BOSS UP

The Firewire Boss Up is Kelly Slater's first performance mid-length — a Slater Designs shape built by Dan Mann that carries shortboard DNA into a longer, higher-volume package. It's the board that paddles into anything, rides like a performance shape, and handles a wider range of conditions than anything else in its class.

WHO

The Boss Up was built for surfers who are done compromising — and want one board that can do it all.

  • The experienced shortboarder ready to add a high-performance mid-length to the quiver without giving up surfing ability
  • The surfer who travels frequently and wants a single board that works from small, soft days to solid overhead surf
  • The intermediate surfer who's outgrown longboards and fun shapes but wants something more forgiving than a performance shortboard
  • The surfer transitioning from longer boards who wants more performance without sacrificing paddle power and wave count
  • The regular shortboarder looking for a board that makes frustrating, mediocre days genuinely enjoyable

This board rewards surfers who want to actually surf it — not just cruise on it.

WHEN

The Boss Up's wave range is one of the widest in the Firewire lineup. Its medium entry and exit rocker with a double concave bottom gives it the paddle speed to lock into weak, slow waves early, while the longer rail line and round tail provide enough drive and hold to handle punchy, overhead surf. In Hawaii, it reads the full range of conditions the ocean offers — from small, mushy days when a shortboard would struggle to get going, to solid overhead sets where a mid-length usually falls apart. This is the board you reach for when you're not sure what the ocean is going to deliver.

WHAT

The Boss Up takes the S Boss outline and stretches it — same blunt nose, same FRK-inspired tail, but with bigger overall dimensions and a longer rail line that adds drive, paddle power, and range. The parallel rail outline keeps the board wide through the middle for maximum planing speed, while the pulled-in round tail keeps the back end responsive and pivot-friendly. A subtle single-to-double concave bottom feeds speed through flat sections and encourages flow from rail to rail. The result is a mid-length shape that doesn't feel sluggish or heavy — it surfs with the directness of a performance shortboard in a package that does a lot more work for you.

The volume recommendation of roughly 13 liters above your standard shortboard isn't arbitrary — it's what makes this board so effective. Extra volume here means early entry, strong paddle speed, and the ability to catch waves that a shortboard would miss entirely. But the Boss Up's design doesn't let that volume sit dead in the board — it's distributed through a shape that was engineered to put you in the right position to surf, not just float.

CONSTRUCTION OPTIONS

Ibolic: I-beam high-density EPS core with parabolic rail system — stiffer than Helium with unparalleled break strength, engineered for speed, control, and snap-back through turns.

Ibolic + Volcanic: Same Ibolic I-beam core with basalt fiber lamination — Firewire's most durable construction and a sustainable alternative to carbon, with higher elasticity for a more natural flex underfoot.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What wave conditions is the Boss Up best suited for?

The Firewire Boss Up is incredibly versatile, performing well in a wide range of conditions. It excels in everything from smaller surf to barrels and is particularly effective in punchy surf with an open face. The board is suitable for carving and linking turns in various wave types, from beach breaks to point breaks. It's even been tested in powerful waves in Tahiti and Hawaii, demonstrating its capability in more challenging conditions

How does the Boss Up compare to a standard shortboard in terms of volume?

Firewire recommends riding the Boss Up with approximately 13 liters more volume than your standard shortboard. This increased volume contributes to the board's excellent paddle power and versatility across different wave conditions.

What fin setup works best for the Boss Up?

Dan Mann, one of the board's designers, recommends a quad fin configuration for the Boss Up. He suggests using a larger front set of fins with adjustable rear quad fins to fine-tune the board's sensitivity and looseness. The rear fins should have a slightly more upright, 80/20 foil, which differs from the typical 60/40 ratio

Is the Boss Up suitable for beginners?

While the Boss Up is versatile enough for surfers of various skill levels, it's particularly well-suited for intermediate to advanced surfers looking to progress their skills. The board's forgiving nature and excellent paddle power make it accessible to those transitioning from longer boards to more performance-oriented shapes

How does the Boss Up perform in small waves?

The Boss Up excels in small wave conditions due to its mid-length design and volume distribution. The board's shape allows for easy wave catching and maintains speed in weaker surf, making it an excellent choice for days when the waves are less than ideal.

What makes the Boss Up different from other mid-length surfboards?

The Boss Up stands out due to its unique blend of design elements from the S-Boss shortboard and mid-length surfboard features. It incorporates a blunt nose, a "saucy little FRK tail," parallel rail outline, and a subtle single concave bottom contour. This combination allows for a balance of speed, maneuverability, and stability that sets it apart from other mid-lengths.

These FAQs cover the most common inquiries about the Firewire Boss Up surfboard based on reputable sources and the provided documents. The answers highlight the board's versatility, construction, performance characteristics, and suitability for various surfers and conditions.
