What is the Harley Ingleby MID 4?
The MID 4 (HI MID4 3+3) is a mid-length from Thunderbolt, shaped by Billy Tolhurst with two-time World Longboard Champion Harley Ingleby. It is scaled directly from the MID 6, refined, and built with 3+3 FCS fin boxes, so one board rides as a true quad, a true twin or an asym. It keeps the MID 6's wave-catching ability and forgiving feel.
Who it's for
Thunderbolt designed the 6'6", 6'10" and 7'4" sizes for MID 6 riders who want twin and asym options in a board that feels familiar.
What waves it suits
Thunderbolt says the tighter nose makes the MID 4 more comfortable in the pocket and in tighter sections without costing paddle power, and the four-channel bottom feels a little freer through fat, slow sections while keeping the same drive.
3+3 FCS fin setup
- Quad: black plugs, for drive and hold.
- Twin: white plugs, for a loose, skatey twin feel.
- Asym: twin on your toe-side rail, quad on your heel-side rail.
MID 4 vs MID 6
- Nose: the MID 4 is 1/4" narrower at one foot from the nose.
- Bottom: flat entry with rail relief, for a more performance-oriented rail without the stickiness of deep concaves.
- Channels: four on the MID 4, six on the MID 6.
- Fins: 3+3 FCS (quad, twin or asym) on the MID 4; 5 FCS boxes (thruster or quad) on the MID 6.
- Sizes: the MID 4 range goes down to 5'10", so smaller and higher-performance surfers get MID 6 DNA without the length.

MID 4
The Harley Ingleby MID4 3+3 is a mid-length built directly from the MID6 outline and fitted with a 3+3 fin system, so one board rides as a true quad, a true twin, or an asym. Shaped by Billy Tolhurst for two-time World Longboard Champion Harley Ingleby, it keeps the wave-catching ability and forgiving feel of its parent design while opening the fin setup far wider than a mid-length normally goes.
WHO
The MID4 3+3 was built for surfers who want mid-length paddle power without being locked into one fin setup.
- The surfer who already loves the MID6 and wants a twin or asym option in the same family
- The higher-performance shortboarder who wants mid-length glide in a shorter, more manageable package
- The smaller surfer who has always found mid-lengths too much board to turn
- The mid-length rider curious about twin fins who wants to try them without buying a dedicated twin
- The surfer building a small quiver who wants one board that feels different every session
It's for the rider who wants to change how a board surfs by swapping fins instead of buying another board.
WHEN
The MID4 3+3 has paddle power and glide for days when the waves are fat and slow, and the four-channel tail keeps it moving freely through soft sections where a mid-length is most at home. When the waves stand up and get steeper, the tighter nose outline and the performance rail let it fit into the pocket and hold a line without feeling sticky. Because the fin setup changes, the board changes with the conditions: twin for freedom and speed when the waves lack push, quad for drive and hold when they have more power. It suits the full mix of reef and beach-break conditions a Hawaii surfer sees in a week.
WHAT
The MID4 starts with the MID6 outline, scaled directly, with one deliberate change: a quarter inch taken out of the nose outline at one foot back. That small tightening makes the board more comfortable in the pocket and in tighter sections without giving up its early entry. The bottom is flat through the entry, with Billy Tolhurst's signature rail relief running underfoot. That lets the rail be sharper and more performance-oriented without the stickiness that deep concaves can bring. Where the parent design runs six channels, the MID4 runs four. That frees up the tail for the 3+3 fin system and adds a touch of freedom through slower sections, with no noticeable loss of drive.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What size MID4 3+3 should I order?
The right MID4 size depends on your weight, the boards you ride now, how you like to surf, and the waves you surf most. Contact us directly and we'll help you choose:
- Email: sales@hawaiiansouthshore.com
- Text: (808) 597-9055
When you reach out, include your current board dimensions and volume, which construction you're considering, the breaks you surf most (beach break, reef break or point break), how often you surf, and your location. Also tell us how you want to ride it: a performance mid-length you'll mostly ride as a quad, or a board you'll swap between twin, quad and asym as the waves change. Your location affects shipping options and helps us give you accurate delivery information.
How do you set up the MID4 3+3 as a quad, twin, or asym?
The MID4 3+3 has two sets of fin plugs. Fins in the black plugs make it a true quad, and fins in the white plugs make it a true twin. For a twinzer, add a pair of small canard fins up front with the twin. For asym, run the twin on the toe-side rail and the quad on the heel-side rail. As a starting point, the twin feels loosest and quickest on smaller, softer days, and the quad gives more drive and hold when the waves have more power. Asym sits between the two and suits surfers who want to set up the board around their forehand and backhand.
