NEUTRINO DESCRIPTION

WHAT IS THE TOMO NEUTRINO SURFBOARD?

Tomo Neutrino - Modern Planing Hull Performance Hybrid

The Ultimate Skateboard for the Ocean

The Tomo Neutrino, designed by Daniel Thomson, represents the evolution of his revolutionary Modern Planing Hull (MPH) concept. Built with cutting-edge I-Bolic 2.0 Technology, this performance hybrid delivers remarkable speed and maneuverability in a compact package.

Design Heritage

Inspired by the Nano, one of Tomo's original Quad Inside Single Concave MPH designs from 2008/2009, the Neutrino carries forward Thomson's innovative approach to hydrodynamics while incorporating modern refinements for enhanced performance.

Breakthrough Features

  • Wide Chop Tail Design: One of the lowest drag tail designs available, allowing water to release perfectly symmetrically over the chop angle
  • Quad-Inside-Single-Concave: Creates exceptional lift and freedom on the water by reducing drag across the boundary layer
  • Ultra Parallel Rail Line: Tomo's signature outline allows for the shortest possible board while maintaining maximum functional rail line
  • Refined Nose Design: Provides ample paddling area with reduced swing weight for responsive performance in critical sections

Wave Performance

The Neutrino excels in small wave conditions where generating speed is crucial, yet holds its own in surf up to double overhead. Its sophisticated bottom contour delivers impressive drive in mushy conditions while maintaining control when the waves have more power.

Ideal For

  • Surfers seeking small-wave performance without sacrificing versatility
  • Riders who want the drive and foam of a larger board in a smaller package
  • Those looking to maximize fun in less-than-ideal conditions
  • Surfers transitioning from longboards to shorter craft who still want paddle power
  • Performance-oriented surfers seeking a daily driver for varied conditions

Fin Setup Recommendations

  • Thruster: Pair with Firewire Velox Fin Set for optimal all-around performance
  • Twin + 2: Try Slater Designs Endorfins Twin + 2 setup for increased speed and looseness in small, gutless conditions

I-Bolic 2.0 Technology

This advanced construction features:

  • I-beam core with strategically controlled flex at the rails using high-density foam
  • Fully engineered carbon strip inlay on the bottom deck for increased strength
  • Enhanced speed, control, and responsive flex patterns
  • Updated aesthetic appeal with improved durability

Size Selection Guide

The Neutrino's parallel outline allows you to ride it significantly shorter than your standard shortboard while maintaining excellent paddling power and stability. The wide point is positioned super narrow for easy rail-to-rail transitions, making this board feel incredibly nimble underfoot.

The Tomo Neutrino represents Daniel Thomson's continued evolution of the Modern Planing Hull concept—delivering the feeling of "a skateboard for the ocean" with incredible speed generation and responsive handling in a wide range of conditions.

TOMO NEUTRINO FAQS

What makes the Neutrino different from other grovelers?

Unlike typical grovelers that are wide in the center with pulled-in tails, the Neutrino maintains parallel rails throughout with a central wide point similar to a high-performance shortboard. As Tomo explains, "You're getting drive and projection, whereas a normal groveler might be really wide and have efficient surface area, but they just really lack drive. They're real squiggly, wiggly kind of little boards." This gives you the speed of a groveler but with significantly more drive - you'll "be able to project your turn" even in a two-foot wave.

What wave conditions is the Neutrino best for?

The Neutrino is specifically optimized for when "wave energy is lacking" - those everyday, less-than-perfect wave conditions that make up about 80% of surf sessions. According to Tomo, it's perfect for days when "you've missed the magic window, or the tide's a bit higher," situations with "super high tide and kind of mushy" waves. It allows you to "blast through the flat sections and still have the speed to wrap it right back to the pocket" when wave shapes are lacking.

Does the wide square tail slide out in turns?

No, despite what you might expect from the distinctive wide tail design. Hawaiian South Shore team rider Macy confirmed that during big roundhouse cutbacks, the board "just slingshots him back" and picks up speed through turns. Even on overhead days, the board doesn't slide out, thanks to the straight rail lines and unique bottom contour design.

What fin setup works best with the Neutrino?

Tomo designed the Neutrino as a thruster (tri-fin) to provide control with the board's natural speed. He specifically recommends the Firewire Blackstix fin template, saying it "goes as good as any other fin with that board." For extremely weak and mushy conditions, he suggests trying Kelly Slater's Endorphin 2+1 setup with the larger center fin: "When it's super weak and mushy, you throw a two plus one in there and you'll be just flying."

What is the "quad inside single concave" bottom design?

It's a four concave contour within a single concave that provides extra lift and speed when wave energy is weak. Tomo explains this "basically gives you little concave surfaces within the concave itself" which "helps give the board extra lift and speed when the energy in the wave is weak." The bottom contours start forward and deepen toward the tail, helping to maximize the little energy available in less powerful waves.

Who is the Neutrino designed for? What skill level?

According to Tomo, the Neutrino is suitable for "just about anyone." The width of the tail and rectangular shape make it well-suited for beginners to intermediates, who should size up a bit to match their fitness and wave-reading ability. For experienced performance surfers, Tomo recommends sizing down: "For a good performance surfer, you can size it to about the tip of your nose or the bridge of your nose." The board's stability makes it suitable for all skill levels when sized appropriately.

How does the Neutrino paddle and catch waves?

The Neutrino's design makes wave entry exceptionally easy. Tomo explains: "It's all about just maximizing your functional surface area into a smaller package. So you've got more foam from the tip of the tail to the tip of the nose, you've got the width in both areas." This creates a stable, balanced platform for paddling, with the width in the tail picking up the wave's energy and the width in the nose allowing you to paddle quite forward on the board.
