MASHUP

The Firewire Mashup is a collaboration between Rob Machado and Dan Mann ā€” a board built by merging the best elements of two of their most celebrated designs, the Seaside and the Spitfire. The result is a hybrid shortboard that generates effortless speed in weak surf while holding up to real turns in better waves.

WHEN

The Mashup is built for the everyday ā€” inconsistent, weaker surf where most shortboards go flat. Its generous volume distribution and hybrid outline generate speed early and carry it through soft sections that would stall a higher-performance shape. When conditions pick up to head-high and punchy, the step rails, swallow tail, and double concave bottom give it enough drive and control to hold its line and turn with intention. It's not a step-up, but it handles far more than its groveler label suggests. Hawaii's average day ā€” the kind of surf that comes around more than the good stuff ā€” is exactly where the Mashup earns its place.

WHAT

The Mashup borrows its nose from the Spitfire and its tail from the Seaside, then builds a hybrid rail line that lets those two halves work together. The wide point sits slightly forward of center, giving the board excellent paddle power up front. Step rails in the back third of the board pack in extra volume where you need it without making the outline feel bloated. The double concave runs throughout the bottom and becomes more pronounced from the center to the tail ā€” generating speed early and translating it into responsiveness off the back foot. The swallow tail keeps the back end loose and maneuverable, letting the board pivot and redirect without needing big wave power to do it.

In Helium, the Mashup is light and lively ā€” the parabolic wood rail system creates a loaded, spring-back flex that helps the board come alive in soft, slower surf. In Volcanic, that same core gets basalt fiber lamination, adding stiffness and impact resistance for surfers who prioritize durability without sacrificing too much of that Helium responsiveness.

The Mashup is absolutely my favorite boardā€”I actually own two of them, a 5'10" and a 6'0". Iā€™m about 6'0" and weigh between 215 to 220 lbs, and the flotation on both is great. I use the 6'0" (which is around 38 liters) when I want a little more volume for paddling, and I got the 5'10" (which is right around 36 liters) just for a little bit more fun. They surf really good and I love them. I surf out at Sandy's a lot, and I've ridden the board out at Big Rights. I even took it to Tahiti. Typically, I ride them as a thruster setup with AM2 fins, and Iā€™m actually buying a set of Kelly Slater's Endorfins today to try out. It's just a really fun board.

I rented the Mashup, and it was very, very solid. I usually ride a twin fish, so this was my first take at a more high-performance board. Even though the Mashup is still pretty thick, it is fast. I rode it with a twin plus one setup, but I think it would be pretty mean as a thruster or even a quad, though I haven't tried that yet. I normally ride 33.6 liters on my twin fish, and this one is 32.8 liters. If I got a Dan Mann Mashup, I think I'd probably stick with this volume but ride a different wave. I usually ride mushier waves, and while this board would work, the fish works a little better for that. However, if there was a wave with more face, I think this would be the one. It is very solid for turning. Thank you, guys, I appreciate it.

Iā€™ve been slowly transitioning from performance longboards to shortboarding, most recently stepping down from a 9ā€™3ā€ HI4 to a 5ā€™11ā€ Revo. While the Revo was fast and accommodating for timing errors, I felt the need to go a tad bit smaller with a bit more maneuverability, this is where the Mashup made sense. The board allows for a looseness a step above the Revo, perhaps at the expense of some straight line speed. The board paddles exceptionally well, even as it is a couple liters less than my Revo, due to where the meat of the board is located. At 5ā€™8ā€ 175#, Iā€™m using medium futures legacy quads, and it performs delightfully. Definitely recommend this versatile board!

This board is super fun when the waves are on the small side and easily catches waves. It is very responsive and drives very well. I prefer the quad set up and the board does very well in 1-2ā€™ over head conditions. I am happy with my decision to make this my longboard substitute.
