Technology Behind the Magic
The Lost Formula 1 represents Matt Biolos' modern evolution of Julian Wilson's F1 model from the early 2010s—the board Julian used to dominate his years on tour. This updated version blends the proven F1 template with many of the modern elements of the Driver 3.0, resulting in the latest high-performance round pin from Lost.
Design Innovation:
Round pin shortboards have been a staple of every power surfer's quiver for more than 40 years. Ever since Simon Anderson unveiled his thruster design at pumping Bells Beach in 1981, this design has been the go-to for powerful carves and control in hollow or larger waves—exactly the type of surfing used in Hawaii.
The Formula 1 is set back a bit more than the Driver 3.0, and gets added drive and speed from its progressive outline, which is blended with a deep single to double concave bottom contour. This concave setup works with the round pin to add extra bite through all types of turns, from carves to bottom turns, providing control and flow for aggressive riders who are pushing their boards to the limit.
The thick centerline adds a bit of extra volume, while tapered rails provide control and maneuverability. Added nose rocker and reduced tail rocker refine the ride, while a thin tail block provides extra bite and responsiveness.
Development Story:
This board is the result of a Lost team rider session at Trestles in 2024. Working through a bunch of old Lost shapes, Yago Dora and Cole Houshmand found that Julian Wilson's old boards were still relevant and worked great. Matt Biolos started tweaking the design in pursuit of an updated, modern take on the F1.
Cole Houshmand ended up surfing a number of 2025 world tour events on the new version, ultimately winning in Brazil on it. Yago was excited by the board's potential, and Biolos built him a couple of prototypes in his personal dimensions. The boards went so well that Yago ended up swapping out his normal boards for the updated Formula 1 at Trestles, where he ended up winning on a design that was essentially unproven and brand new to him.
Yago then went on to win the world title later in 2025, cementing the dominance of this new shape.

In celebration of Yago's world championship, Lost is releasing the Formula 1 Round Pin in Yago's dimensions so that everyday surfers can see what all the fuss is about. The first release of the updated Formula 1 is a series of round tails in a variety of sizes, based on Yago's Lowers-winning model.

Lost Surfboards and many other leading shapers still use PU for its balanced performance, durability, and smooth flex pattern—especially in everyday conditions and bigger, choppier waves.
Even with the rise of lighter epoxy builds, PU remains a solid go-to for those who want predictable, powerful performance underfoot. Whether you're carving up solid reef breaks or chasing the feel of your first board, PU construction delivers.
Key Characteristics of PU Surfboards
- PU foam combined with fiberglass and polyester resin creates a forgiving flex pattern. This provides a smoother rail-to-rail transition that feels “buttery” and comfortable—especially appreciated in more critical or textured wave conditions.
- PU boards tend to be heavier than EPS/Epoxy models, which many surfers appreciate for added drive and momentum down the line. This weight also helps the board handle well in windy or choppy surf.
- Dings? No big deal. PU/poly boards are easy to repair at home or by any surf shop, with widely available materials and lower costs compared to epoxy builds.
- Most traditional shortboards and performance boards—including many from Lost, Channel Islands, and Pyzel—were originally designed around PU blanks. That legacy continues with refined shapes and reliable performance today.
