SWEET POTATO
The Firewire Sweet Potato is Dan Mann's high-performance groveler — a wide, flat, volume-forward design built to turn the weakest surf into something genuinely fun. It's the board that made groveling a legitimate quiver slot for surfers of every level.
WHO
The Sweet Potato was built for surfers who want to surf more often, not just better.
- The shortboarder who finds themselves sitting out too many small, weak days on boards that need real power to perform
- The intermediate surfer who wants to catch more waves without committing to a longboard
- The experienced surfer who wants a dedicated bad-day weapon — something that generates its own energy when the ocean isn't helping
- The surfer returning after time off who needs something forgiving on the paddle but still feels like a real surfboard underfoot
- The performance surfer adding a specialty groveler to round out a full quiver
This is the board you keep in the car because you know it will always find a ride.
WHEN
The Sweet Potato was designed for the days most shortboards get left on the rack. Its extremely flat rocker and wide outline let it lock into weak, crumbling waves early — the kind of surf that stalls out narrower, higher-volume boards. It performs best in waist-to-head-high conditions with soft or mushy energy, and it really excels when the surf is knee-to-waist-high and everyone else is debating whether it's worth paddling out. The deep double barrel concave generates drive from almost nothing, making it an essential board for inconsistent lineups where you need a board that will work with whatever the ocean gives.
WHAT
The Sweet Potato's outline is unmistakable — one of the widest, flattest plans in shortboard history. Dan Mann kept the entry and exit rocker extremely low, which is what gives the board its ability to plane early and carry speed across flat sections.
The trademark deep double barrel concave runs through the bottom and effectively splits the board in half when it tilts onto rail, isolating the fins and rocker on one side at a time. The result is a board that surfs significantly narrower than it looks, pivots quickly, and generates drive without needing steep or powerful waves. The current model adds a refined swallowtail that increases pocket maneuverability without giving up the projection and flat-wave speed the Sweet Potato is known for.
In Helium construction, the Sweet Potato is lively and responsive underfoot. The stringerless EPS core is light and quick to accelerate, while the Paulownia and Balsa wood parabolic rails flex through turns and return energy on the exit. The proprietary deck skin resists compression and keeps the board feeling responsive across a long lifespan. It's a noticeably active board — one that rewards pumping and rail surfing rather than passive, wait-and-see surfing.
