PARAGON
The CJ Nelson Paragon is a classic California-inspired step deck longboard designed by CJ Nelson and shaper Ryan Engle as a workhorse for the traditional longboarder. It noserides with real pocket-stable tip control and surfs loose and fast off the tail, giving you a single board that handles the full range of classic longboarding without ever feeling pinned to one style.
WHO
The Paragon is for the traditional longboarder who wants one board that can do everything a classic longboard is supposed to do.
- The dedicated noserider who wants serious tip-time stability without giving up the ability to drive a turn
- The traditional longboarder building a one-board quiver who needs glide, trim, and modern response in the same shape
- The progressive longboarder who wants a step deck that turns harder than most logs without feeling like a performance longboard
- The surfer stepping back onto a longboard who wants a forgiving, neutral platform that rewards good technique
- The team-favorite-style buyer who wants the board CJ and his team actually reach for in clean conditions
This is the board for the rider who wants classic feel and modern response in a single shape.
WHEN
The Paragon is built for the wide middle of clean longboard surf — small, soft summer lines where you need to generate speed and step forward, knee-to-shoulder-high days with clean walls and real trim sections, and stronger overhead-friendly days with more shoulder and power where bottom turns and rail carves come into the picture. The even rocker profile lets it hold trim through flat sections and the tail edge keeps it loose enough to drive turns when the wave has more energy. Hawaii's mix of mellow summer windows and cleaner winter days is the exact range this design lives in, which is why a true one-board-quiver longboard like the Paragon stays on the rack here.
WHAT
The Paragon's design is built around being neutral. CJ Nelson and Ryan Engle pulled the rocker into a very even profile across the full length of the board, which is what lets it trim cleanly without bogging and keeps weight transfer predictable when you walk the board. They added a slight step deck — a small drop in deck height behind the front foot — that gives you a clear visual and tactile reference point for where to stand, and helps the board pivot underfoot during cross-stepping and tip rides. The nose has a rolled bottom blended into a deep concave, which creates lift and pocket-stable hold when you're forward, and the back end runs into a modern down rail with a defined tail edge, which is what makes the board release through bottom turns and carry speed through cutbacks instead of dragging.
CONSTRUCTION OPTIONS
Thunderbolt Silver: A hand-laminated EPS construction with internal fiberglass flex components, finished with 6oz and 2oz fiberglass cloth on both deck and bottom. The most traditional-feeling layup in the Thunderbolt range — designed to deliver classic glide and feel with significantly more flex and durability than a standard PU build.
Thunderbolt Black: A hand-laminated EPS construction with internal fiberglass flex components, finished with 6oz carbon fiber and 2oz fiberglass cloth on both deck and bottom. The lightest and highest-performance layup in the Thunderbolt range, with the fastest rebound rate — designed for surfers who want maximum responsiveness without sacrificing durability.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Paragon a pure noserider or can I surf it as an all-around longboard?
It's both, which is the design intent. CJ Nelson and Ryan Engle built the Paragon to be neutral — a true workhorse for the traditional longboarder rather than a one-trick board. The rolled nose with deep concave and the slight step deck give it real pocket stability when you're walked all the way forward, which is what makes it ride like a dedicated noserider in the right conditions. What separates it from a pure noserider is the modern down rail and tail edge, which release cleanly off the back foot and let you draw real bottom turns and cutbacks. So it noserides with classic California feel and also turns harder than most logs in its class. CJ's own description of it — "a favorite of the whole team" — comes from this versatility.
Should I get the Paragon in Thunderbolt Silver or Thunderbolt Black?
Both layups ride the exact same shape, but they feel different underfoot. Silver is the more traditional-feeling build — internal fiberglass flex components with a fiberglass top and bottom lamination, tuned for the closest thing to a classic PU feel while still adding more flex and durability than a standard log. Most surfers who want the Paragon to ride like a traditional longboard with a slightly elevated performance ceiling go Silver. Black is lighter, has carbon fiber in the lamination, and has the fastest rebound rate in the Thunderbolt range — meaning it loads and springs back through turns more quickly. Surfers who want the Paragon to feel livelier and more responsive on the rail tend to choose Black. There's no wrong answer; it comes down to whether you want the board to feel like a refined classic log (Silver) or a higher-performance modern longboard in a classic outline (Black).
What size Paragon should I order?
Paragon sizing depends on your weight, skill level, the conditions you surf most, and how you want to ride it. Lighter or more progressive surfers often lean toward the 9'7", while surfers focused on traditional noseriding or who carry more weight tend toward the 9'11". The right answer depends on the full picture, so contact us directly and we'll help you dial it in:

When you reach out, include your current board dimensions and volume, how you want to ride the Paragon (more traditional noseriding or more performance), the type of breaks you surf most (beach break, reef break, point break), how often you surf, and your location — location affects shipping options and helps us give you accurate delivery information.
