LOST MOD QUAD
The Lost Mod Quad is a quad-specific performance shortboard built to unlock speed and drive in the everyday waves that fill most lineups. It surfs looser and freer than a typical small-wave thruster, with a wide, skatey outline that generates speed on its own and lets you focus on surfing instead of fighting sections.
WHO
The Mod Quad is built for surfers who want more out of the waves they actually surf every day.
- Intermediate to advanced surfers who feel limited by a traditional thruster in average conditions
- Surfers who are comfortable on performance shortboards but want something with more natural drive and speed
- Surfers who have tried fish-style boards and want the quad feel with a sharper, more performance-oriented outline
- Heavier paddlers who benefit from the high surface area and forgiving nose on smaller days
- Surfers building out a quiver who want a dedicated small-wave weapon with a distinct feel from their regular thruster
If you're tired of working hard for speed in everyday surf, this board does the work for you.
WHEN
The Mod Quad performs best in the punchy, average-to-small conditions that show up most often — waist-high to a few feet overhead, with enough push to get down the line. It handles beach break peaks, shifting conditions, and the kind of days most people would call good but not great. The quad setup generates speed without requiring perfect sections, which means more waves ridden well. Hawaii's reefier spots can bring out the best in this board when the energy is there but the walls aren't always connecting.
WHAT
The Mod Quad is built around a low overall rocker with a fast entry and a drivey tail rocker — a combination designed for speed without needing to pump. The standout design move is the exaggerated rail line rocker: it creates a deep single concave between the feet that transitions into a pronounced Vee behind the rear fin. That Vee acts like a fifth fin, guiding and holding through turns without the restriction of a center fin. The outline is wide and high-surface-area, with a full, forgiving nose, the wide point set back to create hip in the tail, and a moderate swallow that reduces surface area just enough for grip and pivot. The rolled deck and refined rails keep the width from going soft — this is still a precision instrument.
The Blacksheep construction uses a tri-directional carbon fiber deck wrap — one layer running nose to tail and two at opposing 45-degree angles — over a 1.5-pound EPS core with a double-layered fiberglass bottom. The result is a lively, responsive flex that doesn't get stiff or dead underfoot. It's noticeably lighter than a traditional PU and feels immediately alive, especially in smaller surf where energy transfer matters most.

CONSTRUCTION OPTION
Blacksheep: Lost's tri-directional carbon fiber deck construction over a 1.5-pound EPS core with double-layered fiberglass bottom.
Matt Biolos and the team at LOST Surfboards have introduced their innovation in surfboard construction: Black Sheep Technology.
This groundbreaking approach to carbon fiber construction delivers an electric, lively feel while maintaining durability and performance.
The defining feature of Black Sheep boards is their unique tri-directional carbon fiber deck wrap. Unlike traditional carbon constructions, this specialized layup uses three distinct directional layers: one running nose to tail and two at opposing 45-degree angles. This configuration creates a responsive flex pattern while preventing the board from becoming too stiff.
"We wanted to make a really pliable, forgiving, lively kind of playful construction," explains Biolos. The construction keeps carbon only on the deck, stopping at the rails to maintain torsional flex and prevent the board from becoming overly rigid.
Each Black Sheep board features:
- 1.5-pound EPS core
- Double-layered fiberglass bottom
- Tri-directional carbon fiber deck
- Non-crimp weave technology for optimal strength
The result? A lightweight, responsive board that maintains durability while delivering performance in various conditions. Pro surfers are already embracing the technology, with extensive testing at wave pools and in ocean conditions showing promising results.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How do I size the Mod Quad compared to my regular shortboard?
Lost recommends riding the Mod Quad 2"–3" shorter than your normal performance thruster, and going slightly wider. The high surface area and wide outline give you float and paddle power at a shorter length, so going down in length is the right call. If you're between sizes, favor the shorter option. Not sure which size fits your surfing? Contact us — we're happy to help narrow it down.

How does the Mod Quad feel compared to a fish or hybrid groveler?
The Mod Quad surfs with more precision and performance bite than a fish or a traditional groveler. It's not a volume board — it's a performance shortboard that happens to excel in smaller surf. The wide outline and quad setup give you fish-like drive and speed, but the refined rails, rolled deck, and set-back wide point let you surf it with actual shortboard technique. If you're coming from a Sub Driver or a Ripper and want something that unlocks speed in weaker surf without giving up performance surfing, this is the right direction.
Can the Mod Quad handle solid overhead surf?
It's designed for everyday conditions and punchy small-to-medium waves, where it genuinely excels. In clean overhead surf with good walls, it can hold its own — the quad setup and low rocker generate real speed and drive. That said, this is not the board for heavy, powerful days where you need a round pin or a step-up. If Hawaii is delivering proper surf, reach for something with more hold. The Mod Quad shines when conditions are good but not perfect, which covers most days in the water.
