Rob Machado's Xtra Cado Lands at Hawaiian South Shore
Rob Machado's mid-length Xtra Cado just hit the floor in stock, and two more Firewire boards are on their way. Here's what's new this week, and who each one is actually for.
A guy walked in last week holding his phone up, paused on a video of Rob Machado gliding across a knee-high day at Seaside Reef. He wasn't asking about a shortboard. He wanted to know how a board could look that relaxed and still turn like that. That board is the Xtra Cado, and it just landed on our floor in stock.

Firewire Xtra Cado — In Stock Now
The Xtra Cado is Rob Machado's follow-up to his own best-selling Machadocado, built for the days when you want to catch everything and still have a board that turns when you ask it to. It sits between a shortboard and a longboard on purpose. The flat rocker gets you into waves early, even when the surf is mushy, and the domed deck keeps the volume centered instead of spread out toward the rails, so it doesn't feel bulky under your feet.
The tail is a squash, foiled thin at the rail edge for drive, and the five-fin box means you can run it as a quad, twin, or thruster depending on the day. Rob rides his own 6'8" as a quad. That's his starting point, not a rule — our team can help you dial in a setup that matches how you actually surf.

Firewire Boss Up — Kelly Slater's First Mid-Length
Kelly Slater's first performance mid-length, shaped by Dan Mann to carry shortboard DNA into a longer, higher-volume board. It's got about 13 liters more volume than a typical shortboard, which means you catch waves earlier and paddle into stuff you'd otherwise watch go by. The parallel outline holds width for speed, and the pulled-in round tail keeps it responsive instead of floaty. Most of Firewire's own team surfs it as a quad.
Most sizes are already back on our floor. One size — the 6'6" in the Volcanic Lam build — is open for preorder, arriving 8/21.
Best For: Shortboarders who want to catch more waves on an average day without switching to a longboard
Firewire Mindcraft — Open for Preorder, Arriving 8/21
This is the first Tomo x Kelly Slater collaboration in years, and it's built to let you ride 2 to 4 inches shorter than your usual shortboard without losing paddle power. The elliptical nose cuts down swing weight so direction changes happen fast, and Kelly's bump-wing round tail gives you a clean release off the back foot. Tomo's own words on it: "It's basically just an alternative high-performance shortboard... a very user friendly design."
All four sizes are open for preorder right now, arriving 8/21.
Best For: Shortboarders who want a shorter, quicker-turning board without sacrificing speed down the line
All three of these boards are chasing the same idea from different angles: keep the response of a shortboard, but make it easier to catch the wave in the first place. If you've ever paddled for something and watched it roll under you, that's the gap these boards are built to close. The Xtra Cado leans furthest toward glide and ease. The Boss Up and Mindcraft stay closer to shortboard feel while adding just enough volume to change what you can catch. Come feel these boards in person before you buy. A spec sheet can tell you the volume and the rocker, but it can't tell you how a board sits under your feet or whether the tail matches how you actually turn. Our team rides this stuff too, and we'd rather talk you out of the wrong board than sell it to you.
That's really the whole point of a board like the Xtra Cado. It's not trying to be everything at once. It's built for the days most of us actually get — small, a little mushy, not much on offer — and it makes those days worth paddling out for anyway.
