What is a PIVOT FIN?

A relatively straight, long (9- to 11-inch), upright skeg with minimal rake, the pivot fin provides stability while on the nose, while facilitating quick, “pivot-like” changes in direction when turned from the tail.

  • 9 to 11 inches
  • Little to no rake
  • Straight, wide, upright template
  • Maximum stability, but sacrifices maneuverability

WHAT'S AN ALL-AROUND NOSERIDER FIN? WHAT'S AN ALL-AROUND NOSERIDER FIN?

WHAT'S AN ALL-AROUND NOSERIDER FIN?

In contrast to the pivot fin, which sacrifices carving and smooth maneuverability for stability while noseriding, the all-around noserider fin is a compromise that seeks to blend noseriding with more modern maneuvers.

It maintains the length of the pivot fin (for stability), but features a more flexible rake design that promotes rail carves and other turns.

  • 9 to 11 inches
  • Extended rake and increased flexibility in the tip
  • Compromise between noseriding and performance longboarding
  • Provide drive, maneuverability, and spring through turns

WHAT'S A PERFORMANCE FIN?

Performance fins range from 2.5- to 3.5-inch center stabilizers and twin fins to 8+ inch single fins geared toward aggressive maneuvers and barrel riding, in addition to the standard 4- to 5-inch thruster and quad setups that are predominant in modern surfboard design.

  • 2.5- to 3.5-inch center stabilizers providing extra hold to twins and quads
  • 4-to 6-inch twin fins maximize speed/drive and provide skatey feel
  • 6- to 8-inch rake fins ideal for small single fins and 2+1 setups
  • 4- to 5-inch thruster and quad fins maximize performance for modern shortboards
  • Wider = more drive but longer turns
  • Longer (deeper) = more hold but less maneuverable
  • More rake = more stability/control but longer, more drawn-out turns

WHAT'S A SIDE-BITE FIN?

Typically used with alternative, “modern throwback” designs such as 2+1 longboards and twinzers, side-bites are feature the shape of modern shortboard fins, but are typically a bit smaller (in the 2- to 3.5-inch range).

They provide a bit of extra hold through turns, making single fins and twins slightly more aggressive and maneuverable.

  • 2- to 3.5-inch side fins
  • Add stability to single fins (2+1 setup) and twins (twinzer setups)
  • Can be used as part of quad setup to loosen up the board
