LOST SUB SCORCHER STING

The Lost Sub Scorcher Sting is a collaboration between Matt Biolos and the Aipa Sting design — a higher-volume, easy-paddling performance shortboard built to make radical turns accessible to a wide range of surfers.

WHO

The Sub Scorcher Sting is the performance shortboard for surfers who want more from small, mediocre days without sacrificing turnability.

  • Intermediate surfers ready to step up from a beginner-friendly shape without losing forgiveness
  • Experienced surfers who want a generous, easy-riding board for weaker, messier conditions
  • Heavier or older surfers who need extra paddle power and volume without riding something that feels sluggish
  • Surfers who've ridden the original Sub Scorcher and want more carving ability built into the tail

If you've ever paddled hard for a wave and missed it because your board felt small or stiff, this is the board that fixes that problem.

WHEN

The Sub Scorcher Sting is built for the conditions that make up most of your surfing — knee-high to shoulder-high, soft, or inconsistent. The wide center gets you into waves early and keeps you moving through flat sections, while the Sting tail gives you the leverage to turn sharply when the wave opens up. It also handles the occasional overhead day well, especially in softer, slower surf. Hawaii has no shortage of those in-between days where you want a board that paddles well, catches everything, and still lets you surf with intention.

WHAT

The Sub Scorcher Sting starts with the DNA of the original Sub Scorcher — the board that launched Kolohe Andino's early career — and adds a key structural modification at the tail. Matt Biolos injected the Aipa Sting element roughly 18 inches up from the tail, creating a sharp reduction in width that forms an acute angle. That angle is the pivot point for quick, controlled turns. Above the Sting, extra width through the center ensures easy entry and fast planing from the first paddle stroke. The outline flows into a 6-inch wide shallow swallow tail. The bottom contour runs single to double concave into a spiral vee in the tail, keeping the board lively through flat sections and driving speed into the pocket.

Lightspeed construction brings EPS/epoxy technology to this shape — lighter than PU, with a more responsive, energy-transferring feel underfoot. The board floats higher and paddles faster than a comparable PU build, which works directly with the Sub Scorcher Sting's design intent: get into waves early, move fast, and snap off the Sting when the section arrives.

CONSTRUCTION OPTIONS

Lightspeed: EPS foam core with epoxy resin. Lighter than PU, higher float, more responsive snap.

Light Speed is …Lost’s proprietary construction process for building the world’s most advanced surfboards.

Combining lightweight EPS foam, high-strength epoxy resin, Rapid-Reflex carbon fiber and Innegra fibers that help dampen vibrations, Light Speed boards are extremely lightweight, fast down the line, and proven through thousands of hours of R&D by the world’s best shapers and surfers.

The proprietary fiberglass blend and woven carbon fiber adds strength and pop, loading up under the feet and providing a lively feel through turns, while the two aligned center exo-stringers on both the deck and bottom of the board provide torsional twist for a more sensitive and responsive board.

Meanwhile, the fused carbon fiber tail patch increases strength and transfers more input into the rails. When all of these elements are combined, the result is a fast, responsive, lightweight board that doesn’t sacrifice strength or durability.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is the Sub Scorcher Sting a good board for intermediate surfers, or is it more of a high-performance shape?

The Sub Scorcher Sting sits in the middle — it's a performance shortboard, but one that's specifically designed to be accessible. The wider outline, generous volume, and mellow rocker make it easier to paddle and catch waves than most shortboards in this category. The Sting tail lets you turn aggressively when you're ready for it, but it won't punish you if you're still developing your surfing. It's a good fit for intermediate surfers who want something that rewards progression rather than demanding it.

How does the Sub Scorcher Sting compare to the Sub Driver 3.0?

Both are higher-volume, easier-paddling shortboards built for everyday conditions, but they surf differently. The Sub Driver 3.0 is a more all-around shape — versatile across a wider wave range and more directional in feel. The Sub Scorcher Sting is built specifically for small to medium surf and emphasizes quick, snappy turns off the Sting. If your focus is on making something happen in weaker waves, the Sting is the more specialized choice. If you want one board that travels well and handles a range of conditions, the Sub Driver is the better fit.

What size Sub Scorcher Sting should I order?

Sizing depends on your current board, your volume, the construction you're riding, your wave type, and how often you surf. We'd rather dial this in with you directly than have you guess. Reach out before you order:

Let us know your current board dimensions and volume, what construction you're on, whether you surf mostly beach break, reef break, or point break, how often you get in the water, and your location. Location also helps us give you accurate shipping information and options.
