WHO

The Party Platter works for a wide range of surfers, not just one type.

  • The surfer who wants to stay active on the water even when conditions are poor
  • The intermediate progressing their surfing but held back by lack of wave power
  • The experienced shortboarder who wants a dedicated small wave weapon for their quiver
  • The surfer of smaller build who benefits from extra volume without going to a longboard
  • Anyone tired of sitting out flat days and looking for something that actually gets them moving

The common thread: surfers who want to make the most of whatever the ocean gives them, not wait around for ideal conditions.

WHEN

The Party Platter is built for flat, soft, low-energy surf — the kind of conditions where most shortboards struggle to generate momentum. When waves are ankle to waist-high and lacking power, this board compensates with volume, width, and a flat rocker profile that keeps you planning across slow sections. It's a day-saver for Hawaii's smaller, mushier days when the lineup is manageable and wave count matters more than wave quality.

WHAT

The Party Platter's shape is built entirely around the problem of small, weak waves. The low rocker keeps the board planing at low speeds, while the parallel outline and extra width maintain momentum through flat sections where a narrower board would stall. The flat deck and full rails add stability and paddle ease, making it approachable for surfers who don't ride a board this shape regularly. The concave-to-vee bottom provides lift off the bottom and rail-to-rail engagement when you do find a section worth turning on.

Blacksheep is Lost's carbon/fiberglass EPS construction — lighter than traditional PU, stiffer through the midsection, and more resistant to pressure dents. On a small wave board that gets used frequently in soft, punchy conditions, the durability and pop of Blacksheep is a genuine advantage over a standard poly build.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What size Party Platter should I ride?

Sizing a small wave board like the Party Platter is more nuanced than a standard shortboard because volume and width play a larger role.

We recommend reaching out to us directly before ordering so we can help you dial in the right size based on your current setup and how you surf. Email us at sales@hawaiiansouthshore.com or text (808) 597-9055.

Include: your current board's dimensions and volume, the construction you're interested in, the type of waves you surf most (beach break, reef break, or point break), how often you surf, and your location — location affects shipping options and helps us give you accurate delivery information.

Can the Party Platter handle waves above waist-high?

It can handle waist-to-chest surf without issue, but it's designed to shine below that. As waves get more powerful and hollow, the Party Platter's low rocker and wide outline can feel sluggish and hard to redirect compared to a purpose-built all-rounder or shortboard. Think of it as a specialist, not a do-it-all board. It does one thing exceptionally well: keeping you surfing on days when the waves don't give you much to work with.

How does the Party Platter compare to the Puddle Jumper Pro?

Both are small wave boards from Lost, but they're designed with different surfers in mind. The Puddle Jumper Pro is a high-performance groveler built for surfers who want to do serious surfing in weak waves — it's narrower, more reactive, and rewards precise technique. The Party Platter is wider, flatter, and more forgiving — it prioritizes volume, stability, and ease of use. If you're a strong surfer who wants to stay sharp in poor surf, the Puddle Jumper Pro is the better fit. If you want something anyone can ride and enjoy regardless of skill level, the Party Platter is the move.

How does the Party Platter compare to traditional fish boards for small waves?

The Lost Party Platter outperforms traditional fish designs in sub-2ft conditions due to its 20% reduced nose rocker and progressive rail engagement.

While fish boards typically excel in waist-high+ waves with continuous rocker curves, the Party Platter's ultra-wide outline (up to 22") and parallel rails maintain planing speed better in true small-wave conditions2.

Key differences:

  • Rocker Profile: -40% nose rocker vs fish's continuous curve
  • Tail Design: Squash tail variant vs swallowtail2
  • Wave Range: Effective down to ankle-slappers vs fish's waist-high minimum

Professional testers report 30% better speed retention in sub-knee-high surf compared to traditional fish designs

Can the Party Platter handle beach break closeouts?

Yes, when sized appropriately. Users report success in Virginia Beach conditions using:

  • 5'4"-5'6" sizes for faster transitions
  • Quad fin setup
  • 60% forward weight distribution during drops

The board's low rocker (≤2.75" nose rocker in 5'8" models) prevents pearling in steep takeoffs, while the concave/vee bottom provides unexpected hold in critical sections.

For powerful closeouts, the Double Dart version's enhanced rail memory improves rebound off collapsing lips

What fin setup works best for average beach break?

We recommend use Split Keels for FCS or Controllers for Futures

What are the benefits of the Party Platter's ultra-short and extra-wide design?
