OUTLIER X

The CJ Nelson Outlier X is a performance egg designed by CJ Nelson and Ryan Engle — a board that paddles and catches waves like a much bigger board but surfs like a modern shortboard. Built to handle everything from knee-high junk to double-overhead conditions on a single outline, it's the performance egg for surfers who want one board that actually does it all.

WHO

The Outlier X is for surfers who want serious wave-catching power in a board that still pivots, turns, and holds its own in real surf.

  • The intermediate surfer looking for a board that makes paddling effortless without giving up performance when the surf turns on
  • The shortboarder who wants more wave count on weaker days but refuses to sacrifice turn response when conditions get better
  • The longboarder ready to size down into something shorter, quicker, and more maneuverable without losing glide and paddle ease
  • The progressive surfer who wants one board for the travel bag — something that handles mushy days, clean walls, and overhead power equally well
  • The heavier or stronger surfer who needs extra float and paddle advantage but still wants a board that bites into a turn

This is the board for surfers who refuse to pick between ease and performance.

WHEN

The Outlier X is built to perform across the widest possible range of conditions on a single outline. Its rolled entry and constant-curve outline let it trim cleanly through soft, underpowered sections where most performance boards bog down, and its modern rocker and performance rails give it the pivot and release needed to handle clean head-high walls and serious overhead power. Hawaii's mix of smaller summer days and stronger winter swells is exactly the range this board is designed for — a board that makes the worst days fun and still holds its own when the surf gets real.

WHAT

The Outlier X is built around a rolled entry that feeds water smoothly under the nose, letting the board trim cleanly and carry speed without the constant pumping that shorter, flatter boards demand. From there, a constant-curve outline keeps the rail line continuous from nose to tail, which is what gives the board its signature feel of riding much shorter than its actual length. The modern rocker profile has enough pivot in the tail to let the board release and turn tight when the surf has real power, while performance rails sharpen into a defined edge for drive and hold through carves. The 2+1 fin box gives riders the option to run a single fin for classic trim-heavy surfing or add side fins for more drive and hold.

DIMENSIONS

CONSTRUCTION OPTIONS

Thunderbolt Red: A hand-laminated EPS foam core with internal carbon fiber flex components, glassed with 6oz + 4oz fiberglass on the deck and 6oz + 2oz on the bottom. Tuned to a medium weight that blends the durability and liveliness of epoxy with the smooth, connected glide of a traditional polyester build. Thunderbolt's most popular and most versatile construction.

Thunderbolt Black: The lightest and highest-performance Thunderbolt construction. An EPS foam core with internal fiberglass flex components, hand-laminated with 6oz carbon fiber plus 2oz fiberglass on both deck and bottom. The quickest rebound rate in the Thunderbolt range — designed for surfers who want maximum response and precision in powerful waves.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who is the Outlier X for?

The Outlier X

is specifically designed for surfers looking to push their performance without sacrificing paddle power and wave-catching ability.

It's perfect for surfers who want one board that can handle both small, mushy days and overhead conditions while allowing for progressive maneuvers.

What is the difference between the Outlier and Outlier X?

Key differences:

  • The original Outlier has softer rails and a more traditional hull shape for cruising
  • The Outlier X features performance-oriented down rails for sharper turns
  • The X has a more aggressive rocker profile for enhanced maneuverability
  • The X is designed for contemporary surfing maneuvers rather than classic cruising

What is the construction of the Outlier X?

The boards are built in Thunderbolt Red construction, which provides a balance of strength, durability, and flexibility and Thunderbolt Black lightest and most high-performance based technology.

What fin setups are available for the Outlier X?

The Outlier X can be set up as a 2 + 1 or Twin Fin.

How does the Outlier X perform in different wave conditions?

The Outlier X is a true all-arounder, a surfboard that can handle a wide range of wave conditions with ease.

As CJ Nelson himself states,"The Outlier X will paddle and catch waves with ease and perform like a modern day shorty."

This board's versatility is a result of its carefully crafted features, including a rolled entry, performance rails, and a modern rocker.

Who shaped the Outlier X?

The Outlier X is a collaboration between CJ Nelson and Ryan Engle. It combines CJ's expertise in progressive longboarding with Ryan's shaping precision. While CJ handled the concept and design, Ryan translated this vision into the physical shape.
