LOST BIG RIG DRIVER
The BIG RIG is a scaled-up, high-volume Pro-formance shortboard designed specifically for larger and aging surfers who want to skip the hybrids or mid-lengths and keep ripping on a high-performance shape. Directly derived from the Driver 2.0 and 3.0, it packs extra volume into a thicker centerline with rolled rails and a slightly relaxed entry rocker for easier paddling and effortless speed creation.
WHO
The Big Rig Driver is for surfers who want shortboard performance without the paddle struggle.
- Larger or heavier surfers who need more volume under them
- Older surfers who aren't in the water as often and have lost some paddle strength
- Former shortboarders stepping back up from a mid-length or hybrid
- Once-or-twice-a-week surfers who need a board that works with them, not against them
- Mid-length riders who want shortboard performance but still need glide and easy wave-catching
- Surfers newer to shortboarding who want that feel but find standard performance boards too demanding
If paddling and catching waves is the obstacle — not your surfing — this board removes it.
WHEN
Works in everyday conditions from knee-high to well overhead. In Hawaii, where surf varies day to day and lineups can get crowded, the extra paddle volume and wave-catching ability make a real difference — you spend less energy fighting for position and more time actually surfing. It's not a step-up gun. It's a board you can reach for on any given day.
WHAT
A direct scale-up of Lost's Driver 3.0 — not a dumbed-down hybrid. The relaxed entry rocker and filled-in nose are the key design moves — they give the board a glide and paddle ease closer to a mid-length, while the continuous rocker accelerates through the tail for real shortboard drive down the line. That combination also makes it easier to drop into steeper, bowlier waves without getting pitched.
Built on the same rocker, concaves, and rail shape as the Driver 3.0, with a thicker centerline, rolled deck, single-to-double concave through the tail, and a squash tail. Inspired by the boards Lost has been building for pro surfer Cole Houshmand (6'4", 220 lbs) and scaled for everyday surfers.

Lightspeed II: Lost's S-Glass and Innegra composite construction. Available with FCS II fin system.
➡️What is Lost Lightspeed II Construction?
Lightspeed II is Lost Surfboards' latest proprietary construction technology that builds upon the foundation of their original Lightspeed design while introducing significant material improvements. Lightspeed II maintains the same foundation as the original Lightspeed but introduces new materials for ultra-light and ultra-fast performance.
The revolutionary aspect of Lightspeed II lies in its complete elimination of carbon fiber components. Instead, Lost has developed a custom-engineered combination of high-tensile S-Glass and Innegra composite materials that deliver what the original Lightspeed promised, but with dramatically improved ride characteristics.
The Foundation: Same Base as Original Lightspeed
Lightspeed II maintains the same foundation as the original Lightspeed technology, providing the essential platform for the new material innovations.
Revolutionary Material Technology: S-Glass and Innegra
The heart of Lightspeed II's innovation lies in its advanced material composition. Lost has replaced every carbon component from the original Lightspeed with carefully engineered alternatives that provide superior performance characteristics.
High-Tensile S-Glass Construction
S-Glass offers increased bend range before creasing or buckling compared to carbon, delivering longer board life under pressure. This represents a significant advantage in terms of durability and longevity.
Innegra Composite Integration
Innegra fibers are the secret weapon in Lightspeed II's arsenal. These advanced composite fibers are specifically engineered for dampening vibrations and reducing the harsh, chattery feel that many high-performance epoxy boards can exhibit. The result is a board that maintains all the speed and responsiveness you expect while delivering a smoother, more controlled ride.
➡️What Is a PU Construction?
Classic Feel. Trusted Build. Time-Tested Performance.
A PU surfboard, short for polyurethane, refers to a surfboard shaped from a polyurethane foam core and laminated with fiberglass cloth using polyester resin. This construction has been the gold standard for decades and remains a favorite among surfers who value that classic board feel. Lost Surfboards and many other leading shapers still use PU for its balanced performance, durability, and smooth flex pattern—especially in everyday conditions and bigger, choppier waves.
Even with the rise of lighter epoxy builds, PU remains a solid go-to for those who want predictable, powerful performance underfoot. Whether you're carving up solid reef breaks or chasing the feel of your first board, PU construction delivers.
