XTRA CADO
The Firewire Xtra Cado is Rob Machado's mid-length evolution of his best-selling Machadocado — a board built for the days when you want to catch everything, glide through flat sections, and still have the ability to turn when the wave calls for it. It sits in that sweet spot between a shortboard and a longboard, with enough performance built in to keep it interesting across a wide range of conditions.
WHO
The Xtra Cado has unusually broad appeal — it works for a wider range of surfers than most boards in this category.
- The shortboard surfer who wants a mid-length that still responds to real surfing, not just trim and glide
- The intermediate surfer ready to step up from a foam board and start building wave count and confidence on a proper performance shape
- The experienced surfer looking for a designated fun board — something that takes the pressure off and makes the most of softer days
- The surfer coming back from injury or time out of the water who needs a board that paddles easily, catches waves early, and doesn't demand full power to perform
- The surfer who already rides the Machadocado and wants that same design feel in a longer, more forgiving format
This board rewards surfers who want to stay loose, draw out their turns, and keep a high wave count without giving up the ability to push into the pocket when the opportunity is there.
WHEN
The Xtra Cado was designed for smaller, softer surf where most shortboards lose momentum — the kind of days when getting into waves early and keeping speed through flat sections matters more than raw power. Its flat rocker and wide outline generate glide that makes weak surf feel better than it is. When conditions build to head-high and beyond, the pulled-down rails, double concave, and five-fin setup give it enough performance range to handle the step up without losing control. It's the board you reach for when the goal is a high wave count and genuine fun, whatever the conditions happen to be doing.
WHAT
The Xtra Cado starts with the Machadocado's outline and stretches it into mid-length form — a straighter, fuller shape that trades compactness for glide and paddle power. The entry rocker is flat throughout, which keeps the board fast and lets it lock into waves early. The deck is domed to pack volume in the center without building up bulk at the rails — meaning the board carries foam where you need it for float and paddle, but doesn't feel thick and sluggish under your hands. The rails are pulled down to a thin profile, which keeps the board responsive on edge and prevents it from rolling through turns like a typical mid-length. The tail is a wide squash that foils out to a super-thin rail edge — Rob's own favorite detail — which gives it drive on longer turns and the ability to snap tight when the wave opens up. The bottom runs a single concave into a double concave with a vee through the fin cluster, channeling water efficiently and making the board easy to transition from rail to rail.
CONSTRUCTION OPTIONS
Helium 2: Firewire's stringerless EPS core with flex controlled at the rails using Paulownia and Balsa wood and a proprietary deck skin — light, lively, and built to generate speed in everyday waves.

Frequently Asked Questions
What fin setup works best on the Xtra Cado?
The five-fin box gives you a lot of flexibility. Quad works well when conditions pick up and you want speed and drive — it's the most common setup riders reach for in anything with a little push. Twin is the looser, more flowing option for weaker, smaller surf where you want the board to skate and glide. Thruster gives you the most control and pivoting ability if you want to surf it more aggressively. Rob Machado rides his stock 6'8" as a quad with his Machado Seaside Quad fin set as a starting point. There's no single right answer — the five-fin setup is part of what makes this board versatile across conditions. Fins are not included.
What size Xtra Cado should I order?
Sizing a mid-length is different from sizing a shortboard — you'll generally want to prioritize paddle power and float over riding as short as possible. The right size depends on your weight, your usual board volume, and the kinds of waves you're surfing most. We recommend contacting us directly so we can help you dial it in:
- Email: sales@hawaiiansouthshore.com
- Text: (808) 597-9055
When you reach out, include your current board dimensions and volume, the type of breaks you surf most (beach break, reef break, point break), how often you surf, and your location — location affects shipping options and helps us give you accurate delivery information.
What's the difference between the Xtra Cado and the Machadocado?
The Machadocado is a compact small-wave shortboard — typically ridden in the 5'2"–6'2" range — with a wide, pocketable outline built for beach breaks and punchy surf. The Xtra Cado takes that same design DNA and stretches it into mid-length territory. The outline is longer and straighter, giving it significantly more glide and paddle power, and the extra length makes it far easier to catch weaker waves early. What carries over from the Machadocado is the bottom shape — the same signature double concave with vee, the same pulled-down rail profile, and the same wide squash tail with a super-thin foil. The Xtra Cado surfs more like an evolved, performance-oriented mid-length than a stretched groveler. If you love what the Machadocado does in small surf and want that feel in a board that paddles better and works in even weaker conditions, the Xtra Cado is the natural next step.
How does the Boss Up compare to a standard shortboard in terms of volume?
Firewire recommends riding the Boss Up with approximately 13 liters more volume than your standard shortboard. This increased volume contributes to the board's excellent paddle power and versatility across different wave conditions.
