SCORPION 2
The Donald Takayama Scorpion 2 is a high-performance longboard–shortboard hybrid that lets you ride shorter than a conventional longboard without losing the speed, control and turning ability Donald built his name on. It's small but mighty, and it's one of the fastest-paddling, most maneuverable shapes in the Takayama lineup.
WHO
The Scorpion 2 was made for surfers who want longboard paddle power and wave count in a board short enough to really turn.
- The longboarder who wants to step down to a shorter board without giving up easy wave-catching
- The shortboarder who needs a fast-paddling board for the days their regular board won't get into waves
- The intermediate surfer who wants one forgiving board that can grow with them across a wide range of conditions
- The experienced surfer building a quiver who wants a board that changes character with a fin swap
- The everyday surfer who cares most about catching more waves and having more fun on each one
This board is for surfers who want to paddle like a log and turn like something much shorter.
WHEN
The Scorpion 2 is built to maximize wave count, starting on small, soft days when most boards struggle to get going. Its paddle speed and glide get you into waves early and carry you through slow sections. When the surf picks up, the easy tail control lets you step it up for more powerful days, and it's designed to hold on into well-overhead surf. That range, from groveler to step-up, fits the mix of mellow and punchy days Hawaii surfers see through the year.
WHAT
The Scorpion 2 is Donald's rework of his original Scorpion. It has a wider tail, a narrower nose and a more rounded-out template. The extra tail volume lets you ride it shorter than you'd expect, and the narrower nose keeps it from feeling like too much board up front. A pulled-in V through the pintail makes rail-to-rail transitions quick and easy. The result is effortless cutbacks, tight bottom turns and strong drive off the tail. Ridden short, it works like a mini noserider pintail: plenty of trim and glide, with a tail that turns on command. The fin setup is flexible too, so the same board can surf as a single fin, a 2+1 or a quad.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size Scorpion 2 should I order?
The Scorpion 2 is designed to be ridden shorter than most surfers expect. Its wide tail and generous volume mean a shorter length still paddles and catches waves easily. The right size depends on your weight, the boards you ride now, how you like to surf and the waves you surf most. Contact us directly and we'll help you choose:
- Email: sales@hawaiiansouthshore.com
- Text: (808) 597-9055
When you reach out, include:
- your current board dimensions and volume
- which construction you're considering
- the breaks you surf most (beach break, reef break or point break)
- how often you surf
- your location
- how you want to ride it: mostly as a small-wave board for soft days, or as a one-board quiver you'll step up into more powerful surf
Your location affects shipping options and helps us give you accurate delivery information.
What fin setup should I ride in the Scorpion 2?
The Scorpion 2 has a center fin box and four side fin plugs, and Takayama designed it to be set up as a single fin, a 2+1 or a quad. In general:
- Single fin gives the smoothest, most drawn-out feel, with the most trim and glide.
- 2+1 adds side fins for extra hold and drive through turns while keeping the trim of a center fin.
- Quad leaves the center box empty and runs four side fins for speed and a looser, quicker feel.
Swapping setups is the easiest way to change how the board rides from one session to the next. If you're not sure where to start, contact us and we'll help you match fins to your waves.
Is the Scorpion 2 a shortboard, a mid-length or a longboard?
Takayama describes it as a high-performance longboard–shortboard hybrid, and that's the most accurate way to think about it. Its lengths look like a mid-length, but it's built to ride like a shortened longboard. It has enough volume and glide to catch waves early and trim, plus a pulled-in pintail that turns tighter than a longboard can. That makes it a natural step down for longboarders and a small-wave or everyday board for shortboarders. Many surfers ride it shorter than they would a typical mid-length.
