and the ability to catch waves that a shortboard would miss entirely. But the Boss Up's design doesn't let that volume sit dead in the board — it's distributed through a shape that was engineered to put you in the right position to surf, not just float.

It was good. I wish it was bigger out there, but I'm definitely considering buying it for my town over in San Diego. I went out to Canoes in the morning and at night. It was nice. It kept up with the logs with the twin-plus-one fins. It's pretty loose and fast. I didn't catch a good wave, but I could tell if I did, it would be sick. I'm 5'6" and 160 pounds. The volume was good. It was easy to paddle. I'm thinking about getting it again

I’m 5'9", 155 lbs, and I’ve been riding the 6'6" Boss Up. I started with the 2+1 setup, but switched to quads for more speed and release in smaller town waves. The board felt way faster and more responsive off the back foot—especially with smaller quad fins. It pivots great and still holds tight in bigger surf like Diamond Head and even Mansions. I like a rail-driven style, and this board fits that perfectly. Super stoked on it.

After I demoed both the 7’2 and 7’6 Boss Up from HSS, I decided to get the 7’2 in Volcanic tech. The board paddles super good and catches waves very easily. I love riding this board when town gets around head high and lets you glide into the bigger sets better than any of my other boards. Been riding it as a quad and so far settled in on the Craig Andersen large front fins and the Hayden Shapes quad rear fins. While I’d likely ride something else when the waves are smaller, it’s nice that this board is up to the task and can handle a wide range of conditions. Big mahalo to Dave and the HSS crew for the excellent customer service and for ordering this board for me.

Hey, my name is Brandon. I'm based here in Manoa and I work for UH. I tried out Slater's new Boss Up model 7'6". I was most impressed with how quickly it can turn, almost on a dime. It's super lively and incredibly responsive. The down-the-line speed blew my mind - you can make sections that, as a 45-year-old, I wasn't making before. We surfed it at Diamond Head and Old Man's. It had great paddle power and it's so light. At Diamond Head, it was about chin to head high, maybe 3 to 4 feet plus. It was windy and choppy, which really tested the board's paddle power, and it held up well. You can catch almost anything on it. I used the Endor Fins with a 2+1 setup, with something small in the back for more speed. You can really whip this board around and maneuver it in unusual ways. I was shocked that I could catch waves at Old Man's where the sets were about 3 feet and thick. I'm 5'11" and weigh just under 180, about 177 pounds.
