Choosing a Surfboard: FAQ
Answers from HSS in Honolulu on picking a surfboard: beginner boards, brands, sizing and custom orders.
What surfboard should a beginner buy?
A long, wide soft-top is the easiest start. More length and width make it easier to paddle and catch waves. HSS's existing FAQ says the same. If you have been on a soft-top for a while and want to progress, call or stop in and HSS will help you pick the next board.

Does HSS have a big selection of Lost surfboards?
Yes. HSS has a large selection of Lost surfboards online and in the shop, including models like RNF '96, Sub Driver 3.0, Big Rig Driver, Quiver Killer, MOD Quad, Puddle Jumper and The Ripper. Browse the full range in the Lost collection: Lost Surfboards Hawaii
What size surfboard should I get for my weight and ability?
Match volume (liters) to your weight and skill: more volume for beginners and small waves, less for high-performance riding. A common rule from the HSS blog: go up 2–4 L from your shortboard volume for a twin or fish-style board in small, soft surf. Every Lost and Firewire listing shows the dimensions and volume in the title (for example "V34.55"). Not sure? Call (808) 597-9055.
What is Thunderbolt Technology and can I customize a Thunderbolt board?
Thunderbolt is an EPS-core construction with an internal flex-control component tuned for each model; boards are 100% hand layups. Thunderbolt boards from CJ Nelson, Harley Ingleby, Ben Skinner and others cannot have changed dimensions or custom colors.
Can I custom order a board through HSS?
HSS takes custom orders for Lost and JS Industries surfboards, using an order form on the site.
What is the difference between a longboard, mid-length and shortboard?
Longboards are over about 9 ft and are the easiest to paddle in small waves. Mid-lengths (about 6'10"–8'6") are a bridge for beginners and anyone wanting an alternative to a shortboard. Shortboards are the most maneuverable and need more skill and wave power.
