DRK
The Firewire DRK is the high-performance shortboard Dan Mann designed for Kelly Slater that won Stab In The Dark X — a refined, more sensitive evolution of the FRK built for surfers who want maximum response in good, powerful waves. It's a board that rewards commitment, punishes hesitation, and rewards you back by going exactly where you point it.
WHO
The DRK is built for performance-focused surfers who want a high-response shortboard that disappears beneath their feet in quality surf.
- The experienced shortboarder looking for a more sensitive, more demanding step up from an all-around performance board
- The surfer who regularly rides the FRK or FRK Plus and wants something more refined and tighter in the back half
- The intermediate-to-advanced surfer who surfs good waves often and wants a board that rewards precise footwork and committed surfing
- The surfer building a two-board quiver who wants a dedicated good-wave board that handles real power without going into full gun territory
- The performance surfer who wants Kelly Slater's actual competition shape in a boardbag-friendly size range
This board is for surfers who want to push harder, not for days when you're trying to make average conditions work.
WHEN
The DRK is built for quality surf — punchy, round, and with real power. It comes alive in head-high to a little overhead conditions where the wave has shape and energy to work with, and responds best when the wave is nuggety and round rather than walled and sectiony. The pulled-in tail and forward wide point make it quick and precise, which works in your favor when the wave offers a tight section or a critical lip line, and demands engagement when it doesn't. On flatter, weaker days there are better tools for the job. When the surf is good and you want to surf your best, this is the board.
WHAT
The DRK shares its DNA with the FRK — same bottom contours, same rocker, same fin cluster — but Dan Mann made two deliberate changes to tighten the shape for Kelly. The first was adjusting the rail and foil to sit more balanced under his chest. The second was pushing the wide point forward, which pulls in the back half of the board into a more elliptical, narrower outline leading to the tail. A narrower tail means more sensitivity underfoot and a smaller margin for error — the board reads your input more precisely and responds faster, which amplifies good surfing and exposes hesitation. The result is a cleaner, more pulled-in version of the FRK's silhouette with a round pintail that holds and drives through steep sections and critical turns.
Built in Ibolic with Volcanic lamination, the Revo Max is Firewire's most durable and responsive construction combination. The I-beam EPS core stiffens the board underfoot while high-density parabolic rails allow the board to flex and recoil through turns. The Volcanic basalt fiber lamination adds the response characteristics of carbon with better durability and a significantly lower environmental impact than traditional carbon cloth. In the water, this combination feels lively and immediate — quick to respond to weight shifts and efficient at transferring energy through turns.
CONSTRUCTION OPTIONS
Ibolic 2.0: An I-beam core construction with high-density foam running through the stringer channel and parabolic rails controlling flex from nose to tail, finished with a carbon strip inlay on the bottom deck for added rigidity and a reinforced fiberglass lamination.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What's the difference between the DRK and the FRK Plus?
Both share the FRK's original bottom contours, rocker, and fin cluster — the core of what makes that shape work. The DRK makes two key changes: the wide point is pushed further forward, pulling in the back half of the board into a narrower, more elliptical tail, and the rail and foil are re-balanced through the chest area. The result is a more sensitive, more demanding board. The FRK Plus is designed for versatility — squash tail, more surface area, quick rail to rail, approachable for a range of surfers and conditions. The DRK is designed to do less in average conditions and more in good ones. If you surf quality waves regularly and want more precision, the DRK is the step up. If you want one board that works across more days, the FRK Plus is the better fit.

Is the DRK a board for average surfers or does it require a high skill level?
The DRK was designed specifically for Kelly Slater's personal use and evolved through two rounds of refinement before it was released. Its narrower tail and forward wide point make it more sensitive to foot placement and timing than most all-around performance shortboards — small adjustments have a bigger effect, both positive and negative. Advanced surfers will find that sensitivity liberating. Intermediate surfers can ride it, but they'll get more out of it as their footwork improves. If you're consistently surfing overhead waves with control and commitment, the DRK has something to offer. If most of your sessions are in smaller, inconsistent surf, a more forgiving board will be more fun more often.
What size DRK should I order?
Sizing the DRK depends on your weight, your usual board dimensions, the waves you surf most, and how much performance you want to trade for paddle power. The narrow outline means it runs on the more performance-oriented end of the volume range — most surfers ride it at or slightly above their usual shortboard volume.
