DONALD TAKAYAMA
DT EGG

Designed by Donald for smooth surfing and easy wave-catching, the DT Egg is the board many credit with kickstarting the modern mid-length movement. Step down from a longboard for more maneuverability, or step up from a shortboard for more waves on small days. It's the perfect in-between.
How It Surfs
  • Full nose flows into full rails through the middle for effortless glide
  • Pulls into a narrower tail so you can trim high or step back and drive
  • Easy paddler that gets you into waves early, even in a crowded lineup
  • A more maneuverable alternative to a 9-foot-plus longboard
Thunderbolt Advantages
  • Hand-laminated EPS/epoxy with Thunderbolt's proprietary AVT flex technology
  • Flex profile engineered to the Takayama team's standards for sweet spot, rebound, and projection
  • Lighter, livelier, and more durable than traditional construction

DT EGG

The Donald Takayama DT Egg is a mid-length built for smooth surfing and easy wave-catching, and it's the design many credit with starting the modern mid-length movement. It sits right between a longboard and a shortboard: it paddles and glides like a bigger board, and it turns like a smaller one.

WHO

The DT Egg is for surfers who want more waves and more fun without being locked into a longboard or a shortboard.

  • The longboarder stepping down who wants a shorter board that turns more easily
  • The shortboarder moving up who wants more wave count and more fun on smaller days
  • The beginner ready to move off a foam board who needs paddle power and stability to progress
  • The all-around surfer who wants one board that works from small days to head-high-plus days
  • The experienced surfer who wants a relaxed, flowing board for cruising and trimming

From first real board to daily driver, the DT Egg fits surfers at every skill level, from beginner to advanced.

WHEN

The DT Egg is built for small surf up to head-high-plus. On soft, slow days, the full outline and volume get you into waves early and keep you gliding through flat sections where a shortboard would bog down. As the waves get bigger and steeper, the narrower tail gives you enough hold and control to set a line and drive off the back foot. When a lineup is crowded, it gives you an edge by getting you into waves early. That range covers most of the everyday conditions a Hawaii surfer sees, from mellow reef waves to punchier beach-break days.

WHAT

The DT Egg's outline does the work. A full nose flows into full rails through the midsection, which gives the board its paddle speed, stability, and easy glide. The outline then pulls into a narrower tail, so the board has two gears: stay in the middle and trim high on the wave, or step back and drive and turn off the tail. It's a classic egg shape that works the way you want to surf it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the DT Egg a good board for beginners?

Yes. The DT Egg is designed for surfers of every skill level, from beginner to advanced. The full nose and full rails give a newer surfer the paddle power, stability, and early wave entry needed to catch more waves and stand up with confidence. The narrower tail means the board keeps rewarding you as your turning improves. That's why the DT Egg is a common step off a foam board, and also a board experienced surfers keep in their quiver for small and crowded days.

Should I ride the DT Egg as a single fin or a 2+1?

The DT Egg has a 2+1 fin setup, so you can ride it either way. With only a center fin, it feels smoother and more drawn-out, which suits trimming and flowing lines on softer waves. With side fins added next to the center fin, it gets more hold and drive when you turn off the tail, which helps when the waves have more push. Many egg riders start with the 2+1 for control and then try the single fin on small, clean days. Fins are sold separately. Ask us if you want help choosing a fin setup.

What size DT Egg should I order?

The right DT Egg size depends on your weight, skill level, the boards you ride now, and the waves you surf most. Contact us directly and we'll help you choose:

When you reach out, include your current board dimensions and volume, which construction you're considering, the breaks you surf most (beach break, reef break, or point break), how often you surf, and your location. Also tell us how you want to ride it: mostly as a small-wave glider, or as a one-board quiver for mixed conditions. Your location affects shipping options and helps us give you accurate delivery information.
