THE GEM
The Firewire Taylor Jensen THE GEM is a performance longboard shaped by Dan Mann in collaboration with 3x World Longboard Champion Taylor Jensen, built as a one-board quiver that covers traditional nose rides and modern performance turns in the same session. It earns its name — a diamond-tailed, shortboard-concaved longboard that trims clean on the nose and carves off the tail without switching boards.
WHO
THE GEM is for the longboarder who wants a single board that handles the full range of longboarding without compromising either end of it.
- The traveling longboarder who wants one board in the trunk or the bag that can cover everything the session brings
- The noserider who still wants to draw a real turn off the tail when the wave opens up
- The progressive longboarder looking for a board that trims cleanly without feeling stiff or sluggish
- The experienced surfer returning to longboarding who wants modern response inside a classic silhouette
- The all-around longboarder consolidating a three-board quiver down to one
This is a longboard for riders who don't want to choose between glide and response.
WHEN
THE GEM is built for the full working range of longboard surf — clean peeling walls where you can step forward and ride the nose, slower lined-up days where the board needs to generate its own speed, and stronger surf with real shoulder where carving and holding a rail matter. Shortboard-style concaves keep water moving through weak sections, and the diamond tail gives enough pivot to surf steeper, more critical walls without washing out. Hawaii's range of mellow summer lines and heavier winter swells covers the exact window this board is designed for, which is why a one-board-quiver longboard earns its place on the rack.
WHAT
THE GEM blends two design languages deliberately. Dan Mann took a classic longboard outline — long, wide, and glide-heavy — and added shortboard-style concaves through the length of the board. A deep single concave runs through the nose to create a defined pocket for traditional trim and nose rides, then transitions into a deep double concave through the tail to channel water and build speed. The diamond tail shortens the rail line at the back end for tighter pivot and quicker turning than a rounded pin, without giving up the hold and drive of a straighter tail. A hard edge through the back sharpens release on turns and gives the board its performance bite. The fin placements match what Taylor uses across his signature line, so the board's response stays familiar to anyone already riding his shapes.
Construction is Firewire's Helium Core, built specifically for longboards with a variable flex I-beam stringer that tapers thinner through the nose and wider through the tail — so the board flexes softly where you want glide and stiffens where you want drive. Paulownia and balsa wood rails run the full length of the board to control that flex, and a wooden nosecap added for noseriding creates a stable platform for stepping to the front. The EPS foam core keeps the board light and lively underfoot, and the Helium build is known for quick rebound out of turns — the board loads up and springs back instead of sitting flat.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I ride THE GEM as a single fin or as a 2+1?
Both work, and the setup changes how the board rides. Taylor Jensen's recommendation is a 10-inch single fin for traditional trim and noseriding in smaller, cleaner surf, and a 2+1 setup with a 7.5-inch center fin and 3.75-inch side bites for bigger, more powerful conditions where you want extra drive and hold through turns. Many GEM owners switch configurations based on the day — single fin when it's glassy and you want to step forward, 2+1 when the surf has more size and you want more control off the tail. The board is designed to surf well in either setup.
Is THE GEM a noserider or a high-performance longboard?
It's built to be both, which is the whole point of the design. The wide nose, teardrop single concave, and wooden nosecap are specifically set up for traditional trim and stepping to the nose. What separates it from a pure noserider is that Dan Mann added shortboard-style concaves through the tail, a diamond tail for pivot, and a hard edge for release on turns — so it also responds off the tail with real performance. Against a dedicated noserider, it turns quicker and harder. Against a dedicated performance longboard, it trims and glides better when the surf goes soft. It's designed to live in the middle without giving up either end.
What size GEM should I order?
GEM sizing depends on your weight, your skill level, the conditions you surf most, and how you want to ride the board. Taller and heavier surfers generally lean toward the 9'5" or 9'8", while lighter or more progressive riders often choose the 8'8" or 9'1".
