DOMINATOR PR0

The Firewire Dominator Pro is Dan Mann's performance evolution of the beloved Dominator series — a board designed to go toe-to-toe with a true performance shortboard while keeping the Dominator's DNA intact. It's more precise than the Dominator 2.0, but more forgiving than the FRK, landing in exactly the gap most progressing surfers have been looking for.

WHO

The Dominator Pro is for surfers who've outgrown the Dominator 2.0 or want something sharper to bring out on better days.

  • The intermediate-advanced surfer who feels held back by their hybrid and wants a board that responds to harder surfing
  • The experienced surfer looking for a refined everyday board that rewards commitment and precision
  • The Dominator 2.0 rider whose surfing has progressed and who wants more performance without going full FRK
  • The surfer who travels for waves and needs a board built for quality surf, not just consistency
  • The all-round shortboarder who wants a board that handles both clean point breaks and punchy beach breaks without compromise

This board gives more capable surfers a design that matches their ability level, without dropping the paddle power and wave range that made the Dominator famous.

WHEN

The Dominator Pro handles a wide range of conditions — from thigh-high to overhead and hollow — but it's built for when the surf has real energy behind it. When the swell fills in, the tide gets right, and the waves start throwing pockets, this board comes alive. It sits tight in the pocket, wants to be driven off the rail, and rewards surfers who can position precisely and commit to their turns. Hawaii's reef breaks and shore breaks with punch are exactly where it excels. On softer, smaller days it's still functional, but its strength is in quality surf where a performance board earns its keep.

WHAT

The Dominator Pro starts from the same DNA as the Dominator 2.0 — same hip in the tail, same round-ish squash tail shape — but Mann pulled in the nose and tail block, refined the volume distribution, and increased the rocker curve from center to tail. The result is a board with a tighter, more performance-oriented outline that sits in the pocket rather than gliding through sections. The bottom contour follows the Dominator template, with slightly more single concave under the front foot to create lift and speed, flowing into a double barrel concave through the fin cluster, then transitioning to a vee off the tail for smooth rail-to-rail movement and controlled release through turns.

In Helium construction, the Dominator Pro is genuinely light and lively. Firewire's stringerless EPS core with parabolic Paulownia and balsa wood rails produces a board that flexes through turns and rebounds quickly — qualities that translate into speed through flat sections and punch through the lip. The Helium layup makes a meaningful difference at this performance level, where a surfer pushing hard can feel the difference between a dead board and a live one.

DOMINATOR PRO FAQS

How does the Dominator Pro differ from the Dominator 2.0?

The Dominator Pro is a more performance-oriented evolution of the popular Dominator 2.0. While it maintains the DNA of the Dominator series, it features a more pulled-in outline, refined volume distribution, and a moderate increase in rocker curve from nose to tail. It's less forgiving than the 2.0 but offers enhanced responsiveness and performance capabilities for surfers who have progressed their skills or want a more refined board for quality waves.

What wave conditions is the Dominator Pro best suited for?

The Dominator Pro works well in a variety of conditions from thigh-high to overhead and hollow surf. However, it truly excels in chest-high and above conditions with some power. It's designed to sit tight in the pocket and performs best in punchy waves with some curve to them, from small punchy beach breaks to head-high and overhead pockety waves

What fin setup works best with the Dominator Pro?

The Dominator Pro comes with a 5-fin setup allowing for multiple configurations. Many team riders prefer the thruster setup for all-around performance, while designer Dan Mann himself prefers the quad configuration for maximum speed and drive. Firewire recommends pairing it with their Velox Fin Set for optimal performance in either configuration.

Who is the Dominator Pro designed for?

The Dominator Pro is designed for two types of surfers: 1) Those who have progressed their skill set and want a more performance-oriented version of the Dominator 2.0, and 2) Experienced surfers looking for a refined board for surf trips or good days at their home break. It's ideal for surfers who want to up their game but still desire a touch of forgiveness compared to a pure performance shortboard.

How does the bottom contour of the Dominator Pro contribute to its performance?

The bottom contour's concave configuration is similar to the Dominator 2.0's but with slightly more single concave under the front foot. This flows into a double barrel concave through the fins and transitions to a vee out the tip of the tail. This design enhances speed and control, particularly in quality conditions with some power.

How does the Helium technology benefit the Dominator Pro?

The Helium technology provides the perfect balance of performance and durability. This construction makes the board light and responsive while maintaining strength. The technology contributes to the board's lively feel, allowing for better flex and energy transfer through turns.