Key Characteristics of PU Surfboards
- PU foam combined with fiberglass and polyester resin creates a forgiving flex pattern. This provides a smoother rail-to-rail transition that feels “buttery” and comfortable—especially appreciated in more critical or textured wave conditions.
- PU boards tend to be heavier than EPS/Epoxy models, which many surfers appreciate for added drive and momentum down the line. This weight also helps the board handle well in windy or choppy surf.
- Dings? No big deal. PU/poly boards are easy to repair at home or by any surf shop, with widely available materials and lower costs compared to epoxy builds.
- Most traditional shortboards and performance boards—including many from Lost, Channel Islands, and Pyzel—were originally designed around PU blanks. That legacy continues with refined shapes and reliable performance today.
When Should You Choose a PU Surfboard?
A PU board is often the best option if:
- classic surf feel with smooth drive and power.
- overhead surf, reef breaks, or textured ocean conditions.
- a bit of extra weight underfoot for better control on the face.
PU constructions are ideal for surfers who prioritize control and consistency over lightweight responsiveness. From seasoned shortboarders to everyday surfers riding waves across Hawaii, PU boards continue to be a trusted option for a reason.
Why We Still Love PU
At Hawaiian South Shore, we believe there’s no “one-size-fits-all” when it comes to boards—but PU surfboards hold a unique place in surf culture. They’re the go-to choice for reliable performance, time-tested in waves around the world, and especially dialed for Hawaii’s variable conditions.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is the Big Rig Driver just a beginner board with extra foam?
No. It uses the exact same rocker profile, concave system, and rail shape as the Driver 3.0 — one of Lost's most performance-oriented shortboards. Nothing has been simplified or softened for beginners. The only changes are scaled-up volume, a thicker centerline, a filled-in nose, and a relaxed entry rocker. It's a pro-level design adapted for a bigger body, not a different board category.
How is the Big Rig Driver different from the Driver 3.0?
Same DNA, bigger build. The Big Rig keeps the Driver 3.0's rocker, concaves, and rails intact. What changes: more volume throughout, a thicker centerline with a rolled deck, a filled-in nose outline for easier paddling, and a relaxed entry rocker that gives the board more glide on takeoff. If you can ride a Driver 3.0 but find yourself losing the paddle battle, this is the next board.
How do I figure out what size to get?
Email us at sales@hawaiiansouthshore.com or text us at (808) 597-9055 and include: your current board dimensions and volume, what construction it is, what type of waves you surf (beach break, reef break, or point break), how often you get in the water, and where you're located. Size also affects how we can ship the board, so your location helps us give you accurate delivery options. We'll come back to you with a specific recommendation — no guessing.
What inspired the design of the Big Rig Driver?
The design was inspired by Cole Houshmand's incredible surfing and his 6'4"/220lb frame. Lost dissected the boards they've been building for Cole over the last 3-4 years, figuring similar boards could work great for smaller but older, moderately skilled surfers.
What wave conditions is the Big Rig Driver best for?
The Big Rig Driver excels in average surf conditions. It features a curvy, catch-free outline with a modest squash tail specifically designed for average surf. The enhanced paddle power helps you navigate crowded lineups and catch waves in pressure situations.
Is this board suitable for older surfers who still want performance?
Yes, this is exactly what the Big Rig Driver was designed for. It's for bigger and older surfers who still want to rip and refuse to migrate to hybrids or mid-lengths. The motto is "Fight fight fight to that dying last light!"
What are the key technical features?
The Big Rig Driver features:
- Thicker centerline with rolled deck and smooth sloping "not too boxy" rails
- Continuous rocker that accelerates through the tail under the rear foot, but relaxes in the entry rocker
- Single concave throughout, deepest between the feet and mellowing in the front 2' and rear 1'
- Noticeable double concave through the fins and under the rear foot
- Relaxed entry rocker and filled-in nose for easier paddling and built-in glide
How does the paddle power compare to standard shortboards?
The Big Rig Driver offers significantly enhanced paddle power through its relaxed entry rocker, filled-in nose outline, and increased volume, while still maintaining the responsive feel of a high-performance shortboard. No more "flapping around trying to create speed" - the board provides built-in glide and momentum.
