MACHADOCADO
The Firewire Machadocado is Rob Machado's most versatile small-wave shape — an avocado-inspired hybrid that blends the paddle power of a fish with the performance range of a shortboard. It's built to make every wave feel worth taking and every section worth hitting.
WHO
The Machadocado was designed for surfers who want more out of weak surf without giving up the ability to actually surf the board.
- The intermediate surfer who's outgrown their longboard or foamie but wants something forgiving and fast
- The experienced shortboarder looking for a dedicated small-wave quiver piece that still responds to real turns
- The surfer who surfs a wide variety of breaks and wants one board that stays fun across all of them
- The older or returning surfer who wants to catch more waves and surf longer without compromising on feel
- The shortboard surfer who wants a break from their standard thruster on slower days
At its core, this is a board for surfers who refuse to let bad conditions dictate how much fun they have.
WHEN
The Machadocado is built for the kind of surf that would bench most shortboards — small, soft, and slow-rolling. Its wide outline and generous volume get it moving early and keep it moving through sections where other boards stall. When the surf picks up toward overhead, the thinned-out tail and turned-down rails give it enough bite and hold to keep up. Most surfers find it at its best in waist-to-shoulder-high surf, though it has real range on both ends of that window. In Hawaii's consistent smaller surf, it's a board that stays in rotation year-round.
WHAT
The Machadocado's outline was drawn from the proportions of an avocado — wide in the middle, with a nose and tail that taper just enough to keep the board maneuverable. That extra width is distributed through the midsection and into a squash tail, which gives the board a lot of forward float and early paddle-in without making it feel like a groveler raft. Rob was precise about the thickness distribution from nose to tail — the board holds volume where you want it and thins out where you don't, so it has the paddle of a bigger board and the tail response of something closer to a shortboard. The bottom features a double concave running into a vee through the fin cluster, which makes rail-to-rail transitions feel smooth and intuitive for a shape this wide.
In Helium construction, the Machadocado is noticeably livelier than you'd expect for its width. The stringerless EPS core paired with Paulownia and Balsa wood rails delivers flex that's light and responsive without feeling loose or unpredictable. Rob has described the parabolic flex from the wooden rails as providing drive on rail and control in critical sections — and that's exactly what it delivers underfoot.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What size Machadocado should I order?
Sizing the Machadocado depends on your weight, the dimensions of your current boards, how often you surf, and where you surf most. Most surfers ride it around the same volume as their everyday shortboard or a liter or two higher. Because it's wider than a standard shortboard, it may feel like a different ride even at a familiar volume. We recommend reaching out so we can help you choose the right size for your specific situation:
- Email: sales@hawaiiansouthshore.com
- Text: (808) 597-9055
When you reach out, include your current board dimensions and volume, what type of waves you surf most (beach break, reef break, or point break), how often you surf, and your location — location affects your shipping options and helps us give you accurate delivery information.
What wave conditions is the Machadocado best suited for?
The Machadocado excels in waves from knee-high to overhead, making it ideal for smaller to medium-sized surf conditions
What are the key features of the Machadocado?
- Avocado-inspired outline for easy wave catching
- Wider and thicker design for stability and grovel-ability
- Double concave for ease of maneuverability
- Vee through the fin cluster for smooth transitions
- Helium Technology construction for parabolic flex control
What fins work best in the Machadocado?
The board is set up as a thruster but surfs well as a twin or twin with a trailer — and fin choice makes a significant difference in how the board feels. Rob Machado's own 2+1 fin set was designed specifically for this shape and is the recommended starting point: it provides drive and hold on rail while keeping the tail loose through turns. Surfers who've ridden it extensively note that a smaller stabilizer fin in the trailer position makes the board more lively and high-performance. Going full twin gives it a speedier, more skatey feel. If you want help choosing fins to pair with your Machadocado, reach out — we carry the Firewire fin range and can help you dial it in.
What fin setup is recommended for the Machadocado?
The board comes with a thruster fin configuration but can be ridden as a twin fin or twin fin with a trailer. The recommended setup is the Machado 2 + 1 Fin Set for optimal performance
Who is the Machadocado designed for?
The board is suitable for intermediate to advanced surfers looking for a versatile, high-performance shape that performs well in smaller waves
How does the Machadocado perform in different wave conditions?
It generates speed well in weak waves while maintaining control in more powerful conditions. The board is known for its fast wraps and quick speed generation
How does the Machadocado compare to other boards in Rob Machado's line?
The Machadocado is considered Rob's most versatile hybrid shape, designed to create speed in weak waves and control speed in good waves
What's the difference between the Machadocado and the Seaside?
Both boards come from Rob Machado and share DNA — they're wide, easy-paddling, and built for smaller surf — but they ride differently. The Seaside is a quad-fin setup with a round tail, designed to be loose and fast down the line. The Machadocado has a squash tail, more surface area through the midsection, and a thruster-based fin setup that gives it more range for actual shortboard-style surfing. Reviewers consistently note that the Machadocado pivots faster, draws sharper turns, and handles bigger surf with more control. If you want pure glide and looseness, the Seaside. If you want glide plus the ability to actually hit the lip, the Machadocado.
