TJ SPECIAL T

The Firewire Taylor Jensen Special T is a traditional longboard designed by shaper Dan Mann and 3x World Longboard Champion Taylor Jensen for surfers who want the classic noseriding feel of an old-school log with the performance advantages of modern construction. It's a trim-and-glide board built for stepping to the nose, drawing long lines, and surfing with style.

WHO

The Special T is for the longboarder whose first love is traditional style — smooth trim, long noserides, and the elegance of old-school longboarding.

  • The traditional longboarder who wants a dedicated noserider with modern build quality and durability
  • The surfer learning to step to the nose who needs a stable, forgiving board that rewards good footwork
  • The experienced longboarder drawn to the classic style of boards like the Phil Edwards era
  • The stylist who values flow, glide, and trim over aggressive rail carves
  • The rider who wants one longboard for everyday small-to-medium surf without the weight of a traditional heavy log

This is the board for surfers who want to surf with grace and let the wave do the work.

WHEN

The Special T is built for the wide middle of everyday longboard surf — clean peeling walls where you can step forward and stall in the pocket, softer lined-up waves where a flat rocker and wide nose generate speed through flat sections, and playful days with shoulder where you can still draw a turn off the tail. Its relaxed nose entry rocker and flat bottom curve make it exceptionally easy to catch waves early and ride them with stability, which is exactly what you want when conditions are mellow and the goal is stylish trim rather than critical maneuvers. Hawaii's consistent summer lines and softer winter inside sections are the kind of surf this board was designed to thrive in.

WHAT

The Special T is a traditionally outlined rounded pintail longboard with the specific design moves a noserider needs to hold the tip. Dan Mann gave it a flat rocker to lock water under the board for stability and easy wave catching, a wide nose to create a stable platform up at the front, and a rounded pintail that holds in the pocket so the nose stays planted when you step forward. The soft 50/50 rails carry a traditional curve through most of the board before leading into a tucked edge in the tail, which gives it the smooth, forgiving feel of a classic log while still letting you drive off the back foot when you want to. A scoop nose concave and extra tail flip round out the design — the scoop stabilizes the nose during long hangs, and the tail flip gives the back end just enough pop to turn when the wave calls for it.

CONSTRUCTION OPTION

Helium2: An EPS foam core built with a variable flex I-beam stringer and Paulownia and balsa wood rails running the full length of the board, finished with a wooden nosecap for noseriding. Light, lively, and responsive, with flex tuned softer through the nose and firmer through the tail.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size Special T should I order?

Special T sizing depends on your weight, skill level, the conditions you surf most, and how you want to ride it. Lighter surfers and more progressive riders often lean toward the 8'0" or 8'6", while heavier surfers or those who want maximum glide and paddle power go for the 9'3", 9'6", or 9'9". The right answer depends on the full picture, so contact us directly and we'll help you dial it in:

When you reach out, include your current board dimensions and volume, how you want to ride the Special T (more traditional noseriding or more all-around surfing), the type of breaks you surf most (beach break, reef break, point break), how often you surf, and your location — location affects shipping options and helps us give you accurate delivery information.

Is the Special T a noserider or an all-around longboard?

It's built primarily as a noserider, and that's what it does best. The flat rocker, wide nose, scoop nose concave, and wooden nosecap are all designed to stabilize and reward stepping to the tip. What separates it from a pure traditional log is that Dan Mann gave it a tucked edge in the tail and an extra tail flip, which means you can still draw a turn and get the back end to respond when the wave opens up. Compared to a modern performance longboard like a high-performance thruster log, the Special T trades sharp rail response for classic glide and trim. Compared to a heavy traditional log, it's lighter, livelier, and easier to paddle and carry. If your priority is style, noseriding, and smooth flow, this is a board that was designed exactly for you.

Should I ride the Special T as a single fin or as a 2+1?

Both work, and the setup you choose changes how the board surfs. Taylor Jensen's approach is to run a single fin in smaller, cleaner conditions for traditional trim and noseriding — the pure classic feel — and to add the two side bites for a 2+1 setup when the surf picks up and you want more drive and hold through turns off the tail. A lot of Special T owners switch configurations based on the day. Single fin when the waves are mellow and you want to step forward and cruise, 2+1 when the surf has more size or push and you want the extra bite off the back foot. The board is built to work well in either setup.

What makes the Special T a blend of modern and classic design?

The Special T combines the timeless elegance of traditional designs with the performance needs of modern surfers.

It incorporates features like soft 50/50 rails for a smooth ride, a scoop nose concave for enhanced noseriding, an extra tail flip for maneuverability, and a relaxed nose entry rocker to improve tip riding.

What is Helium Core Technology and how does it enhance the board's performance?

Helium Core Technology combines lightweight materials with structural ingenuity for a responsive and speedy experience.

It includes a lightweight EPS core for buoyancy and maneuverability, an I-beam stringer for strength and adaptability to wave conditions, and Paulownia and Balsa rails for controlled flex and better speed generation

What is TimberTek Technology?

TimberTek construction represents a significant step forward towards the holy grail of any product designed and manufactured in today's environmentally conscious world.

Firewire's TimberTek has by far one of the least toxic and smallest carbon footprints of any commercially available surfboard today.

Is the Special T suitable for all surfers?

The Special T is perfect for surfers who appreciate the classic style of traditional longboarding but also desire modern performance enhancements.

It's an excellent choice for those who enjoy noseriding and want a board that can handle a variety of wave conditions with ease, suitable for both seasoned longboarders and newcomers

In what wave conditions does the Special T perform best?

The Special T excels in beach breaks and softer waves, offering a great balance of ease-of-wave-catching and ride stability.

Its design is tailored for smooth, flowing longboarding, making it ideal for surfers looking to enjoy elegant trims and stylish maneuvers
