S BOSS

The Firewire S Boss is a high-performance shortboard born from a collaboration between Kelly Slater and shaper Dan Mann — designed to surf faster, turn tighter, and work across more conditions than any conventional shortboard. With volume hidden into a compact, parallel-rail outline, it delivers genuine performance without demanding the conditions to match.

WHO

The S Boss is for surfers who want real performance without having to wait for perfect waves to get it.

  • The advancing intermediate ready to step into a shortboard that actually rewards commitment and keeps up with them as they improve
  • The experienced shortboarder who wants one board that covers everything from beach breaks to punchy reef — without sacrificing drive or response
  • The performance surfer looking for a shape that generates speed on its own terms instead of relying on steep rocker and narrow rails to do the work
  • The surfer who's been riding the same high-performance shortboard for years and wants something that feels familiar but opens up new possibilities on every wave

This is a board that grows with you, and adapts to the lineup instead of demanding the lineup adapt to it.

WHEN

The S Boss was built for the waves that show up most — chest-high and above, across a range of conditions. When punchy beach breaks are firing, it locks into turns quickly and releases cleanly off the top. At a more defined reef or point break, the parallel rails hold a line and carry speed through longer sections without getting stiff or mechanical. It's at its best when the surf has some energy behind it, but the hidden volume and relaxed rocker mean it doesn't shut down when conditions are average. Hawaii's range of reefs, beach breaks, and variable swell direction makes it a natural fit in the islands.

WHAT

The S Boss starts with a bullet nose — a chopped blunt front end that eliminates swing weight and allows the parallel-rail outline to run all the way to the tail. Kelly Slater's concept was to feel the board turn from the rails rather than the rocker, and that's exactly what this design delivers. A low-to-moderate rocker carries speed down the line without sacrificing control, while a unique V contour under the chest transitions into a double barrel concave through the back half and exits out the round tail with speed and directional hold. S-deck foot wells on the deck plant your feet exactly where they need to be. The result is a tight turning radius, fast rail transitions, and surprising control for a board built to fit in small pockets.

In Ibolic construction, the S Boss is firm underfoot and responsive without feeling stiff — the I-beam core and parabolic rail system flex through turns and rebound quickly. The Ibolic+Volcanic option adds basalt fiber lamination over the same core: Firewire's most durable build, with a responsive, lively feel that holds up to hard use. Both constructions feel noticeably livelier than traditional polyurethane without sacrificing the connected, familiar feel that performance surfers want underfoot.

DIMENSIONS

CONSTRUCTION OPTIONS

Ibolic: I-beam high-density EPS core with parabolic rail system — stiff and responsive underfoot, with a controlled flex pattern that recoils quickly through turns.

Ibolic + Volcanic: Same Ibolic I-beam core with basalt fiber lamination — Firewire's most durable construction and their sustainable alternative to carbon, with elevated responsiveness.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who is the S Boss best for?

It's great for intermediate to advanced surfers looking to improve their skills. The board is forgiving enough for those transitioning from longer boards but still performs well for experienced surfers

What wave conditions does the S Boss work best in?

The S Boss is very versatile. It works well in a wide range of conditions, from small waves to barrels. It's especially good in punchy surf with an open face

How does the S Boss compare to a regular shortboard?

Firewire recommends riding the S Boss with about 13 liters more volume than your standard shortboard. This extra volume helps with paddling and makes the board more versatile

What's special about the S Boss design?

It has a unique "bullet nose" outline, parallel rails, and a special bottom contour with a double barrel to V shape. These features help with speed and turning

How does the S Boss perform in small waves?

Thanks to its design and volume distribution, the S Boss performs well in small waves. It's easy to catch waves and maintains speed in weaker surf

What fin setup should I use with the S Boss?

The board works well as both a thruster (3 fins) and a quad (4 fins). Dan Mann and Kelly Slater prefer it as a quad. You might want to use slightly smaller rear fins
