MINDCRAFT ULTRA
The Firewire Mindcraft Ultra is a step-up mid-length from Daniel "Tomo" Thomson and Kelly Slater, built to draw smooth, fast performance lines when there is real power in the water. It takes the Mindcraft concept into larger surf, with more length, more trim speed, and the same close connection between surfer and board.
WHO
The Mindcraft Ultra is for surfers who want more board under them when the waves get serious, without giving up a performance feel.
- The shortboarder who needs a step-up for bigger, more powerful days and wants it to turn like a performance board
- The surfer who wants a mid-length that holds a rail at speed instead of just cruising
- The rider who values paddle power and early entry but still wants tight, controlled turns
- The experienced surfer who prefers long, drawn-out lines over quick, busy surfing
- The surfer who wants extra foam for a wider range of waves, with rails that still perform
It suits the surfer who likes to set a rail, stay on it, and let the board carry speed through the whole wave.
WHEN
The Mindcraft Ultra is at its best when the surf has energy. It is recommended for the 2 to 6 foot range with power behind it, where the long parallel outline can hold high-speed trim and the rail engages without effort. It can also be ridden as a mid-length in smaller conditions, and the wave range widens as the board gets longer and carries more volume. For Hawaii surfers, that makes it a strong choice for the days when the swell fills in and a standard shortboard starts to feel undergunned.
WHAT
The Mindcraft Ultra is built around an elongated parallel outline that delivers clean high-speed trim and easy, smooth rail turns. Tomo's Full Length Spiral Vee bottom contour keeps a distinct performance feel through those turns. The torpedo nose carries over from the Mindcraft shortboard and is designed to be forgiving in critical moments, a profile Tomo and Kelly both prefer for free surfing. A bump wing round tail balances the outline and allows tight turns at speed with exceptional control. Medium entry and exit rocker and mid-to-low performance rails round out the design, and the longer lengths carry generous volume without losing that rail performance.
The board is built in Ibolic 2.0, with flex controlled at the rails for a light, strong, lively feel under your feet. On the wave, that shows up as stability and control at speed, with effortless rail engagement in larger surf.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What size Mindcraft Ultra should I order?
The Mindcraft Ultra can be sized as a step-up or as a mid-length, so the right size depends on how you plan to ride it as much as your weight and current boards. Longer sizes carry more volume and cover a wider range of waves. Contact us directly and we'll help you dial it in:
- Email: sales@hawaiiansouthshore.com
- Text: (808) 597-9055
When you reach out, include your current board dimensions and volume, what construction you're considering, the type of breaks you surf most (beach break, reef break, point break), how often you surf, whether you want the Mindcraft Ultra as a step-up or a mid-length, and your location. Location affects shipping options and helps us give you accurate delivery information.
What fin setup works best on the Mindcraft Ultra?
The Mindcraft Ultra is recommended as a quad for the best performance, and that is the setup Tomo and Kelly Slater have been riding. Kelly typically rides either the Slater Designs Endorfins KSR rake template or the Slater Designs Endorfins KS1 template in this shape.
