CALIFORNIA MID

WHAT IS THE LOST CALIFORNIA MID SURFBOARD?

The Lost California Mid is a mid-length collaboration between Mark Richards and Matt "Mayhem" Biolos — built for surfers who want the speed and looseness of the CA-Twin with more paddle power and length underfoot. It surfs bigger than it looks and forgives more than a shortboard ever will.

WHO

The California Mid is for surfers who've outgrown the daily fight but haven't given up on performance surfing.

  • The CA-Twin regular who wants more paddle power and an easier entry without changing how they surf
  • The intermediate surfer with solid fundamentals who wants a versatile board that rewards good positioning
  • The experienced surfer scaling back from high-performance shapes but not ready for a traditional longboard
  • The surfer who travels and needs one board that handles a wide range of conditions
  • The heavier or taller surfer who wants the feel of a mid-length fish without the sluggishness of a wide-tailed design

This board meets surfers where they are and lets them keep surfing the way they like

WHEN

The California Mid excels in anything from knee-high to overhead — the kind of everyday surf Hawaii delivers most days of the year. Its low rocker and extra length mean it paddles into waves early, making it ideal for punchy reef break or softer rolling surf where positioning and timing matter more than raw power. The pulled-in tail and twin+1 setup let it snap off the top when the wave has a wall, and the extra glide keeps it moving through the flat sections that would stall a shorter board.

WHAT

Mark Richards and Mayhem stretched the CA-Twin's proven outline into mid-length territory without redesigning what made the original work. The bottom runs a single concave from nose to tail transitioning into a double concave through the fins — a combination that builds speed early and adds drive through turns. The flat deck, down soft rails, and foiled nose and tail keep paddling comfortable and rail engagement smooth. MR's signature winged swallow tail stays true to the original's fast, loose character while lending the pulled-in template more range on wave size and standing position. The low overall rocker gets the board up to speed fast; the curvy rail-line rocker keeps it turning without feeling stiff.

Black Sheep construction pairs lightweight 1.5lb virgin EPS foam with Triax-NCF carbon fiber laminated on the deck. The carbon runs in three directions — 0° nose-to-tail fibers provide lively flex rebound, while +30/-30° cross-axis fibers control torsional twist from rail to rail. Because it's non-crimp fabric rather than woven, it lays flatter, retains less resin, and produces a flex pattern that feels responsive but forgiving underfoot.

BLACKSHEEP CONSTRUCTION

BlackSheepBuilt Surfboards: High-Performance Meets Durability

Black Sheep: Lightweight 1.5lb virgin EPS core with Triax-NCF carbon fiber deck laminate. Fast, responsive, and surprisingly durable. Available with FCS II or Futures fin system.

Key Features:

  • Lightweight and Flexible: Our boards combine the benefits of lightweight EPS foam and flexible carbon fiber, making them both responsive and durable.
  • Triax Carbon: Laminated on the deck with a short bottom lap, our Triax Carbon provides rapid reaction and a forgiving flex.
  • Multi-Layered Fiberglass: Sandwiched with multiple layers of 4oz, "D-size" fiberglass, our boards offer enhanced durability and performance.
  • Unique Performance: The combination of Triax Carbon and fiberglass creates a lively and exciting surfing experience.

The Science Behind Triax Carbon:

Our Triax Carbon features a triple-axis +30/-30°/0 layup, which enhances and controls torsional force from rail to rail. This multi-axial carbon fiber is a significant improvement over traditional woven carbon fibers, as it:

  • Reduces Crimping: Fibers lay flatter, retaining less resin and remaining smoother, straighter, and stronger.
  • Eliminates Weak Points: Unlike traditional woven fabrics, our Triax Carbon has no 90-degree rail-to-rail carbon, reducing the risk of deck buckles, cracks, and breaks.

Caring for Your BlackSheepBuilt Surfboard:

To ensure the longevity of your investment, please note the following:

  • Avoid Direct Sunlight: Carbon fiber surfboards can easily overheat, so avoid leaving them in direct sunlight or in a hot car.
  • Use a Heat Reflective Day Bag: Protect your board from the sun's rays and heat.
  • Properly Care for Dings: Allow the board to dry out and fix dings properly to prevent further damage.

With proper care and attention, your BlackSheepBuilt surfboard will provide hundreds of days of surfing enjoyment, remaining light, lively, and responsive on the waves.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How does the California Mid compare to the California Twin — should I size up?

The California Mid is designed to be ridden 4–6 inches longer than your CA-Twin for smaller sizes, and 8–12 inches longer for the larger sizes. It's not a replacement for the CA-Twin — it's an extension of it for surfers who want more paddle power, glide, and wave-catching range without changing how they approach a wave. If you're already happy on your CA-Twin but want something that works harder on slower or smaller days, the California Mid is the logical next step.

Is the California Mid a good board for someone stepping back from shortboards?

Yes. The design is specifically built for experienced surfers who want more ease and glide without giving up performance surfing. The low rocker and twin+1 setup keep it fast and turnable — it won't feel like a log. The pulled-in tail and winged swallow give it more range than a wider mid-length fish, so surfers accustomed to shortboard positioning will feel at home faster.

How do I know what size California Mid is right for me?

Sizing a mid-length depends on more than just height and weight — your current board, how often you surf, the type of waves you're on, and whether you're coming from a shortboard or moving down from something longer all factor in. We're happy to help. Contact us at sales@hawaiiansouthshore.com or text us at (808) 597-9055. When you reach out, please include: your current board's dimensions and volume, preferred construction, wave type (beach break, reef break, or point break), how often you surf, and your location — location helps us confirm shipping options and give you accurate delivery information.

What conditions is the California Twin Pin best suited for?

The California Twin Pin excels in a wide range of wave conditions, particularly small to overhead waves. It’s designed as a hybrid board that bridges the gap between grovelers and performance shortboards, making it versatile for punchy beach breaks, reef passes, and point breaks.

What fin setup does it use?

The board uses a 2+1 futures fin system(twin fins with a small trailer), optimized for speed, drive, and hold. This setup retains the feel of the original California Twin while enhancing control in larger waves

Is this board suitable for intermediate surfers?

Yes, but it leans toward intermediate/advanced surfers. While it’s forgiving due to its volume and outline, the performance-oriented design (pulled-in hips, rocker) benefits surfers with stronger rail-to-rail technique

How does it compare to fish-style boards?

The California Twin Pin offers more precision and hold than traditional fish boards, thanks to its pin tail and refined outline. It maintains fish-like speed but adds performance capability for steeper waves
