REVO MAX

The Firewire Revo Max is Daniel "Tomo" Thomson's Modern Planing Hull twin fin — a step-up board that paddles like a mid-length, turns like a shortboard, and handles everything from waist-high beachbreak to solid overhead surf. It's the most versatile design Tomo has built.

WHO

The Revo Max was built for surfers who want one board that covers a wide range of conditions without compromise.

  • The intermediate surfer ready to stop leaving waves on the table — this board catches more, goes faster, and turns better than anything they've ridden at this volume
  • The performance shortboarder who wants a step up that doesn't sacrifice looseness or drive
  • The surfer coming back from injury or time out of the water who needs paddle power and wave count without giving up performance
  • The experienced surfer who wants a do-everything quiver piece — something that goes from mellow reef mornings to solid overhead point surf without skipping a beat

This board rewards surfers who want more from their quiver, not less.

WHEN

The Revo Max was designed for the full range of everyday surf — from the soft waist-high days when most step-up boards feel heavy and stiff, to the solid overhead sessions where a standard shortboard starts to struggle. Its extended rail line and Vee Quad Concave bottom create forward drive and speed even when there isn't much wave to work with, and its wider plan shape and higher volume give it the paddle power to get into bigger surf early. It handles chop, wind, and variable conditions better than its category label suggests. The "step up" tag is accurate in the sense that it comes into its own in overhead surf — but it doesn't require overhead surf to perform.

WHAT

The Revo Max is built around Tomo's Vee Quad Concave — a bottom contour that combines a central vee with quad concave channels. The vee creates lift and forward thrust whether the board is flat on the water or rolled onto a rail, while the concaves channel water through the fins for control at speed and smooth rail-to-rail transitions. The result is a board that generates speed from its own geometry rather than demanding it from the wave. The outline is wider and fuller than Tomo's shorter MPH designs, with a longer rocker line that creates more projection and flow. That extra length and width is what makes it paddle well and cover ground quickly — the board planes early and carries momentum through flat sections where a shorter board would stall.

Built in Ibolic with Volcanic lamination, the Revo Max is Firewire's most durable and responsive construction combination. The I-beam EPS core stiffens the board underfoot while high-density parabolic rails allow the board to flex and recoil through turns. The Volcanic basalt fiber lamination adds the response characteristics of carbon with better durability and a significantly lower environmental impact than traditional carbon cloth. In the water, this combination feels lively and immediate — quick to respond to weight shifts and efficient at transferring energy through turns.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What size Revo Max should I order?

Sizing the Revo Max depends on your current board dimensions and volume, how you surf, the types of breaks you ride most, and where you're located. Tomo designed this board to be ridden with more volume than a typical shortboard — the extra float works with the board's geometry rather than against it. That said, the right size is individual and varies significantly based on body weight, fitness, and wave preference. Contact us directly and we'll help you dial it in:

When you reach out, include your current board dimensions and volume, your wave type (beach break, reef break, or point break), how often you surf, and your location. Location helps us give you accurate delivery information and confirm shipping options.

Is the Revo Max actually a step-up board, or can it handle everyday surf?

Both. The "step up" label refers to its size, volume, and ability to hold in overhead-plus surf — but the Revo Max doesn't need overhead surf to perform. Its Vee Quad Concave bottom creates lift and drive even in low-power waves, and its extended rail line carries speed through flat sections. Reviewers consistently note it works well from waist-high beach break all the way to solid overhead point surf. If you're used to riding shorter boards, the Revo Max will feel like it catches everything — and gives you more options when the surf is good.

How does the Revo Max compare to the shorter Tomo Revo?

The Revo is shorter, lower-volume, and designed for high-performance surfing in smaller, punchier waves. The Revo Max is larger in every dimension — longer rail line, more volume, wider outline — and trades some of the Revo's raw performance edge for a significantly wider range. The Revo Max excels in overhead surf where the Revo can feel limited, and its extra length creates more glide and projection. If you're primarily surfing everyday beach break in the waist-to-head-high range, the Revo may be enough. If you want a board that holds up in bigger surf and still works when it's small, the Revo Max is the right call.
