FIREWIRE DOMINATOR 2.0
The Firewire Dominator 2.0 is Dan Mann's refined take on the board that's been a shortboard quiver staple since 2008 — updated with a squash tail, reworked rails, and a more refined bottom contour to perform across a wider range of conditions. It's the board that paddles like it has too much volume and surfs like it doesn't.
WHO
The Dominator 2.0 was built for surfers who want one board that covers most of what they'll encounter — and performs at all of it.
- The intermediate surfer who wants a high-performance shape they can actually paddle and catch waves on
- The experienced surfer looking for a daily driver that works when conditions are inconsistent and also holds up when it gets good
- The surfer who's been riding a fish or a funboard and is ready to move into something more performance-oriented without giving up the paddle advantage
- The bigger or older surfer who refuses to sacrifice performance just to get more volume — the Dom 2.0 delivers both
- The surfer visiting Hawaii who wants a single board that handles the full range from morning slop to afternoon juice
Every surfer on this list will find the Dominator 2.0 does more than expected in both directions — smaller and bigger than anticipated.
WHEN
The Dominator 2.0 is at home in the chest-high to overhead range, but its low entry rocker and wide outline mean it paddles into waves earlier and carries speed through sections where most shortboards stall. On flat, weak days, the extra planing surface keeps it moving. When the surf steps up and starts to show real shape — walls, bowls, punchier sections — the squash tail and refined rails give it the release and control to meet the moment. It's genuinely one of the most forgiving boards to surf hard in Hawaii's variable conditions, where a single session can go from slow and mushy to fast and critical in the same hour.
WHAT
Dan Mann updated the Dominator's original round tail to a squash, which does two things: it keeps the smooth, predictable rail-to-rail transitions the original was known for, and adds more pivot and release off the tail when the surfer pushes harder through turns. The wide point stays back behind center, which keeps the nose clean and out of the way without sacrificing the forward planing surface that makes the board so easy to paddle. The bottom runs a single-to-double concave through the front foot that transitions into a subtle double-barrel and vee through the last five inches — creating speed under the front foot and looseness off the tail. The hip on the rails, sitting in line with the front fin position, lets the outline stay wide through the midsection without fighting the surfer on tighter turns.
In Helium 2, the Dominator 2.0 is lively and fast — the EPS core and parabolic wood rails flex and rebound in a way that pushes the board through turns rather than just pivoting. It surfs lighter than its volume suggests, making it especially responsive in weaker surf where generating momentum is the challenge. In Ibolic+Volcanic construction, the same outline gets a stiffer, more drivey character — better suited for surfers who want more control and feedback in punchier, more powerful waves, with the added durability of basalt fiber lamination over the I-beam core.
DIMENSIONS

CONSTRUCTION OPTIONS
Helium 2: Firewire's lightest EPS core construction — a stringerless 0.8 lb EPS blank with parabolic rails made from paulownia and balsa wood and a 3mm aerospace composite deck skin. Light, lively, and built to generate speed in everyday surf.
Ibolic + Volcanic: I-beam high-density EPS core with parabolic rails, laminated with basalt fiber instead of fiberglass — Firewire's most durable construction and a sustainable alternative to carbon fiber. Stiffer and more drivey than Helium, with elevated response in more powerful surf.
FIN CONFIGURATIONS
5-Fin. Rides as thruster or quad. Fins not included.
