MOE

The Harley Ingleby MOE is a versatile mid-length built to bridge the gap between mid-length and high-performance surfboards. Designed by 3x World Longboard Champion Harley Ingleby and built in Thunderbolt's hand-laminated construction, the MOE shifts volume back under the chest for easier paddling, better foot placement, and a board that catches more waves and carves harder than a typical funboard.

WHO

The MOE was designed to fit a wide range of surfers — Harley built it so size, weight, and skill level wouldn't limit who could ride one.

  • The intermediate surfer who wants a mid-length that paddles like a longboard but turns like a shortboard
  • The shortboarder looking for a board with more paddle power and wave count on slow days
  • The longboarder ready to go shorter without losing the glide and ease they're used to
  • The progressing surfer transitioning off a soft top who wants stability with real performance built in
  • The everyday rider who wants one board that handles small surf, head-high days, and everything in between

This is a board for surfers who want one mid-length that does it all — and for the team at HSS, it's been one of our top sellers since it launched.

WHEN

The MOE is built to cover the widest possible wave range a single mid-length can handle. It paddles into knee-high and weak surf where most performance boards stall, and it has the rocker, rail, and tail design to hold its line when conditions stand up to head-high and beyond. The flat-to-double-concave bottom keeps water moving through soft sections, while the foiled rails and progressively harder edge through the tail give it real drive and bite when the wave has shoulder and power. Hawaii's mix of mellow summer south swells and bigger, punchier days is exactly the kind of variable wave map this board was built for — which is why the MOE has stayed on our rack year-round since 2022.

WHAT

The MOE's design is built around a flat bottom with a double concave running between the feet — a combination that gives it stability when you're paddling and standing up, and clean water flow when you start carving turns. Harley pulled the outline in slightly to keep it responsive, then kept the tail wide enough to hold speed and drive through soft sections. The volume is shifted back under the chest rather than spread out toward the nose, which is the design move that makes the MOE paddle harder than most mid-lengths and stand up cleaner — surfers don't have to shuffle forward and back to find the sweet spot. The rails start neutral and rounded forward, transition through a tucked edge near the fins, then flatten into a low hard edge behind the fins for drive and release through turns and white water.

CONSTRUCTION OPTIONS

Thunderbolt Red: Hand-laminated EPS foam core with internal carbon fiber flex components, finished with 6oz + 4oz fiberglass on the deck and 6oz + 2oz fiberglass on the bottom. Thunderbolt's most popular and most versatile build — tuned to a medium weight that blends the durability and liveliness of epoxy with the smooth, connected glide of a traditional poly board.

Thunderbolt Black: Lightest and highest-performance build in the Thunderbolt range. Hand-laminated around the same EPS foam core with internal fiberglass flex components, then finished with 6oz carbon fiber + 2oz fiberglass on both deck and bottom. Built for the surfer who wants the quickest rebound and the most responsive feel through turns.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What size MOE should I order?

MOE sizing depends on your weight, skill level, and the kind of surfing you want to do. The 6'6" and 6'10" sizes are the more compact, curvy, responsive end of the range — better for lighter surfers, surfers wanting a looser feel, or shortboarders looking for a small step up. The 7'2" and 7'4" are the all-around sweet spot for most riders. The 8'0" is the most stable, easiest-paddling option in the range and works for heavier surfers or anyone who wants maximum wave count and float. The right answer depends on the full picture, so contact us directly and we'll help you dial it in:

When you reach out, include your current board dimensions and volume, the type of breaks you surf most (beach break, reef break, point break), how often you surf, how you want to ride the MOE (more of a small-wave fun board or more of a one-board quiver for mixed conditions), and your location — location affects shipping options and helps us give you accurate delivery information.

Should I ride the MOE as a thruster or a quad?

Both setups work, and the right one depends on your size and the conditions you're surfing. Harley's own recommendation is the FCS Harley large mid set for sizes 6'6"–6'10" and the FCS Harley XL quad set for sizes 7'2", 7'4", and 8'0". A thruster setup gives you tighter turning radius and more direct feel — better for surfers who want pivot and snap. A quad gives you more drive, speed through soft sections, and a smoother, more drawn-out turn — better for surfers who want flow or are surfing weaker waves. Many MOE owners switch fins based on the day. The 8'0" is configured with a 4+1 box layout, which means it can also be set up as a longboard-style single fin with side bites — a nice option for longboarders dropping down in size who want to keep some of that classic feel.

HowĀ does the Moe perform in differentĀ wave conditions?

The Moe performs wellin a range ofwave conditions, from knee-high to 3' overhead. It's particularly suited forsmall to medium waves, but its versatility allows it to handle various surf conditionseffectively

Is the Moe suitable for beginners or more advanced surfers?

The Moe is designed for progression-focused surfing, making it more suitable for intermediate and advanced surfers. Its design features, such as shifted volume under the chest and improved foot placement, allow for better control and easier paddling, which can benefit surfers looking to improve their skills

What inspired Harley to create the smaller version of the Moe Boards?

Harley Ingleby was inspired to create a smaller version of the MOE board after receiving numerous requests from smaller and lighter surfers who wanted a smaller version of the board. Additionally, shortboarders and people who don't need a full seven-foot length board also wanted a more compact version of the MOE board. The MoeĀ Mini is designed to fit in the pocket more easily and provide a more curvy and loose ride.

How does the board handle small, mushy waves?

The Moe excels in small wave conditions. Its design enables tight turns and quick maneuvers even in weaker waves, making it easier to generate speed and maintain movement. The board's dynamic nature encourages surfers to attempt maneuvers beyond their usual abilities, even in less powerful surf

How does the Thunderbolt construction affect the board's performance?

The Thunderbolt Red technology used in the Moe's construction significantly affects its performance. It features an ultra-lightweight EPS core that is 20% lighter than standard EPS. This construction minimizes swing weight while providing a lively feel that adds strength and responsiveness to the board

Can the Moe be used in larger, more powerful surf?

While the Moe is particularly suited for small to medium waves, it can handle larger surf up to 3' overhead. The larger sizes, such as the 8'0" model, offer more float and stability, making them suitable for bigger swells
