How to Choose Your Surfboard
Selecting the right surfboard for Hawaii's waves depends on your skill level, body type, and where you'll be surfing. Our islands offer diverse conditions—from the powerful North Shore winter swells to mellow South Shore summer waves—and each demands different board characteristics.
Collapsible content
Skill Level Guide:
Beginners (0-1 year of experience) should start with longboards 9'0" or longer, such as the CJ Nelson Sprout 2.0 or Harley Ingleby HI4. These boards provide the stability and paddle power needed to catch waves easily while learning proper technique.
Intermediate surfers (1-3 years) can transition to mid-length funboards in the 7'0"-8'6" range. The CJ Nelson Parallax Plus and Harley Ingleby MOE offer the perfect balance of volume for paddling while allowing increased maneuverability as your skills progress.
Advanced riders (3+ years) will find extensive high-performance shortboard options from Lost and Firewire, designed for critical surfing in quality waves. These boards include specialized shapes for different wave types and performance styles.
Wave Conditions:
Hawaii's wave conditions vary dramatically by season and location. Summer South Shore swells offer smaller, more manageable waves ideal for longboards, mid-lengths, and fish designs. Winter North Shore power (ranging from 6-15+ feet and larger) demands shortboards with increased rocker and drive. Our collection includes boards tagged for specific conditions—grovelers for small waves, all-around performers, and step-ups for size.
Construction Technologies:
Thunderbolt (Red, Black, Silver): Durable epoxy construction used in CJ Nelson and Harley Ingleby boards. Lighter and stronger than traditional polyurethane, with superior heat resistance for Hawaii's tropical climate. Red offers standard performance, Black adds stiffness for power surfing, and Silver provides traditional flex for classic longboarding.
Firewire Technologies: Helium construction delivers lightweight performance with impact resistance. Ibolic and Volcanic Tech offer unique flex patterns and durability. These advanced materials perform exceptionally well in Hawaii's reef break conditions.
Traditional PU (Polyurethane): Classic construction preferred by purists, available in select Lost models. Offers traditional flex and feel but requires more careful heat management in Hawaii's sun.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size surfboard do I need?
Your ideal board size depends on your weight, skill level, and the waves you'll be riding. Beginners should start with longboards (9'0"+) like the CJ Nelson Sprout 2.0 or Harley Ingleby HI4, which offer stability and easier wave-catching. Intermediate surfers can transition to mid-lengths (7'0"-8'6") such as the CJ Nelson Parallax Plus or Harley Ingleby MOE. Advanced riders typically choose shortboards (5'6"-6'6") from our Lost and Firewire collections for high-performance surfing. Call us at 808-597-9055 for personalized sizing recommendations based on your specific needs.
Which brand is best for beginners?
CJ Nelson Designs and Harley Ingleby Series offer excellent beginner-friendly options. The CJ Nelson Parallax Plus and Sprout 2.0 provide stable platforms with forgiving shapes. Harley Ingleby's MOE and Diamond Drive 2.0 are designed for progression from beginner to intermediate levels. All feature durable Thunderbolt construction ideal for Hawaii's reef breaks.
What's the difference between Firewire and Lost surfboards?
Lost Surfboards, shaped by Matt "Mayhem" Biolos, specialize in high-performance shortboards for advanced surfers. Our collection features their Blacksheep, Lightspeed, and traditional PU constructions, designed for aggressive, progressive surfing in quality waves.
Firewire offers a wide range of models across multiple shapers with innovative construction technologies including Helium, Ibolic, and Volcanic Tech. These advanced materials provide lighter weight, increased durability, and unique flex patterns. Firewire's range spans from beginner-friendly mid-lengths to high-performance shortboards, making them suitable for all skill levels.
Do you have boards in stock or are they custom orders?
Our collection includes both in-stock boards ready for immediate processing and coming-soon preorders. In-stock orders are processed within 1-2 business days. Preorder boards typically arrive within 4-8 weeks depending on the shaper's production schedule. Use our filters to view only "IN-STOCK" items, or contact us at 808-597-9055 to check availability on specific models.
What is your return policy on surfboards?
All surfboards are final sale and cannot be returned or exchanged. A $200 non-refundable deposit is required for surfboard purchases. If you cancel an order after placing your deposit, a 20% restocking fee (based on the original full price) applies. For custom or special-order boards, deposits are forfeited upon cancellation. We recommend calling us at 808-597-9055 before purchasing to ensure you're selecting the right board for your needs.
Can I get help choosing the right board?
Yes! Our team has decades of combined experience surfing Hawaii's breaks and helping customers find their perfect board. Call us at 808-597-9055 or email sales@hawaiiansouthshore.com, and we'll discuss your skill level, local breaks, body type, and surfing goals to recommend the ideal board. We'd rather spend time helping you choose correctly than have you riding the wrong board. Visit us in person at 320 Ward Avenue #111, Honolulu, HI 96814.
What fin setups do these boards use?
Our collection includes multiple fin configurations:
Single Fin: Traditional longboard setup (CJ Nelson Sprout 2.0, Slasher Low Pro)
2+1 Setup: Single fin with side bites for added control (CJ Nelson Parallax Plus, Firewire The Gem)
Twin Fin: Speed and looseness for small waves (Firewire Great White Twin, Lost California Twin)
Thruster (3-fin): Versatile all-around performance (most Lost shortboards)
Quad (4-fin): Drive in smaller waves (Firewire Seaside, Lost Mod Quad)
5-Fin Convertible: Maximum versatility, ride as thruster or quad (Firewire Boss Up, Lost Pisces)
4+1 Setup: Harley Ingleby's unique configuration (Diamond Drive 2.0, HIHP Speed)
Check individual product pages for specific fin systems (FCS, Futures, or fixed boxes).
How do I care for my surfboard in Hawaii's climate?
Hawaii's intense sun and heat require proper board care. Never leave your board in direct sunlight or in your car, as heat can delaminate both epoxy and PU constructions. Always store boards in a cool, shaded area. Rinse with fresh water after each session to remove salt buildup. Repair dings immediately to prevent water absorption, which can lead to delamination and added weight. Thunderbolt construction (used in CJ Nelson and Harley Ingleby boards) and Firewire's advanced technologies (Helium, Ibolic, Volcanic) offer superior heat resistance compared to traditional polyurethane, making them well-suited for Hawaii's tropical conditions.
