SCI-FI 2.0

WHAT IS FIREWIRE SCI-FI 2.0?

The Firewire Sci-Fi 2.0 is a high-performance shortboard designed by Daniel "Tomo" Thomson in collaboration with Kelly Slater, built around Tomo's signature Double Bat Tail and Quad Inside Single Concave bottom contour. It's the board that made Stuart Kennedy look like he was surfing in a different dimension at Snapper Rocks — and it's been one of the most talked-about shortboard designs on the market ever since.

WHO

The Sci-Fi 2.0 is built for surfers who want a high-performance shortboard that generates speed without demanding perfect conditions to do it.

  • The experienced shortboarder who wants a board that's fast and responsive without sacrificing range — from weak, smaller surf to solid overhead days
  • The performance surfer ready to try Tomo's Modern Planing Hull approach and see what the bat tail does on their backhand and forehand turns
  • The surfer who's been riding a traditional shortboard and wants a board that rewards commitment in the pocket without losing control at speed
  • The intermediate-to-advanced surfer looking for a board that gives them a noticeable performance step-up across a wide range of conditions
  • The surfer who wants to ride shorter — the Sci-Fi 2.0 is designed to be ridden shorter than your standard shortboard, making the step down feel immediate and accessible

This board rewards surfers who push hard and want a board that pushes back with speed and grip.

WHEN

The Sci-Fi 2.0 is built for a wide range of conditions — from flat-faced, waist-high surf where it grovels with ease and generates speed other shortboards can't find, up through solid overhead days where the wide bat tail controls speed beyond what its outline suggests it should. The Quad Inside Single Concave bottom gives it real grip and drive on the face in powerful surf, while the extra width and volume make it accessible and fun when the waves are weak and inconsistent. It's at its best in average to good conditions — the kind of mixed-bag days that make up most surfers' time in the water — where its combination of paddle power, down-the-line speed, and precise tail control make it genuinely effortless to surf across a wide range of situations.

WHAT

The Sci-Fi 2.0 starts with Tomo's Double Bat Tail — a wide, wing-notched tail design that provides exceptional speed control for how much tail area the board carries. The wide point has been moved forward compared to the original Sci-Fi, making the board looser and more responsive from rail to rail and adding paddle volume where surfers feel it most. The tail is pulled in slightly from the original, which gives the 2.0 more hold in overhead surf without losing the skatey, electric feel the design is known for. The Quad Inside Single Concave bottom contour is the performance engine: deep quad channels run out the back of the board creating real grip and hold in pivot turns, while the overarching single concave through the nose allows the board to plane efficiently on the rails. The channels on the 2.0 extend further up the board than the original, pushing the feel of the concaves into more of the ride.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How does the Sci-Fi 2.0 handle in bigger surf?

Better than most surfers expect from a bat-tailed design. The Double Bat Tail controls speed unusually well for how wide it is, and the deep quad channels running out the back of the board lock the tail in during powerful carves and critical drops. The 2.0 improvements — pulling in the tail slightly and extending the channels further up the board — give it more hold overhead than the original. Firewire rates it up to double overhead, and surfers in Hawaii have surfed it confidently in solid conditions. It's not a dedicated step-up board, but it's not a limitation either.

How should I size the Sci-Fi 2.0 — can I really ride it shorter than my normal shortboard?

Yes — the Sci-Fi 2.0 is designed to be ridden shorter than your standard shortboard. The extra width, the shifted-forward wide point, and the bat tail all add volume and paddle power in places that let the board feel shorter without sacrificing performance. Most surfers find that riding it two to four inches shorter than their regular shortboard puts them in the right range, with the extra liters feeling useful rather than excessive. If you're between two sizes, the Firewire recommendation is to go up — the added foam helps across conditions without making the board feel slow. The right answer still depends on your weight, how you surf, and where you're riding it, so contact us directly and we'll help you dial it in:

When you reach out, include your current board dimensions and volume, the construction you're considering, the type of breaks you surf most (beach break, reef break, point break), how often you surf, and your location — location affects shipping options and helps us give you accurate delivery information.

Should I ride the Sci-Fi 2.0 as a thruster or a quad?

Both setups work, and the right choice depends on conditions and what you want from the board. As a quad, the Sci-Fi 2.0 generates more down-the-line speed and has a looser, freer feel — especially useful in weaker, smaller surf where you need to generate your own momentum. As a thruster, the center fin adds stability and pivot control in the pocket, which makes it more predictable in powerful overhead surf or when you want tighter, more committed turns. Most surfers experiment with both setups across conditions and settle into a preference based on where and how they surf. The five-fin box gives you the flexibility to switch without changing boards.

How does the Sci-Fi 2.0 compare to the original Sci-Fi?

The Sci-Fi 2.0 has a similar outline to the original but with the wide point moved forward, providing more volume and making it looser and more responsive. The tail is pulled in, offering better hold in larger waves. The bottom contours are inverted compared to the original

What wave conditions is the Sci-Fi 2.0 best suited for?

The Sci-Fi 2.0 is suitable for a wide range of wave sizes, from 3 to 8 feet, making it versatile for various conditions

What skill levels can ride the Sci-Fi 2.0?

The board is suitable for improver to expert surfers. It offers a dynamic performance for advanced surfers while being approachable for intermediate surfers looking to downsize

How does the Sci-Fi 2.0 perform in terms of speed and maneuverability?

The Sci-Fi 2.0 is praised for its speed and maneuverability. It provides excellent drive and control, making it ideal for fast turns and high-performance surfing
