LOST PUDDLE JUMPER STING

The Lost Puddle Jumper Sting takes the most popular small-wave hybrid ever made and gives it a sharper edge. Matt Biolos applied the classic STING tail element — born from Ben Aipa's 1970s designs — to the Puddle Jumper's wide, stable planshape, solving the one thing grovelers could never do: get truly radical.

WHO

The Puddle Jumper Sting is built for surfers who want more from their small-wave board.

  • Surfers who already love the original Puddle Jumper but feel limited when the wave steepens
  • Intermediate to advanced surfers who ride mushy days regularly but don't want to give up performance
  • Heavier or older surfers who need volume and paddle power but still want to surf with intention
  • Performance shortboarders looking for a groveler that responds more like their regular board
  • Travelers who want one board that handles the full range of small to moderate conditions

The Sting adds a tighter turning radius without removing any of the float and ease that made this shape famous.

WHEN

This board is designed for small to moderate conditions where you need more than a longboard but the surf isn't big enough to justify pulling out your performance shortboard. When the waves are playful and punchy — waist-high to a few feet overhead — the Sting's wide platform generates speed through the flat sections while the STING wing allows you to drive hard through turns without the board washing out. In Hawaii, where small days can still produce fast, hollow pockets, this board gives you something to work with from any angle.

WHAT

The Puddle Jumper Sting starts from the same wide, high-volume planshape as the original Puddle Jumper — generous in the nose, wide through the mid, full through the tail — but adds a single STING wing cut 18 inches up from the tail. That placement is deliberate: far enough from the tail to create a meaningful pivot point, close enough to keep the board loose. The result is a board that planes early and holds speed through the flats, but snaps and pivots the way a normal shortboard does when you drive off the back foot. The wide platform no longer works against you in critical sections — it works with you.

The Puddle Jumper Sting is built in Lightspeed and Blacksheep constructions. Lightspeed uses an EPS foam core layered with S-Glass and Innegra composite, delivering a lightweight, responsive feel with dampened vibration. Blacksheep is Lost's dual-density EPS construction designed for durability and a lively, consistent flex — a strong choice for everyday use.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What size Puddle Jumper Sting should I ride?

Most surfers ride the Puddle Jumper Sting 2 to 4 inches shorter than their standard shortboard, depending on their weight and how much float they want. The extra volume lets you size down without losing paddle power. For personalized sizing help, contact us directly — we're happy to dial it in based on your current board, weight, and where you're surfing.

  • When you reach out, include: your current board dimensions and volume, preferred construction, your typical wave type (beach break, reef, point break), how often you surf, and your location (this helps us give accurate shipping information).

What's the difference between the Puddle Jumper Sting and the original Puddle Jumper?

The planshape is nearly identical — same wide outline, same high volume, same easy paddling characteristics. The difference is the STING wing cut into the tail at 18 inches from the tail block. That wing narrows the tail rail line slightly, which tightens the turning arc and gives you a more defined pivot point. The original Puddle Jumper is looser and flows through turns; the Sting is more precise and allows harder, more committed carves without the board washing out underneath you.

Is the Puddle Jumper Sting better as a thruster or quad?

Both work, and the 5-fin box gives you the option to experiment. Most surfers find the thruster setup more controlled for hard turns — the center fin adds hold and prevents the wide tail from spinning out when you push hard through a carve. Quad riders tend to prefer it for generating speed in soft or crumbling waves where drive matters more than rail hold. Try both and see which suits your style and the conditions you surf most.
