FRK+ DESCRIPTION

The Firewire FRK+ is a high-performance shortboard shaped by Dan Mann in collaboration with Kelly Slater — built to disappear beneath you and let your surfing do the talking. It's the everyday performance option in the FRK family, refined for a wider range of surfers and a wider range of conditions.

WHO

The FRK+ is for surfers who want a high-performance shortboard that doesn't punish them for riding it in real-world waves.

  • The intermediate-to-advanced surfer who wants a board that performs at their ceiling, not their average
  • The experienced shortboarder looking for a daily driver with genuine drive and quick rail-to-rail response
  • The surfer who regularly rides performance boards and wants the clean feel of a shape that stays out of your way
  • The surfer who wants to ride something connected to Kelly Slater's competitive history without needing to surf at his level to enjoy it

This board rewards surfers who commit — it's not forgiving, but when you're on, it's fast.

WHEN

The FRK+ comes alive from waist-high and up. Its moderate rocker and squash tail give it the ability to generate speed across flatter sections, but the board is at its best when the waves have some push — head-high and punchy is where it shines. In Hawaii, it handles the full range of everyday surf, from manageable south swells to solid overhead days when you want a performance shortboard and not a step-up. It's not a small-wave board, and it's not built for the biggest swells — it's built for the middle ground most surfers spend their sessions in.

WHAT

The FRK+ starts from Dan Mann's original FRK template — a clean, performance-oriented outline with medium rails — and updates it with a squash tail in place of the round tail. That change sounds simple, but it shifts how the board exits turns: the squash tail releases more freely, giving the back foot a snappier, more immediate response. The concaves and fin placement were also adjusted to work with the increased surface area of the squash, tightening up the drive without losing the release. The result is a board with exceptional rail-to-rail speed and an engine in the back third that generates and holds drive through turns.

In Ibolic construction, the FRK+ is stiff, light, and responsive. The I-beam high-density foam stringer running down the center and parabolic rail springers from nose to tail create a flex pattern with fast recoil — you feel it most in tight turns where the board snaps back to speed. Ibolic is Firewire's most structurally engineered construction, and on a performance shortboard like the FRK+, that stiffness translates directly into precision.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What's the difference between the FRK and the FRK+?

The original FRK has a round tail, narrower outline, and is designed specifically for high-performance waves with real power. It's a precision tool built around Kelly Slater's surfing. The FRK+ swaps the round tail for a squash tail, which adds more surface area and lets the board release more freely through turns. The FRK+ also has minor adjustments to the concaves and fin placement to match the squash geometry. The practical difference: the FRK+ can be ridden slightly shorter, generates speed more easily across flatter sections, and suits a wider range of skill levels — higher intermediate and up, versus the more demanding feel of the original FRK. If you're surfing everyday conditions and want maximum versatility, the FRK+ is the right call.

What's the difference between the FRK, FRK+, and FRK Swallow?

The FRK is the original high-performance shortboard designed for powerful, round waves. The FRK+ is an enhanced version for everyday waves, featuring a squash tail and fuller rails for more versatility. The FRK Swallow is optimized for waves 5 feet and under, with a swallow tail design for better performance in smaller conditions

What size FRK+ should I order?

Sizing the FRK+ depends on your weight, your usual board volume, how you surf, and the type of waves you typically ride. This is a narrower, performance-oriented shape, so most surfers will want to be honest about their volume needs rather than going too thin. We're happy to help you dial in the right size:

When you reach out, include your current board dimensions and volume, the construction you're considering, the type of breaks you surf most (beach break, reef break, point break), how often you surf, and your location — location affects shipping options and helps us give you accurate delivery information.

Is the FRK+ good in small waves?

The FRK+ works in smaller surf but it's not built for it. Firewire describes its sweet spot as waist-high and above, with the board performing best in average-to-solid everyday surf. In truly small, weak waves it can feel stiff and slow to generate speed — that's not a flaw in the design, it's just what the shape was built for. If you're primarily surfing gutless conditions, a different model in the Firewire lineup will serve you better. If you want a board that covers the everyday range and excels when the surf has some energy behind it, the FRK+ delivers.
