Fin Sizing and Fit: FAQ
Answers from HSS in Honolulu on surfboard fins: FCS II vs Futures, sizing and templates.
What is the difference between FCS II and Futures fins?
They are two different fin plug systems and are not interchangeable. Your board has either FCS II plugs or Futures boxes; buy the system your board has. HSS lists the fin system in every board title (for example "…- FCS II" or "…- FUTURES").

How do I know which fin system my board has?
Check the board's listing title, which names the fin system (for example "FCS II" or "FUTURES"). Not sure? Bring the board in or call HSS at (808) 597-9055.
What size fins do I need?
Fins are sized mostly by rider weight. Example from the site: the Futures THRUSTER AM1 Techflex Rake Template is listed in Medium for 145–175 lbs. Check the weight range on each fin listing, and use the HSS fin guides: Futures Futures Fin Guide · FCS II Fcs Ii Fin Clinic By Hawaiian South Shore
Should I use bigger or smaller fins in small waves?
Generally larger side fins in small waves for more drive; smaller fins in bigger, more powerful surf. A larger center fin slows the board down. Larger fins also need a wider turning radius.
What do rake, pivot and neutral fin templates mean?
Rake fins are drawn back for extra drive and big carves. Pivot fins are more upright for a looser feel and tighter turns. Neutral fins balance the two.

What is the Futures "Ride Number"?
A 1–10 scale. Lower numbers (1–4) give more control in powerful surf; higher numbers (7–10) give more speed and responsiveness in small to medium waves; 4–7 is balanced.
What is the difference between FCS II Accelerator, Performer, Carver and Reactor fins?
They are FCS II fin families. Accelerator = speed, flow and response with added control, good for critical overhead waves (example: "FCS II THRUSTER Accelerator PC Carbon +AirCore - Red/Black"). What fins work for a Harley Ingleby mid-length?
HSS carries FCS II fins designed for the Harley Ingleby MID line, for example "FCS II QUAD REAR Harley Ingleby Mid Performance Core Large White" and the FCS Harley Ingleby collection: Shop Fcs Harley Ingleby Surfboard Fins Honolulu Hawaii
How do I choose a longboard fin?
It depends on the style: single fins for classic trim and noseriding, 2+1 setups for a bit more control and maneuverability, with pivot, rake or all-round templates for different feels. Read the HSS guide Understanding Fin Options For Longboards and shop Shop Longboard Fins (examples: "Takayama HALO CENTER FIN 6.5"-10.5" Smoke", "SINGLE FIN True Ames Greenough 4A Orchid").
Thruster, quad or twin: which setup is right?
Thruster is the all-round compromise. Quads add drive and hold; twins are fastest but loosest. A 2+1 or twin-with-stabilizer are alternative setups.
