HI4
The Harley Ingleby HI4 is the easiest board to walk and noseride in the HI Series — a performance longboard built around a wider outline, an even rocker, and a 4+1 fin setup that lets you ride it your way. It carries the drive of Harley's competition shapes while opening up the trim, glide, and tip time most longboarders are looking for in everyday surf.
WHO
The HI4 is for the longboarder who wants real performance in average conditions without giving up the noseriding feel that makes a longboard worth riding.
- The longboarder stepping back into a competition-pedigree shape who wants something that works in everyday surf, not just chest-high and above
- The all-around longboarder building a one-board quiver who wants a board that walks, noserides, and turns on a rail
- The progressive longboarder who wants to push the board harder on bigger days without losing the tip time on smaller ones
- The noserider looking for a more responsive, lighter-feeling platform that still locks into the pocket
- The intermediate longboarder ready to graduate from a forgiving log into a board with real performance DNA
This is the board for surfers who don't want to choose between trim and turns.
WHEN
The HI4 is built for the wide middle of longboard surf — it starts working in knee-to-thigh-high waves and only gets better as the surf builds. The continual high-performance rocker, with a slight flip in the last six inches of the tail, keeps the board controlled in the pocket on bigger days, while the wider nose and even rocker through the middle let it glide and trim through softer sections that would stall a tighter performance shape. Riders consistently report taking the HI4 out in surf well over head and finding it still locked in. Hawaii's mix of clean small-wave longboard days and bigger, lined-up swells covers the exact range this board was designed around.
WHAT
Billy Tolhurst shaped the HI4 by taking Harley's two-time world tour HIHP outline and tuning it for everyday surf. The board is wider all the way through, with a more curvaceous plan shape between the feet that loosens it up and makes it noticeably easier to turn off the tail. The continual HP rocker carries through most of the board, then flips in the last six inches of the tail to keep the tip out of the way on vertical maneuvers and hold the board in the pocket on steeper drops. A long teardrop nose concave, set behind the nose flip, paired with the wider nose itself, is what makes the HI4 the easiest noserider in the HI Series — there's a defined platform up front that catches and holds when you step forward. The 4+1 fin box layout opens the door to riding it as a single fin, a 2+1, a quad, or a tri — different conditions, different setups, same board.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What size HI4 should I order?
Sizing the HI4 depends on your weight, your skill level, the conditions you surf most, and how you want to ride it — single fin trim is a different conversation than thruster performance. Reach out and we'll help you dial it in:
- Email: sales@hawaiiansouthshore.com
- Text: (808) 597-9055
When you reach out, include your current board dimensions and volume, how you want to ride the HI4 (more traditional noseriding-focused or more performance-driven), the type of breaks you surf most (beach break, reef break, point break), how often you surf, and your location — location affects shipping options and helps us give you accurate delivery information.
How should I set up the fins on the HI4?
The 4+1 layout gives you four side boxes plus a center box, which means you can run the HI4 several different ways depending on the surf. Thunderbolt's official recommendation is a tri-fin setup (Harley XL center plus the two forward side fins) for everyday conditions, and a quad setup (center fin out, all four side fins in) for larger open faces or hollow surf. Many HI4 riders set it up as a single fin on smaller, glassier days when they want maximum trim and tip time, and switch to a 2+1 or full quad/tri when the surf has more size and they want extra drive and control. The board is built to be set up and re-set up — Harley's signature fins for this board come in single, quad, and thruster configurations.
What are the ideal wave conditions for the Harley Ingleby HI4?
The HI4 excels in a variety of conditions, including:
- Waves up to slightly overhead high faces
- Everyday conditions from knee to thigh high surf
- Both small, mushy waves and larger, more critical waves
It performs well in clean, well-formed waves but can also handle some chop.
How does the HI4 compare to other performance longboards?
The HI4 stands out in several ways:
- Balances traditional and progressive longboarding styles
- Wider dimensions and more plane shape curve for easier turning
- Excellent glide and trim capabilities with maintained maneuverability
- Wider nose for easier nose riding compared to many performance longboards.
What fin setup works best with the HI4?
The HI4 comes with a versatile 4+1 fin configuration. Recommended setups include:
- FCS Harley XL tri set for regular conditions
- FCS Harley XL quad set for larger open faces or hollow surf
- Twin fin setup with a small trailer for increased speed (some riders' preference)
Experimenting with different setups can optimize performance for various conditions.
Is the HI4 suitable for beginners or intermediate surfers?
While primarily a high-performance board, the HI4 can suit intermediate surfers and ambitious beginners:
- Offers good stability and paddle power
- Versatile for progressing across different longboarding styles
- Wider dimensions provide more forgiveness than some performance longboards
However, true beginners might find more suitable options in entry-level longboards.
How does the Thunderbolt construction affect the board's performance?
Thunderbolt construction enhances the HI4's performance by:
- Providing a unique flex pattern uncommon in EPS-based longboards
- Offering a lively, responsive feel due to engineered flex and twist
- Increasing durability while maintaining performance
- Available in Thunderbolt Red (fiberglass) and Black (carbon fiber) options, with Black being lighter and more responsive.
How well does the HI4 handle nose riding?
The HI4 excels in nose riding:
- Wider nose and even rocker profile facilitate easier nose riding
- Nose concave helps with stability and control
- Allows for nose riding both on the face and in the pocket
- Considered the easiest to walk and nose ride in the Harley Ingleby series.
How does the HI4 perform in small, mushy waves?
The HI4 performs well in small, mushy waves due to:
- Wider overall shape for generating speed in weaker waves
- Width and rocker profile maintaining planing speed on softer waves
- Thunderbolt construction enhancing responsiveness in less powerful conditions.
