SPROUT 2.0
The Thunderbolt CJ Nelson Sprout 2.0 is a modern noserider designed by CJ Nelson and Ryan Engle and built as the benchmark for what a performance noserider can do. It's the updated version of a shape CJ has been refining his entire career — engineered for stable, drawn-out tip time on the kind of waves longboarders dream of.
WHO
The Sprout 2.0 was made for surfers who care about noseriding done right.
- The traditional logger who wants the most stable platform possible for cross-stepping and hanging ten
- The progressive longboarder who wants modern design refinements — pinched rails, edge in the tail, beveled concave — without giving up classic feel
- The intermediate longboarder building toward real noseriding and looking for a board that rewards proper technique
- The traveling longboarder who needs a serious noserider that can handle baggage handlers and still ride like a heavier log
- The surfer who already owns a high-performance longboard and wants a dedicated noserider to round out the quiver
This is a board for surfers whose goal on the wave is to walk forward and stay there.
WHEN
The Sprout 2.0 is built for the conditions noseriders live for — clean, lined-up waves with a defined pocket and enough shoulder to set up long trim runs. It works in the knee-to-head-high range, with its sweet spot in the chest-high zone where there's enough push to plant the nose but not so much steepness that the rocker fights you. The flat entry rocker means you can paddle in early and set your line before the wave stands up, and the beveled Nuuhiwa-style nose concave generates lift the moment you step forward. Hawaii's mix of glassy summer mornings and clean wrap-around shoulder days is the exact terrain this board is designed for.
WHAT
CJ and Ryan Engle built the Sprout 2.0 around a single goal: extend the time you can spend on the nose without sacrificing the ability to redirect and reset. The shape starts with the relaxed entry rocker of a traditional noserider, then layers in a beveled Nuuhiwa-style concave through the nose that channels water and creates the lift you need to lock in a hang ten. Past versions of the Sprout had softer, fully rolled rails throughout — this version pinches the rails for tighter wave-face connection and adds a hard edge through the tail that sharpens the release on pivot turns. The tail kick has been increased so the back of the board flips up into the pocket, which both holds the board in position during a noseride and helps lift the nose out of the water.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is the Sprout 2.0 only a noserider, or can you actually turn it?
The Sprout 2.0 is a dedicated noserider first — that's what it was designed to do, and it does it as well as any board on the market. But it's also been refined with modern features that let you redirect and reset the board between noserides. The hard edge through the tail releases cleanly on pivot turns, the increased tail kick gives the back of the board real bite when you weight it, and the pinched rails carry more drive than the soft 50/50 rails of older noseriders. You're not going to draw long roundhouse cutbacks or hit the lip on this board, but you can turn from the tail to set up your next noseride, and you can drop-knee it through critical sections. The Sprout 2.0 sits closer to the noserider end of the spectrum than to a hybrid or performance longboard — surfers who want a true do-everything longboard usually look at a different shape, while surfers whose primary goal is tip time choose this board specifically because it commits to that mission.
Who is the Sprout 2.0 for?
The Sprout 2.0 is ideal for:
- Traditional noseriders seeking stability for extended hangs and cross-stepping.
- Intermediate to advanced surfers prioritizing precision in critical sections, though its forgiving design accommodates newer longboarders.
- Travelers benefiting from its lightweight Thunderbolt construction, which resists pressure dingsIntermediate to advanced longboarders
- Riders looking for a more user-friendly noseriding experience
What's New in the Sprout 2.0?
- Enhanced versatility for both noseriding and tail surfing
- Refined tail edge for better pocket control
- Baby step deck in nose and tail for improved control
- Performance-oriented 60/40 rails
- More responsive turning while maintaining classic noseriding stability
"Just trust me, just wait, try it - you'll freak out!" - CJ Nelson
What's the Recommended Fin Setup?
CJ Nelson personally recommends:
- Classic 10.5" pivot fin (his go-to choice)
- Traditional noserider fin
Both options provide excellent versatility and control
What Wave Conditions Does does the Sprout 2.0 Excel In?
Performs in ankle to chest-high+ waves
Handles both clean and blown-out conditions
Excels in steeper, critical waves
Superior performance in softer shoulder sections
Versatile enough for various wave types
What’s special about the Sprout 2.0’s shape?
Key design updates include:
- Tail kick: Added flip locks the board into pockets and lifts the nose during hangs
- Pinched rails: Improve wave-face connectivity without sacrificing tradition
- 50/50 tail with edge: Enhances control for modern performance
- Nuuhiwa-style concave: Beveled design boosts speed and lift
For surfers prioritizing noseriding agility with modern durability, the Sprout 2.0 stands out.
