LOST CALIFORNIA TWIN PIN

WHAT IS THE LOST CALIFORNIA TWIN PIN SURFBOARD?

The Lost California Twin Pin is what happens when the California Twin grows up — faster through turns, more confident when waves stand up, and built for surfers who want fish-like fun with the range to handle real surf. A Mark Richards and Matt "Mayhem" Biolos collaboration, refined specifically for surfers asking for more.

WHO

The California Twin Pin fits a surfer who already knows what twin fins feel like and wants to push that style further.

  • The intermediate surfer who's outgrown their fish and wants a board that rewards better technique
  • The regular shortboarder looking to add a looser, more flowing option to their rotation
  • The surfer who wants one board that works from small, punchy days through head-high-plus without feeling out of its depth
  • The surfer coming from the original California Twin who wants slightly more hold and precision in steeper or bigger waves

If you love the speed and flow of a twin fin but want the confidence to take it into more challenging conditions, the California Twin Pin was built for you.

WHEN

The California Twin Pin works across a wide range of conditions — that versatility is the whole point of its design. It's comfortable in soft, punchy beach break where it stays loose and generates speed easily. As surf gets more serious — fast walls, steeper drops, solid reef — the rounded pin tail and pulled-in outline hold their own where a wider-tailed fish would struggle.

Hawaii's variable lineups are where this board proves its value. One day you're in shin-to-waist surf and it glides; the next you're in overhead reef and it doesn't feel out of place. It's not the board for the biggest paddle-out days, but it handles far more than most twin fins.

WHAT

Lost took the California Twin — already a proven design — and made targeted changes to expand its range without losing what made it work. They lengthened it by an inch, increased the nose rocker slightly, and pulled in the forward third of the outline. The hips between the feet were tightened, and the winged swallow tail was replaced with a rounded pin — giving the board its name and the hold that comes with it. Thickness through the centerline was kept for paddle power, but the deck was rolled to maintain a lower rail.

What they didn't touch: the iconic MR Twin + trailer fin layout and the single-to-double concave bottom that made the original so fast. In Blacksheep construction, the board is built on a lightweight 1.5lb EPS core laminated with Triax Non-Crimp Carbon Fiber on the deck and multiple layers of 4oz fiberglass throughout. The result is a board that's noticeably lighter and more responsive than a PU build — quicker to engage on take-off, lively through turns.

BLACKSHEEP CONSTRUCTION

Blacksheep

Lost's EPS/carbon construction — lightweight 1.5lb EPS core with Triax Non-Crimp Carbon Fiber laminated on the deck and multiple layers of 4oz fiberglass. Noticeably lighter and more responsive than PU. Available with FCS II or Futures fin system.

Key Features:

  • Lightweight and Flexible: Our boards combine the benefits of lightweight EPS foam and flexible carbon fiber, making them both responsive and durable.
  • Triax Carbon: Laminated on the deck with a short bottom lap, our Triax Carbon provides rapid reaction and a forgiving flex.
  • Multi-Layered Fiberglass: Sandwiched with multiple layers of 4oz, "D-size" fiberglass, our boards offer enhanced durability and performance.
  • Unique Performance: The combination of Triax Carbon and fiberglass creates a lively and exciting surfing experience.

The Science Behind Triax Carbon:

Our Triax Carbon features a triple-axis +30/-30°/0 layup, which enhances and controls torsional force from rail to rail. This multi-axial carbon fiber is a significant improvement over traditional woven carbon fibers, as it:

  • Reduces Crimping: Fibers lay flatter, retaining less resin and remaining smoother, straighter, and stronger.
  • Eliminates Weak Points: Unlike traditional woven fabrics, our Triax Carbon has no 90-degree rail-to-rail carbon, reducing the risk of deck buckles, cracks, and breaks.

Caring for Your BlackSheepBuilt Surfboard:

To ensure the longevity of your investment, please note the following:

  • Avoid Direct Sunlight: Carbon fiber surfboards can easily overheat, so avoid leaving them in direct sunlight or in a hot car.
  • Use a Heat Reflective Day Bag: Protect your board from the sun's rays and heat.
  • Properly Care for Dings: Allow the board to dry out and fix dings properly to prevent further damage.

With proper care and attention, your BlackSheepBuilt surfboard will provide hundreds of days of surfing enjoyment, remaining light, lively, and responsive on the waves.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What's the difference between the California Twin Pin and the original California Twin?

The California Twin Pin is a refined, more performance-oriented version of the California Twin. Lost lengthened the design by an inch, increased nose rocker slightly, and pulled in the outline through the nose and hips. The tail changed from a winged swallow to a rounded pin, which adds hold in steeper or faster waves. The board is designed to be ridden 1–2" longer than your normal California Twin size. The twin + trailer fin layout and single-to-double concave bottom carried over unchanged — so the speed and looseness are still there; the Pin just handles a wider range of conditions.

Is the California Twin Pin a good fit for intermediate surfers?

Yes, with the right expectations. The California Twin Pin rewards surfers who have developed their rail-to-rail technique and know how to work a twin fin. It's more forgiving than a high-performance shortboard thanks to the extra volume and continuous curve outline, but it's not a learner board. Intermediates who already ride shortboards comfortably and want to try a different style will get a lot out of it. Surfers still working on consistency will be better served by something with more width and less rocker.

What size California Twin Pin should I order?

Sizing depends on your current board, your weight, how often you surf, and the type of waves you're typically riding. Lost recommends sizing 1–2" longer than you'd ride the original California Twin. For personalized guidance, contact us directly — we're happy to help you dial it in.

When you reach out, include your current board's dimensions and volume, your construction preference, the type of waves you surf most (beach break, reef break, or point break), how often you surf, and your location. Your location helps us give you accurate shipping information and delivery options.

What conditions is the California Twin Pin best suited for?

The California Twin Pin excels in a wide range of wave conditions, particularly small to overhead waves. It’s designed as a hybrid board that bridges the gap between grovelers and performance shortboards, making it versatile for punchy beach breaks, reef passes, and point breaks.

What fin setup does it use?

The board uses a 2+1 futures fin system(twin fins with a small trailer), optimized for speed, drive, and hold. This setup retains the feel of the original California Twin while enhancing control in larger waves

Is this board suitable for intermediate surfers?

Yes, but it leans toward intermediate/advanced surfers. While it’s forgiving due to its volume and outline, the performance-oriented design (pulled-in hips, rocker) benefits surfers with stronger rail-to-rail technique

How does it compare to fish-style boards?

The California Twin Pin offers more precision and hold than traditional fish boards, thanks to its pin tail and refined outline. It maintains fish-like speed but adds performance capability for steeper waves
