MINDCRAFT

The Firewire Mindcraft is a minimalist performance shortboard designed by Daniel Thomson (Tomo) and 11-time world champion Kelly Slater — built to generate speed naturally and stay under your feet from takeoff to finish. It packs serious volume into a compact outline, so most surfers can ride it shorter than anything else in their quiver without giving up paddle power.

WHO

The Mindcraft was built for surfers who want a faster, more direct connection between their movement and the board's response.

  • The intermediate to advanced surfer who wants a high-performance shape that doesn't punish them for imperfect technique
  • The shortboarder who feels like they're constantly fighting for speed on average days and wants a board that generates momentum on its own
  • The surfer ready to try something outside a traditional outline — open to a different feel in exchange for more drive and flow
  • The experienced surfer looking for a dedicated daily driver that's effortless in everyday surf but can still handle itself when conditions improve
  • The data-driven buyer who wants the credibility of two of surfing's most innovative minds behind their equipment choice

This board rewards surfers who stay centered, trust the speed, and let the shape do the work.

WHEN

The Mindcraft was designed for the conditions most surfers actually surf most of the time — waist-high to just overhead, with anything from soft and gutless to punchy and well-defined. Its moderate rocker fits comfortably into the curve of a smaller wave without bogging, while its width and parallel outline keep it generating speed across flatter sections where other performance boards lose momentum. When conditions step up to head-high and solid, the bumpwing round tail and low-profile rails keep it in control without changing how it surfs. Hawaii's varied ocean setups — from inconsistent beach break days to cleaner reef surf — sit squarely in this board's wheelhouse.

WHAT

The Mindcraft starts with Tomo's signature parallel outline — wider and more consistent from nose to tail than a standard shortboard — which hides a lot of volume in the center of the board while keeping the rails low and thin. The torpedo nose shortens swing weight dramatically, making the board quick to redirect without the nose getting in the way. Kelly's contribution was the bumpwing round tail: the bump breaks up the rail line just ahead of the fins, creating a release point that allows tight pivots while the round tail delivers smooth, continuous drive out of turns. Bottom contours are deliberately simpler than most Tomo designs — a single concave transitioning to a slight double through the tail — keeping the board engaged and lively without being twitchy or demanding.

In Ibolic 2.0 construction, the Mindcraft has the stiff, controlled response you'd expect from an I-beam EPS core, with an added carbon strip inlay on the bottom deck for increased strength and snap. The fiberglass lamination and bio resin give it a flex pattern that feels familiar underfoot — predictable and direct — without the floaty feel sometimes associated with lighter epoxy builds. It's a board that rewards commitment: the more directly you surf it, the faster and more responsive it becomes.

DIMENSIONS

CONSTRUCTION OPTION

Ibolic 2.0: I-beam EPS core with high-density foam rails for controlled flex, fiberglass lamination, and a carbon strip inlay on the bottom deck for added strength and response. Firewire's updated version of their I-beam construction — stiffer and more responsive than standard fiberglass epoxy builds, with a predictable traditional flex feel.

FIN CONFIGURATION

5-Fin. Rides as thruster or quad. Fins not included.

MINDCRAFT FAQS

What waves is the Firewire Mindcraft designed for?

The Mindcraft excels in small to mid-range surf, typically 2-6 feet. Its sweet spot is waist-high to head-and-a-half waves (2-5 feet). While it works well in small, gutless conditions, it may exceed its limits in double overhead surf. The moderate rocker and front-foot friendly design make it an excellent daily driver.

What size Firewire Mindcraft should I get?

Tomo rides a 5'7" Mindcraft at approximately 28 liters, and he weighs 160 lbs (75 kg) at 5'8-5'9" tall. The Mindcraft packs generous volume into a compact shape, so most surfers can ride 2-4 inches shorter than their standard shortboard. The board's parallel outline and volume distribution allow you to downsize while maintaining paddle power.

Should I ride the Mindcraft as a thruster or quad?

According to Tomo, while the Mindcraft is designed to work equally well as both, he personally leans toward the thruster setup. The thruster configuration sinks the tail and provides more control during lip maneuvers. However, a quad setup offers more speed and flow in weaker waves. Your choice depends on conditions and personal preference.

What fins does Kelly Slater use on the Mindcraft?

Kelly Slater typically rides his Slater Designs Endorfins KSR rake template or the Endorfins KS1 pivot template on the Mindcraft. The KSR is recommended for all-around conditions, while the KS1 offers more pivot for tighter pocket surfing.

What is the difference between Mindcraft ProFlex and I-Bolic 2.0?

ProFlex (Mindcraft X) is Firewire's highest-performance carbon construction featuring a 1.5lb EPS core, carbon Tectonic diamond pattern, and S-glass lamination for maximum strength-to-weight ratio. I-Bolic 2.0 uses a 2lb EPS core with standard fiberglass lamination and bio resin, offering a more traditional flex feel at a lower price point.

Is the Mindcraft good for intermediate surfers?

Yes. The Mindcraft's moderate rocker and front-foot friendly design make it approachable for intermediate surfers. Tomo specifically noted it's "not purely for shredders only" and is "a very user friendly design." Unlike some high-performance shortboards that demand constant back-foot engagement, the Mindcraft generates speed naturally.

What makes the bump wing tail special?

The bump wing breaks up the rail line and creates a release point right behind the front fins. This allows for a straight rail line through the center (for drive) while the tail pivots easily on a tight block. It was Kelly Slater's specific request for this design—combining drive with quick release and pivot capability.
