GROOVE
The Firewire Groove is Rob Machado's highest-performance thruster — a board with his signature width and paddle ease up front, but more rocker, a tighter tail, and the kind of response you'd expect from a dedicated performance shape. It's the board Machado reaches for when conditions call for surfing harder, not easier.
WHO
The Groove is built for surfers who want to draw sharper, tighter lines without giving up the ease that makes Machado's designs so approachable.
- The intermediate-to-advanced surfer who's been riding hybrid or groveler shapes and wants to step up without switching to a pure performance shortboard
- The experienced Machado fan who already owns a Seaside or Machadocado and wants a board that works when conditions get better
- The surfer who wants more drive and control in the pocket — not just speed across the face
- The performance-focused surfer who values flow and smooth rail work over aggressive hack-and-slash surfing
This board rewards surfers who like to stay in the pocket, control speed, and link turns with intention.
WHEN
The Groove is designed for waves with push and power — waist-high to overhead surf where a board with real rocker can lock into the pocket and hold through a committed turn. Its elevated tail rocker keeps it in tight on steeper sections, and the nose rocker keeps it clean coming back down off the lip. In smaller, weaker surf it still works — the Helium construction helps it generate and hold speed — but this board comes alive when the wave has something to work with. It's a good fit for the kind of inconsistent lineups where conditions fluctuate between soft and punchy, and you need a board that can handle either.
WHAT
The Groove starts with a wider-than-typical outline through the nose and chest to preserve paddle power, then Machado narrowed the tail block and pulled in a squash tail to bring it back into performance territory. He added significantly more rocker than his usual shapes — elevated nose rocker to help the board come down tight off the lip, and tail rocker that keeps it up in the pocket on steep, critical sections. The result is a board that sits at the intersection of Machado's ease-of-use instincts and legitimate high-performance shortboard geometry. The 5-fin box lets you run it as a thruster for maximum drive and pocket control, or switch to a quad for more release and speed in smaller conditions.
In Helium construction, the Groove is noticeably light underfoot — the stringerless EPS core and wood composite rails give it quick response through turns and keep it lively in everyday surf. The flex pattern through the rail system helps the board store and release energy rather than going dead through a turn, which is part of what makes it feel more responsive than its volume would suggest. It's a performance board that doesn't punish you for riding it.

GROOVE FAQS
What type of waves is the Firewire Groove designed for?
The Firewire Groove is optimized for versatility, excelling in a variety of conditions. It works best in small to medium-sized waves, offering a balance of speed and maneuverability. Rob Machado specifically designed it to perform well in weak, everyday surf while still being capable in punchier waves. Its high-performance thruster setup and Helium core technology make it ideal for surfers who want a responsive board that generates speed even in less powerful conditions
How does the Helium construction benefit the Groove model?
The Helium construction features a lightweight EPS foam core with flex controlled at the rails using wood composite materials. This makes the board exceptionally light and durable while maintaining responsiveness underfoot. The Helium tech is particularly advantageous for generating speed in weaker waves, making it a great choice for surfers who prioritize performance without sacrificing durability.
What is the recommended volume and size for my weight and skill level?
Choosing the right size depends on your weight, skill level, and surfing style. The Groove comes in sizes ranging from 5'4" (25.8L) to 6'4" (43.4L). For example:
- If you're an intermediate surfer weighing around 165 lbs, a board with 28-31L (e.g., 5'7" or 5'8") would be suitable.
- Beginners might opt for higher volume boards to improve paddling ease and stability, while advanced surfers can go smaller for increased maneuverability.
What fin setup works best with the Groove?
The Groove is designed as a thruster (three-fin) setup, which provides a balance of speed, control, and maneuverability. Pairing it with Rob Machado’s signature fin set enhances its performance by complementing its design characteristics. The fins provide added drive and hold during turns, making them ideal for surfers looking to maximize the board’s potential.
Is the Firewire Groove durable?
Yes, thanks to its Helium construction and lamination technology. The board uses two layers of fiberglass on both sides with bio-resin, ensuring durability while keeping it lightweight. However, like all surfboards, regular maintenance is essential to prevent water damage from dings or cracks
Who is this board best suited for?
The Groove caters to intermediate to advanced surfers who want a versatile board for everyday conditions. It’s also suitable for beginners transitioning from larger boards due to its balanced volume distribution and forgiving design
What accessories pair well with the Groove?
For optimal performance:
- Machado Groove Fin Set
- Machado 3-Piece Arch Traction Pad
- Firewire All Day Leash (7mm)1
These accessories are designed to complement the board’s design and enhance its functionality.
